Day 2 of our experiment.
Putty woke up very hungry. He does not eat after +3 so by ps time he has gone a long time without food. He emptied the top of the nightstand in protest this morning. Poor little guy. cat_pet_icon
As far as all the p's ....the polite one is out of sorts but the rest is fine.

Ah an experiment.....and you still have both legs, that's good. For what it's worth, my cats have been since summer on a meal schedule. They get fed at 6 am and 6pm that's it. The last few weeks I have been introducing a snack at lunch time which is going well. Spooky wines alot but it doesn't have much to do with food, he just wants my attention. 2 reasons for the 12 hour schedule here. First when I was struggling to transition him from kitty crack I needed him to be hungry (very hungry!) so he would be willing to try something new. Even after he started eating some canned food he would still eat only enough to try and convince me to let him have dessert (dry). Once he was getting only canned food he still would eat about 1/2 then wander around whining for something else, in the meantime Socks cleaned both bowls! Socks needs to loose a little weight so no snacking for him. Now they are both ready to eat when I put food out and they get down to buisiness and clean the bowls, eating takes 5 minutes and I don't have to watch the bowls all day to see who ate what. They haven't starved to death, I still have both legs and they know when it's time to eat!

What was his feeding schedule like before the experiment?
You are giving mini meals at +1, +2 and +3?
Very interesting....will be watching to see how Putty does today. Guess he does notice the change
himself, eh? Smart Putty! :-D Hope he will go along with it without a fuss....

Good morning,Miriam!
I wonder how much of food You give Putty at PS time--how much alltogether?
Very interesting to see that experiment!

I echo Bo's question; how much food is given total for the day?
Do you give 2 cans and each meal is 1/3 of a can, or do you have some other form of division for the am 1/2/3 and pm 1/2/3 meals?
Do you base the total amount on Putty's ideal weight?

I think many people will be watching this experiment.

Putty doesn't sound entirely pleased with this feeding schedule. I hope you removed all of the breakables from the nightstand. He's so good at communicating what he wants by shoving things onto the floor. Good boy, Putty!

Re: 2/1 Putty AM+2.5 170 +4.5 114

I am in the laboratory now dividing Putty's food for the experiment. ohmygod_smile
Putty gets 2 (3oz) cans of FF a day, with a few Halo chicken treats in between. His feeding schedule before was 1/2 can at ps, 1/4 @ +4 and 1/4 @ +8.
Now he gets 1/4 of a can at ps, 1/4 @ +1, 1/4 @ +2 and 1/4 @ +3. It will take some getting used to by Putty and myself. An hour goes by very fast. I do have a timed feeder which only has two compartments so may have to get another one with more compartments for when I am not home.

Putty weighs a little over 13 lbs. He used to be 15 before FD which was a little too much. I do not want him to get any bigger and this amount of food seems to have kept him at this weight.

Spike was reading over my shoulder and begged me not to experiment with "his" food. He likea a full 3 oz for breffus and will leave some for a mid morning snack. Then he likes a half of can mid afternoon and the other half for dinner. Then if his bean doesnt leave him a midnight snackus he will bug her to death...so she does. I do notice some days Spike will eat more than others. Hes a good 16 pounds and has been for a couple of years. Im looking to see how Puttys food experiment works out too.

Miriam,
the 5 compartment auto feeder is awesome! Shadoe loves it! I just don't know how you can manage to force Putty to eat all his food up front. Shadoe nibbles all through the evening, so it would be hard to change Shadoe to a 3hour gobbler! I divide up a bit less than that into 5 sections, and many days, the feeder turns while Shadoe was either sleeping or not eating.
Is Putty good to eat that amount every hour? And if he decides he does not want to play along, there goes your experiment!

I hope he does play along and you can get some decent test results.

Force Putty to eat all of his food...   Let me introduce you to my little Putster. Eating his his greatest pleasure....he lives to eat. I am very lucky that I have never had to deal with any eating issues that so many others here struggle with every day. He has a great appetite. He would eat all day if I fed him.
As far as the timed feeder goes.....I actually feel bad when I have to use it because when there is food inside he sits in front of it for hours waiting for the grand opening. He has been seen batting it around a bit to try to open it himself.

Ahhh, no WONDER your little experiment could be attempted! Shadoe is pretty patient and I have seen her on occasion just lying in front of the empty opening, waiting for the feeder to swing around and expose the next batch of food. She knows it's in there! She can smell it and has been seen sniffing along the edge.

the 5 part feeder may be good for Putty; it's pretty solid. And I am glad to hear he has a nice healthy appetite.

The image of Putty sitting in front of a feeder for hours, gazing in a forlorn fashion is just pitiful! Poor starving Putty!

(BTW, Gabby's morning was uneventful at 7:00 AM. It obviously took a sharp turn. Kinda like what Putty does these days!)

The image of Putty sitting waiting for the timed feeder to open reminded me of the picture of BK up on the counter waiting for his to open

I hope this experiment works for Puttman. It's so nice to see him in the blues so far today.

Uh,uh! I'm thinking about poor big sweet Jakey!
I tryed timed feder at +4 and +8 and he was sitting and waiting and start pushing around try to open. I just feel sorry for him.
Now i feed him at PS,+6 PS and +5. Don't know how You and Janice can do with 2ff (we need 3).
I will try to get by with 1Wellness(5.5oz= 220 cal).
Good luck with experiment!

It doesn't get any flatter than this but it is BLUE. dancing_cat

don't worry, miriam. the feeding schedule is designed to flatten him out. by loading up the first part of the cycle with food to prevent those drastic drops (when the action of the insulin is kicking in) and not feeding him after nadir (when the insulin is waning), we should be able to give him as much insulin as we can without sending him too low. this experiment is a work in progress. you won't see immediate results because not only could he be bouncing from the low yesterday, but the dose will probably need adjusting once we get him flattened out.

this method of food manipulation has worked well for many kitties for a few reasons. i used it with alex because she's so darn carb sensitive. i marked her levemir ss with an asterisks to note the times of her mini-meals. as you can see i did miss and readjust some of the hourly mini-meals occasionally, but the whole idea was to have her fed before nadir and nothing after.

hope this works for the putt-man!
