Squallie vomited a couple of times early this morning, looked like it was all just bile and fluid. The 160 was kind of a surprise, even taking dawn phenomenon into account.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should try another insulin for him, maybe Lev or ProZinc? He seems to have an awful lot of really big drops, and sometimes, rises, with the Lantus. I don't really understand it, because he didn't used to have these issues with it. Anybody have any helpful input? I welcome and appreciate others' thoughts on this!

I hope Squallie is doing better tonight. I don't know anything about ProZinc. I've heard others say Lev usually gives a flatter cycle and the nadir is later in the cycle. I think the weekend isn't always the best time to ask questions because people are busy. Maybe ask tomorrow and put Lev? in the subject line. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I say it's worth a shot to give Lev a try. One of the main reasons I switched to Lev is because I was getting very sudden and unpredictable drops on Lantus and for Asia the onset was almost immediate so I couldn't really brace myself for low preshots. I can still get big drops with Lev, but I see it coming and the cycles in general are more predictable and flat. I feel like she got better duration on Lantus, but it's a fair trade off for what I didn't like with Lantus, I was very stressed out with Lantus. I don't think it is shorter duration for everyone, ECID. Squallie looks so beautiful on Lantus, I'm sure he will be just as awesome with Lev if you decide to switch. It also has later onset and action, so it can mess with your schedule a bit, you can always change the shot times to be more accommodating once you see how he does on it though.

I personally wouldn't consider ProZinc. If PZI were still an option, I may have considered that, but probably would still consider the L's superior. But why sacrifice long flat cycles for smile curves? I also think hypo is more of an issue with ProZinc because it's less gentle and shorter lasting.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks, Stacy, I really appreciate the info! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks, Carla, I'll do that! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Sending prayers to sweet Squallie and you , Lucy :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:Glad to see his +4 was down . Praying he didn’t throw up anymore :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
Thanks, Beth! No, no more vomiting, thankfully. Sometimes I think he just has too much bile from not eating overnight, and it makes him vomit occasionally. I was just surprised that he did it 3-4 times this AM. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I also know nothing about PZ, but what I've heard makes me prefer the depot insulins. I only used Lantus and felt it worked well for my boys. Perhaps @Wendy&Neko or @Marje and Gracie can give their thoughts, as they have used both Lantus and Lev, I believe.

Are you giving Squallie anything for the vomiting? If it's mostly bile, Pepcid might help. Harvey used to vomit bile in the morning, when he had an empty stomach, and Pepcid given at bedtime helped.

Thanks, Tricia. His vomiting is an isolated event, so I don't usually give anything unless he seems nauseated at breakfast. Thankfully, he only vomits like that once every several months. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I much prefer Lev for Teasel than ProZinc or Lantus. He was very bouncy on ProZinc and often lethargic in the hours right after a dose. He lived on his trampoline. Lantus was able to flatten him a fair bit but he still spiked and dove and, as Stacy mentioned, those dives could be early in the cycle so I had to shut down all plans for the day to monitor. He was also sometimes lethargic and grumpy on Lantus. I like Lev for him mainly because he feels better on it. I sometimes get good duration but often not. It's onset is late for him (+5 or so) but nadir is often around +7 and then he rises, other days nadir is at PS. He's predictably unpredictable as usual. I can relax more because of late onset, I've learned his responses and have accepted that it's the best compromise for Teasel. I truly feel the depot action is weaker with Lev. My two cents.

Honestly with Squallie being so well regulated I personally wouldn't make the switch. Lev was better for Doodles but he had a whole butt load of issues so he's not a good comparison. I also had a much harder time bringing Doodles numbers up on Lev then I did on Lantus but again by the time we switched IAA kicked in so that could've contributed.

Squallie does have some larger drops here and there but I don't see them happening frequently. It's possible his upset tummy contributed to the higher AMPS or maybe he went a little lower last night. Maybe try to get earlier tests in when his preshots are higher then usual and give a little food early to help keep him flat. Just my 2 cents.

Hi Lucy - Murphy went from Prozinc to Lev, so I don't have any experience with Lantus. I echo Kris's comments about not using Prozinc, and also echo Karen's about staying the course - Squallie continues to look terrific

Hope Squallie's tummy feels better. The IM’s are waiting for their morning exercise :bighug:
I have no direct experience with insulins other than Lantus. But I’m sure you’ll work out whatever makes the most sense for Squallie.❤️

Hi Lucy! I do sometimes feel like a Lev pusher:p so yes I am a big fan. I do however agree with @Doodles & Karen and @Carol & Murphy that Squallie looks good on Lantus. I see lots 'O :Dwith a sprinkle of  on his SS. I wouldn't mess with that. The 160 today very well could be attributed to the upset tummy.

Yes, I switched from Lantus to Levemir. Osha was extremely bouncy on Lantus. She would go from pink to lime green back to pink. On Levemir, Osha is much more flat. It has made a world of difference in keeping Osha in blue and green.
