Just call around and see who has the cheapest price , it's really not that expensive
With the pens just keep them in the fridge middle shelf , they all have the expiration date on them .

Also
The 5 pens will last about a year, we use the pens just like a vial, you would just insert the syringe it the gray rubber stopper on the pen and draw out your insulin

finally got the pharmacy to honor the 5 pens for $35 coupon. I had my vet write the prescription as 8 to 25 units twice a day and that seemed to do the trick.

Using syringes with a pen, cartridge, or vial:
  • U-100 3/10cc syringes with half unit markings are the best to use for drawing Lantus, Levemir, or the Biosimilars from vials, cartridges, and pens.
  • BD Ultra-Fine, CarePoint Vet, Monoject, GNP, UltiCare Vet Rx, Sure Comfort, and ReliOn are just some of the brands available with half unit markings.
  • Syringes come in 5/64 inch (6mm), ½ inch (8mm) or 5/16 inch (12.7mm) needle lengths. Needle gauges are 29, 30 or 31 (31 being the thinnest)
  • Full and half-unit syringe scales: see pic below
  • We use these syringes with half unit markings because we adjust the dose by 0.25 units at a time

Whether you get the $35 price or not depends on the pharmacist / pharmacy. I was able to get my first box of Lantus for $35 but the most recent box purchased from the same pharmacy was at full price because the valid coupon I had wouldn't work for some reason.

Any store pharmacy sells Lantus. You just need a prescription from the vet. Shop around for prices. GoodRx.com is one place to compare prices at your local pharmacies. If asked, just tell the pharmacist that the prescription is for a family member. You do not need the pen needles despite what the pharmacist may say. FDMB member use insulin syringes to draw out the insulin from a pen.

For the lantus coupon in the 2nd picture, it's asking for patient info. Should I be putting in my pets name and a made up date of birth since it requires being 18 or do I just use my personal info acting like the prescription is for me and not a pet?

Oh, also on goodrx it says the name brand is actually cheaper right now than the generic by about 10 bucks, 45 with generic, 35 with name brand, is it ok to change the drop down menu to namebrand?

I think you could do either. The coupon won’t have a name on it.
But your prescription will need your kitty’s name. (Yes over 18 for the coupon to generate).
Probably for marketing??

This would be a really wild coincidence but I think we may be local to each other! Do you happen to be in the SF Bay Area? (Please don't feel obligated to answer if you're not comfortable!) I was also just at the vet today and our techs were talking about how all the other kitties they'd seen today were also diabetic and specifically mentioned seeing a boy named Mochi earlier (something along the lines of "Oh, Mochi does that too!"). Anyway, that would just be a funny coincidence and I was curious!

I'm north bay up in sonoma county, Mochi is my female cat's name. Would be a wild coincidence lol. Although I do feel like I remember one of the tech's calling her a boy. Looking at your signature our cats sound like they have similar natures too. She's a little shy with strangers, but the sweetest cat I've ever had. Just sits there with no resistance with whatever the vet does and is glued to me at all times including laying up on my pillow with me while sleeping.

Aahh! I was right! I'm also in Sonoma County. Is your vet Alderbrook? That really is wild! I wouldn't have even known if they hadn't mentioned her name (and they definitely did say "he"! lol Sorry!) Mochi is such a cute name and I even remember being surprised at the time because I'd've pictured it being a girl's name. Not that food really has genders, but you know. lol

Omg yup that was the place. What a small world :) She does the exact same at the vet, makes it easy for them to do tests etc but she just glues herself down to the table lol. I havn't worked there for a bit, but if you ever ordered delivery from Round table pizza, I may have even delivered to you lol

I doubt a vet takes back Sharps. The vet office pays to have their own Sharps and other waste disposed of by a company and additional amounts over what's in the contract means extra money they have to pay.

Check your local Health department for any Sharps waste disposal days or information on where to dispose of Sharps properly. My town has several Sharps disposal days throughout the year held at town hall. Sometimes they have new Sharps containers for people to take.

So sorry that I didn't see this til now! I had a really busy couple of days.

I've been getting the ReliOn 6mm 31 gauge syringes from Walmart (and Walmart Neighborhood Market) pharmacy! You do need to show them proof of the insulin prescription though (ideally with your name on it as the kitty's "owner.") I just take a pic of Xander's insulin bottle with the prescription label on it, show them my ID and they're literally like $12.50 for a box of 100. They are often off a little though so be sure to check the rubber stopper's location when you fill them! But they're so cheap and like the only ones I can get with half-unit markings.

Nw, I'm sure we all have our hands full lol. What do you mean by check the rubber stopper's location. If they are off then wouldn't the stopper location be inaccurate? Should I get a caliper for them? Is it the markings that are off or?

No, fortunately the markers themselves aren't off! What I mean is that the rubber stopper on the inside that's supposed to be flush with the top 0 marking when the plunger is pushed all the way in often starts above it. Like, instead of being flush with the "0" line, it will be a sliver above that, meaning that you actually need to draw that much less insulin. So for example: Say you need 2 units. If instead of being flush with the 0, it's a few mm above the line, when you draw down to 2 units you would go that same amount above the 2 line. It's hard to explain in written form, but if you'd like I can try to remember to take pics when I draw tonight so you can see what I mean.

I'm actually very highly considering getting calipers for this reason, just for the precision. I just haven't done it yet. If it worries you I'd absolutely go for those! It's really annoying that the needles are always off that way, but they're still the best option (for me at least).

I didn't either until I saw it firsthand! I'll try to remember to take a pic. Watch tonight be my first needle in a few weeks that's accurate. :rolleyes: The other day I had one so bad that I actually laughed out loud and threw it away without using it.

Okay, I got some pictures! Hopefully they'll be easy to see and make sense. It's surprisingly hard to get a picture of.

So you can see that the rubber stopper's top edge isn't flush with the line that's supposed to be zero. Which means if you were to draw to the 0 line, you'd already have insulin in the needle. Obviously this could result in giving a higher dose than you intend. Even that small amount is like 0.33 units, and we normally do increases and decreases by 0.25, so it's significant.

(Please excuse the fact that this needle is used already lol) So now you can see approximately where I would draw to to get 3 units. I tried to make the stopper the same amount above the 3 line as it was above the 0. This hopefully accommodates for it having been off. It's not perfect and, like I said, I am highly considering getting some calipers. But it's better than overdosing.

I hope this makes sense! If not, please let me know. :)

Ty! Makes perfect sense, would've never thought of that being a thing. Also a side note, before I post on the giveaway section since you're local. I have about 20 cans of various ff classic pate flavors (exp date year 2027 since I saw your other post talking about that). I'm not giving up entirely but I just don't see Mochi fully adopting to wet food. I've tried so many things and no matter what she will lick most of the moisture out and leave most of the food behind. I think for now I'm going to give most of her calories in the Dr elsey kibble since I know she will eat that and then the rest in soup form by using a nutrabullet to blend mostly water with like a spoonful of wet food, and just a small amount of pumpkin and bone broth. I know the moisture content is a big part of why wet food is better, Idk if there are other reasons which I'll try to find out, but I figure i can control the calories better that way (since I can't really tell what % of the actual wet food she ate since it's mostly left behind) and measure out at least half of her daily water needs and just give her some of that mixture before her dry meals/snacks in addition to the water she drinks normally. If you could use the cans let me know. Oh, when you find a needle that's off like that, does it vary needle to needle or is it at least consistent with each box/batch? (and just to make sure I have this right, normally you want the top of the stopper to be just touching the bottom of the unit line)?

I honestly don't have much experience to advise about the dry food (aside from knowing that it's generally not recommended), but the carb content is definitely a factor. I don't know anything about that brand though so maybe it would be fine. I think at the very least it's good that you're taking measures to include a lot of moisture because you're right that that is a large part of it too!

With the needles, I've found that they not only vary by a ton within the same box, but within the same bag (it's a box of 100, and they're grouped in bags of 10 needles). Last night that one was as off as in the pictures and this morning's needle was perfectly normal. :rolleyes:

I could be wrong, because now I can't seem to find a picture of this exact thing, but from what I understood, the plunger should be flush with the top of the line, not the bottom. Here's a sticky about drawing and fine dosing that does have some pictures in it of micro-dosing. It might help!

The dry food I have is about 4% carb for the duck/chicken and 2% for the salmon. I was checking the sticky last night and it wasn't super clear in the pictures to me but i emailed my vet and asked. As far as the wet food, if you maybe give me like a few times/places (any public place would work) that would work to meet I could let you know what works for me. Or I can leave it outside if you want to pick it up at some point or vice versa. Or I have a follow up appointment at the vet on friday if youre going there anytime soon I can ask if I can leave it for you there.
