well, I spoke too soon yesterday about things being calm.
This morning, Ivy has had pretty soft somewhat mushy stools and they seem to be getting looser. This is how her pancreatitis started in February. So of course I’m extremely nervous.

She’s been getting a maintenance dose of half capsule of S. Boulardi since February twice a day.

After she had loose stools for the second time this morning at 8 AM I gave her one full capsule of S. Boulsrdi and started her on Animal Essentials Colon Rescue, which tends to help her.

She seems slightly less interested in food, but still eating her regular food I’ve had to encourage and hold the bowl.

Praying I can head this off and not head into a bout again of pancreatitis :(

Does anyone have any idea if you can head off a bout of pancreatitis and if so, what would you do?

hope everyone has a very boring day!

:bighug::bighug:

Leroy almost had a p-itis flare up not long ago. It was a Friday so I was able to get a hold of the vet. Our plan was Cerenia, Mirataz if needed, bupe if needed, ER as a last resort. I only needed to give Cerenia twice. No change to food, no toppers needed. Leroy fortunately felt better by the end of the weekend. Leroy is a crazy weirdo cat  so what worked for him may not work for other cats.

Leroy is sending vines to Ivy to feel better :cat:

Had he stopped eating or did he puke?
Is that why you gave Cerenia. Did you give a large dose or small?
My vet won't give me bupe in advance of a bout. I do have gabapentin on hand. I have Mirtazapine on hand.

SO glad you avoided the episode!!
@squeem3

Oh Staci I'm sorry to read this. Hopefully this isn't another episode of pancreatitis.
Boys and I are sending lots and lots of PAWsitive and healing vines xoxoxo

Sorry to hear this Staci. She must have been feeling poorly the other day when she was behaving strangely. Poor Ivy.
Hope that you are able to get ahead of whatever is going on :bighug:

He was acting off: sitting upright but with his hind legs pushed out to the sides and being a little quiet. Leroy is not a quiet cat (not even a normal cat:blackeye:) so when he's quiet, something is wrong. His appetite was ok, just took him longer to finish. So I gave half a Cerenia twice. That did the trick.

The bupe was on hold with the vet hospital pharmacy. If I needed it, I just had to call and have them fill it. I think bupe expires pretty quic, within a few weeks anyways, of the prescription being filled so you can't really have a stash on hand for potential future use.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this, Staci. Your anxiety is of understandable and justified! I sure hope it's just that she's just feeling a bit "off" and not that this is a new flareup.

I hope someone with experience is able to give advice about trying to put a stopper on it fully redeveloping if that's what it is, that there's a way to slow the train down and maybe not make it all the way to the next stop.

Thinking of you and Ivy and sending all the love and vines. ❤️:bighug:❤️:bighug:❤️

Perhaps, so hard to know, Helen! in so worried. But hoping we nipped it quickly this time. At least I have some meds in that house this time.

Got it. It’s so good you can read his behavior.
I’m contemplating giving Cerenia. But just not sure if needed.

What dose did you give Leroy?
I’m so glad it worked and you avoided a problem!! Awesome work there!!!
Ivy is just being quiet in her bed (but not unusual behavior) and not hiding or loafing like last time. Paws crossed :(

Aw I'm sorry Staci :( I really hope this isn't another case of pancreatitis and interested to see what others have to say about preventative treatment. Hope sweet Ivy is okay. I know you're giving her the best of care!! Sending hugs :bighug:

Hi Staci, I wish I could tell you something , I hope you can nip it in the bud fast

Thanks, Diane, I appreciate it.
I did end up giving her a 4 mg dose of Cerenia today and she just ate her dinner well and I gave a full dose of Lantus tonight.
I’m hoping we nipped the loose stools in the bud, but I guess I won’t know until she goes again. I guess it’s good She hasn’t gone again since this morning.
So either I stopped her up or she’s OK.
Who knows which it is yet but I’ll let you know if there’s any further momentum from my girl.

I'm saying a prayer that when she goes tonight the poop will be normal. I'm happy to hear she ate all her dinner . Keep us updated :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I hate that Miss Ivy isn't feeling so well. I really hope this isn't another pancreatitis flare up.

Have you ever been on Tanyas CKD Website? Not all of the information on there pertains to just cats with CKD. They have some really good information and suggestions on feline pancreatitis.https://felinecrf.org/pancreatitis.htm. It also has links and source citations to other creditable sources on feline pancreatitis.

I’m contemplating giving Cerenia. But just not sure if needed.

What dose did you give Leroy?

Leroy gets half of a 16 mg Cerenia, so 8 mg. He weighs 9 lbs. Not sure if dosing is based on weight or symptoms.

More vines to Ivy :bighug:

Thank you for that. :cat:
I gave Ivy 4 mg today. When she had pancreatitis she was taking 12 mg.
She’s about 14-15 lbs. I believe it is based on weight. :bighug:

Even if I don't reply back on one of your threads I'm always thinking of Ivy. I'll take a peek at everyone's but just haven't been feeling that great with this freaking hip. Have an appointment on May 7th with the surgeon to discuss things . Today was a bad day for me it has been 1 years and 10 months since Ashley passed. Still feels like yesterday. Same for my Dad 1 year and 9 months was on the 11th.
@Staci & Ivy

Is she eating now?
Have you tried ondansetron for nausea?
I found stress often triggered Sheba’s pancreatic flares.
Have you tried Visbiome for the bowels?
Hi Bron, yes she ate her dinner and snacks at +1,2 and +3. I gave full dose of insulin.

She did have a strange day on Sunday, I wasn’t sure if she hurt herself jumping off the bed, but she seemed fine yesterday.
Otherwise, no other stress known.

Last time I gave ondansetron it only seemed to make her very sleepy and didn’t “seem” to help her. So I gave Cerenia for over a week and she recovered.
I gave 4 mg Cerenia today and Colon Rescue with additional S. Boulardii (more than she normally gets 1/2 capsule 2x daily, since her pancreatitis in late February).

She hasn’t had any further poops since this morning, but she did pee each hour tonight after eating her 3 snacks (that was odd to me).

She also takes Adored Beast Healthy Gut prebiotic and probiotic 2x daily.

Thank you for checking in and your suggestions :bighug::bighug:

Hi Diane, Ivy and I appreciate your deep caring and concern, always ❤️
I hope everything goes well on May 7. You’re on your way to feeling better soon. I’ll be rooting for you!
I’m sorry today was a tough day. I know how much you must miss both Ashley and your Dad :(

I’m sending you big hugs of strength and support :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm so sorry that this was a sad day for you, Diane! You mean a lot to all of us here, and I hope tomorrow is better. I also hope things go well with your surgeon's appointment.:bighug::bighug:

I am sorry to hear this, Staci. I know how stressful it is. It's good that Ivy ate her food and there hasn't been any more poo.
When I think a bout of pancreatitis is about to occur, Butch get Cerenia 4 mg and Mirataz.
Sending lots of prayers and hugs. Wishing you both a calm restful night and safe surf.

Oral Cerenia dosing is about 1 mg/lb of cat. 4 mg won't do a lot.

If her heart is OK, you could also give fluids. Reminder: A Primer On Pancreatitis but I hope it doesn't go there.
Hi Wendy, thank you. One question…. Below is dosing info from the primer you sent here, but dosing is 1/2 of what you noted, which is correct?

Maropitant citrate (Cerenia® ) is also effective for controlling vomiting and nausea. It has become a popular and effective antiemetic in cats and can be administered in a subcutaneous injection if kitty is vomiting. Since it is a veterinary drug, the pill form can be obtained from your vet or with a prescription at online sources (such as Thriving Pets). Cerenia is generally administered at 0.5mg/lb (1mg/kg)
