Yesterday's post

Good morning

I was very happy with both Noogi's cycles yesterday :D:cool::D:cool:
Started on bit of a bounce today but we will see how the day progresses.

One thing I have been wondering about is whether I am just finally getting to the right dose for Noogi, or does starting a fresh insulin pen (as of yesterday morning) have anything to do with these better numbers? With all the pinks and reds in the last few weeks I began to wonder if it had anything to do with the insulin itself, but all my reading said as long as the pen is kept in the fridge and was still clear, it should be fine to the very last drop. So I used the pen til its end. It is however curious that things appear to have improved now that we are on new insulin. Has anyone ever had insulin become less effective towards the end of the pen's life? Or is it just a coincidence? I know it is not a question I can answer with any certainty, but would love to know if anyone else has had issues with insulin efficacy diminishing. Maybe especially during periods of very hot weather?

Hope everyone is having a good Sunday with their kitties :cat:

While some people have reported that their insulin had lost efficacy towards the end of the pen, I've never had this experience. Every time I felt that Bandit had bad numbers and used a new pen, it's invariably been that the dose had "gone stale" and she needed an increase or two to get back into greens. At such times, I've been able to go back and use the pen that I had set aside thinking that it was the insulin that was bad! I've been able to use every pen to the last drop.

With Noogi it's possible that he's just getting closer to a good dose with each increase. If something else is causing the high BGs like his skin issues, taking care of that might also be yielding better BGs. With so many things in the mix, it would be hard to say what is working. :-)

Interesting, thank you. And yes it is impossible to untangle. I'm just so grateful we are getting somewhere AT LAST and hope it sticks :)

BTW his skin irritation is not really better, altho somewhat improved. He still looks a little rough (red patches) but it doesn't seem to be bothering him, so that's a a good thing at least. Vet never got back to me last week. I'll follow up in a few days if I don't see continued improvement.

Nice to see his numbers already coming down after that bounce!

Your question on insulin is interesting because I've somehow wondered the opposite - I've seen spikes when I switch to a new vial. I wonder if it's all just coincidence, but can't help trying to find meaning when the numbers start making unexpected changes! Glad Noogi is finding his groove on this latest increase :bighug:

Oh that is a very different perspective Briana! And I agree completely that we are trying to find patterns when things appear so random.
Thanks for the wishes re: Noogi. I keep telling him to keep up the good work :bighug:

So glad to see the numbers coming down for Noogi!
I'm curious: how long had the pen been open?
I just changed vials for Jude (the old vial was a little over three months old), and Jude's numbers went down right away. I keep his insulin in the fridge as well. But, I have/had too many variables going on to say it was the fresh Lantus (Jude just finished a round of antibiotics). So many others here say they have used a vial or pen (more often pen, since there is a small amount of insulin in them) for months.
Again, I'm glad Noogi is responding to this dose and getting closer to those regulated numbers.

Agreed with Briana and Brianna, great day yesterday :D:cool: curious to see with more time if you can narrow down if it’s the pen helping.
Thanks Tim. I really wish I could know for sure. But however we have got here, am just enjoying the feeling of making some progress - at last!
(and crossing all the fingers and knocking on all the wood that it lasts, for a while at least)

Curious that Jude's numbers went down as well, even with the other factors in play. I'm definitely going to pay attention if Noogi's numbers start going up when we get to the last third of this new pen. The older one I started beginning of January, so it wasn't even a full three months of use. Expiry date was 2026. And although I have it kept in the fridge I did forget it out on the counter for an hour or so at least once. And we did have a couple power outages of a few hours at a time in late Feb/early March (although I have been careful to open the fridge as seldom as possible during those times). From what I have read online Lantus should withstand all of this, but maybe not in this particular case. It's a mystery!
And thanks for the wishes for Noogi. Hope he just keeps it up :bighug:
