Hi everyone,
Sorry for the late post, the training for my second job was due today and I just got it done. Woo :)
Shmee is doing ok, but he will hardly eat anymore without me putting the spoon up to his mouth. I can't figure out if there is something wrong or if he is just being picky / needy. He wouldnt eat his food again today, went back to an older food he used to eat (which he didnt like after a while) and ate the whole bowl! So... I am thinking he has just turned into a picky needy old man.. like a lot are on here I think, lol.

It's great that you have a surgery buddy. Two people from here went to CSU for SRT three weeks before I did and it was great to hear their experiences before hand.

I feel so lucky and grateful. I am going to be so overwhelmed and caught up in the experience (I am often an emotional wreck, I can only imagine how I will be there. I have already warned the doctor. Lol). I want to try my best to get as much info and photos as possible. If anyone has specific questions that haven't been answered yet I am all ears, I can start a Google Doc of questions if there are any (@LuvinThisPig).

Om my gosh Jeff I want to just do it all the time! He got some extra belly rubs from you and Theresa today! Oh yeah I love the "cat velvet" phrase. It is so true its just like velvet!

I wanted blue for Shmee but they were out! I'm sure he looks so dapper in it :)
 
Theresa thought he looked very sweet with the harness on, and his "cat velvet" showing.

She is also hoping the surgery goes well. I think there was only one case so far - a lady in UK got it done last year and it was successful on her cat. Wendy has a better memory than I do. I wish there was a place for "important files" on this site, so we could keep a repository of records like that.

Thank you! There have been a lot of cases of this surgery at the RVC in London. It is their "go-to" surgery over there. In the US we have some catching up to do, which is why the donor money is being offered - to get more data and hopefully help other cats here in the future. It has been done at WSU as well, not sure how many times. At AMC in NYC, there have only been five cats that underwent the surgery. Four are doing very well and one died :(. But the cat that died had many other issues including a very large tumor that was encroaching blood vessels. The doctor is very hopeful and said Shmee should go off insulin (best case scenario).
 
That is too bad about the kitteh in AMC at NYC.
Yes, I knew about RVC and their cases. But I think only one person on the forum related before and after experiences here.

@JeffJ search the high dose forum for hyperphysectomy. There was one kitty that got the surgery in LA, surgeons wife later moved to WSU where she started the surgeries. We did have one caregiver here go to WSU, but she didn't post a follow on. She was on FB exsclusively after that. I heard her kitty had bleeding issues post surgery.

I am glad AMC is following RVC lead, they have a good track record. There is also a surgeon in Australia learning from them too.
 
I've got a picky eater here as well. It's just flummoxing though. He ate the exact same dry food for 7 years before he developed FD without any complaints. I switch him over to wet and both he and Bella love it. Unfortunately, I find out he very quickly gets sick of the same flavor, so I have over 10 Fancy Feast flavors alone on hand at any given point in time. I even have other brands that he doesn't eat as often. Ugh. These kids, haha. I hope his appy perks up for you, or at least his pickiness/neediness calms down a bit. :bighug:

I cannot wait to get your report. I am really curious about the whole procedure. Surgery was something discussed at WSU, but not an option for us at all. The cost was simply too much.

I may not always post a response, but you can bet I am following along and rooting for Schmee and you!

@Wendy&Neko I believe I read an article not too long ago about that Australian surgeon. One of the RVC's doctors traveled there to teach him the skills, am I correct? They have already had on successful surgery to date. This was an article in RVC diabetic clinic I was reading. It's great that the knowledge is spreading.

Dr. Fidel mentioned they had marginal success at WSU with the surgery in dogs and a pretty solid success rate on cats. It seems that cats are more tolerable to these treatments, surgery and SRT alike. Perhaps it has to do with the size of the actual tumour...? I wonder what the difference is.
