Good morning LL!

WCR: HUNGRY! 5 P's are good.

I have a couple of questions. I am getting new insulin today. I found out they do sell the Solostar pens individually at our local pharmacy. From my research, Solostar seems like the best bet. Each pen has just about enough to last a month without much waste. Any opinions or input on this?

Also, being that the Lantus we have been using is a bit on the "old" side (opened on 10/23) do I need to be concerned with her dose (i.e. what if it's lost any potency...etc). She has had nice numbers, it seems obvious that it's not toast yet and we're probably safe to continue the dose with the new insulin, but I just wanted to ask. I'm still new enough to the dance that I try to avoid assumptions. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

The rest of my plan is that I won't switch to the new insulin until Monday, a day that the vet is open, just in case.

That's pretty cool that your pharmacy sells the pens individually.
As far as the current Lantus you are using, if it seems to be working then you are the best judge of that... some people have been able to use their Lantus longer than others. (I used Levemir, so can't say one way or the other.)

You can wait until Monday if you like, but I bet you have enough experience and food control to use new insulin any time you want! :-D

We'll have to wait until Monday for new insulin anyway. Her vet wasn't in today.

We aren't liking these high numbers today. She's been very hungry and sleepy all day. Not simultaneously, but super hungry, then she takes looooong naps after I feed her.

I only have 2 strips left. I either have to suck it up and pay $50 for 50 strips or skip a test or two between now and Monday. I think I'll be buying strips tomorrow. If I skipped, I think I'd be too worried. nailbite_smile

I'd encourage you to bite the bullet and buy the strips. If you don't, you know Magnolia will have dropping numbers and you'll be a nervous wreck trying to run out to buy strips and get home or trying to find someone who can get them for you.

To be honest, even if Magnolia had a dip in numbers with a new cartridge, I think there are enough people who could walk you through what to do that you'd be fine. You've also seen how low numbers are managed with food. Having the beans here guide you through is a lot cheaper than a vet visit and you know that if people felt Magnolia wasn't safe, you'd be advised to get her to the vet.

Thanks Sienne.

I am fully prepared to bite the bullet. I think it will also be helpful to try some non-discount strips, so that I can be sure the super cheapo ones I have been using are accurate. I wish my vet had been in today so that I could use the new insulin tomorrow, while I'm home, but it's better to change only 1 thing at a time, right? Use new strips tomorrow, use new insulin Monday or Tuesday.

I'm home on Monday too, so I hope I can reach the vet early enough that they can call in the Solostar script and I can get it before her AM shot. Tuesday will be a very very long day at TBD. Actually, the whole week will be comprised of long long days. It's almost finals week! I have noticed that Magnolia is so much needier lately. She pounces on my as soon as I walk in the door. I used to be gone for a minimum of 12 hours a day and she didn't care. She would saunter out sometimes 20 or 30 minutes after I got home to say hello and get some love. She was using a self-feeder at the time, and now she relies on us beans for food. That probably has a lot to do with it.

ps. The frozen pucks are working SO WELL!! She didn't wake DH today until 7am!
