3/30 Niko AMPS 193, +1 83, +1.5 85, +2 74, +3 81, +4 66, +5 63, +6 86 - big drop question

Did you feed at +1 or +2? Let's see where the next test is then decide what carb % to feed.
Can you remind me what you have as far as carb% goes?

Could you change your subject line to say something like "big drop question" or something like that. I don't see a "hypo protocol" question.

Time to flatten out Niko!

We have some MC Weruva pouches (12%) and some HC fancy feast (15% I think). Got some Karo syrup, some churu tubes with tapioca that bring him up a little bit.

He fed right after insulin, now fed again (a bit more of an appetite). Ate his regular LC stuff, I gave a tablespoon of the MC Weruva pouch just before his second test which is 85 now, 30 minutes after the last one.

Yep!!! Those big drops will do that. When you get back, can you describe your feeding schedule?

does the big drop mean his dose is too much? Or is he just a special guy like that? Lol

no worries I can answer here:

niko is mostly a grazer. Around his AMPS and PMPS, we give him half a can of pate in water (with nutri lys and other supplements), half a cup or so of freeze dried Stella and chewy dinner morsels, and we fill up his automatic wet food feeder (which dispenses food every 2.5-3 hours) with another half can of the soupy pate. As he has been more in the low numbers he doesn’t eat as much, but I’d say he gets about the equivalent of 200-250 calories a day.

he gets a tiki stix and freeze dried treats during his testing and insulin shots as well.

He's not unusual, big drops happen. Even when starting in yellows he seems to like to drop 100ish points by +2. Might want to think about how/when you feed him. A small meal around +1.5 (or +1) might slow him down a bit. We call it manipulating the curve:

he’s at around 66 at +4…. I’ll feed him some MC?

That makes sense, maybe I’ll feed him less at AMPS and leave out more at the +1.5/2. It is hard because he’s a grazer lol so he doesn’t eat a lot in one sitting

If you can monitor every hour, I would stick with LC. 66 is a safe number.
Okay! He’s at 86 at +6, think we are on the come up so we are gonna ease up on the testing.

I guess this is good to know for the future when shooting a blue PS… looks like he is a rapid dropper but tends to even out after +2 (although I’m gonna be a bit more intentional with his feeding).
