Gee whiz Caryl,

I'm totally befuddled too. Could we blame it on the phase of the moon? I just don't know what to suggest. Hopefully someone will have ideas on what is happening.

On the plus side - he did get into the 200's yesterday, so at least he's not staying this high all day. But man, I so would like to see green again on him.

Me too Hillary, me too :(

come on back down, Alex....

You're still using R at preshots, correct? (I think those are the numbers that are cut off a little on the published version of the spreadsheet but just making sure).

Yes I am .5R
I am very upset. I'm confused.
Alex went back to the vet again tonight. He had a C&S done and it was sent out although Jaime doesn't think there's going to be anything there. He did x-rays to see if there's anything he's missing and the same tiny little kidney stone is there that has been there for about a year(Jackson has the exact same one in the exact same place)which may or may not be responsible for blood in the urine but Alex had low bg when that was there also and his blood chem screen just came back almost completely normal. At first Jaime was saying I must be feeding Alex something wrong but then he called me back and asked me to bring him in tonight to do xrays (he didn't think he had done them but in the interim he found them so he compared the stone)and to do the C&S because I was so adamant and he checked his ketones which were negative tonight and he had a small amount of leukocytes in some extra urine that he took but not nearly as much as before the antibiotics. He looked under the microscope and saw nothing like he saw last week. I am frustrated. I am trying process of elimination. I opened th solostar pens thinking the Canada Lantus is crappy but it hasn't done anything tonight. My heart is breaking I don't know why he isn't responding anymore. I'm supposed to go to dinner with friends tomorrow and I can't think of anything but Alex. This is becoming a sickness with me in spite of the fact that some people have the notion that I don't care about my cat enough to 'do what it takes'.

Hillary has been trying to brainstorm with me but I'm almost out of ideas. Do cat's insulin requirements just change maybe? Could he just need more than he needed before? I'm sorry to sound nuts but Alex is acting fine and I don't understand this .

ugh. i was so relieved when you said you were going to request a C&S when you took alex in to see the vet on the monday the 27th.
once abs have been started, you've messed up getting an accurate culture.

i think it would be helpful if you reread your thread on the old board: http://www.felinediabetes.com/phorum5/read.php?8,1950311,1950311,sv=1#msg-1950311
as well as dr. lisa's Feline Urinary Tract Health: Cystitis, Urethral Obstruction, Urinary Tract Infection.
many of these concerns/questions are addressed and answered.

if your vet thinks alex has cystitis, what about a pain med such as Buprinex?

and yes, insulin needs can change drastically if there's an underlying condition... cystitis can be very painful, but i don't have to tell you that since you've mentioned it's a condition you have yourself.

He was already on ab's then too. I don't know what he thinks Alex has. I mentioned pain medication in passing if it was but his first concern right now is getting his sugar down. Honestly, Alex doesn't seem to be in ANY discomfort what-so-ever.

oh, ok... i was just going by what is on his ss and what you've posted --- "chronic cystitis".
"if" alex is in pain... the best way to bring the numbers down is to administer a pain med such as buprinex. if the numbers come down, we know he was in pain.

when are you supposed to get the results of the C&S?

I don't know, when and if there IS anything to tell I guess. That's the answer I got.....as long as it takes any bacteria o grow...if there is any?

be sure to let us know when you get the results... they might shed some light on the numbers.
