I called the vet this morning to get Capstar, and also for the prices for the Insulin Resistance and the Acro test. The tech said she'd talk to the vet and get back to me. Well, she called back with a list of tests totaling over $1800!

She said there is no IAA (Insulin Resistance) test. She said it is by process of elimination. She said they could do the Acro test, but did not give me a price.

She wants to do:
ACTH stem test $235
Two View X-rays $204
Blood panel & Uranalysis $219
Some other urin test $119
Fungal test $147
Crypto test $101
IGF (what she said is closest to Acro test) $120
Double Ultrasound $680

I told her I'd probably schedule a dental and maybe one or two of the tests.

She said they probably would not do the dental unless he has the Panel & Uranalysis and ACTH.

He had the full blood panel in October when he was put on insulin, I just did not have the Uranalysis done at the same time... would he need the full panel again?

I am so stressed, we do not have money for this!

no, you really don't need all those tests, just the two MSU blood tests are definitive. I'm sending a PM to Carolyn/Spot to have her come visit you with more info on the tests (the links are also in a sticky in the high dose ISG). I'm thinking the lab fees from MSU are under $100 total for BOTH tests. Your vet would charge extra for the blood draws and shipping/handling but it should still be fairly reasonable. Let's see what Carolyn says.

IGF-1 test is $44: http://www.animalhealth.msu.edu/Bin/Catalog.exe?Action=Test&Id=1401
however, there would also be charges from your vet for the blood draw and shipping.

IAA test (yes, there is one!) is $12: http://www.animalhealth.msu.edu/Bin/Catalog.exe?Action=Test&Id=1494
again, they'll charge you for shipping and the blood draw.

Hi Nancy,

Wow. No IAA test huh.. I wonder what test I ran on Leo then :-D LOL Lazy lazy lazy vet.

Acro test is about $44, IAA is like another $15 I think. You will have to also pay for blood draw and overnight shipping. I have a GREAT vet so my tests only cost me $80 for draw, shipping and actual tests. You need another vet, as I'm sure you have noticed.

I have no history here, Libby sent me a PM so I don't know what the fungal/crypto/full on battery of b/w is but I am wondering why in the heck her prices are twice that of my vet. Also I am not thrilled with her answer about the dental.

Handy tip: February is pet dental health month. You might be able to find a veterinarian running a special this month .. some are 50% off. Hope this helps!

one other thing re: dental bloodwork... unless you had that b/w done this month, you're not gonna get out of running a basic pre-anesthesia panel just to make sure there have been no changes with the kitty. You don't need THAT much b/w though. Usually I think it's right around $80-100 for that panel at my vet.

one more thing: my vet is not cheap, either. I'm not getting some sorta special discount or anything, and she's right about par with every other vet around here.

Thank you!

I printed the links for the two tests. I am going by the vet's to pick up the Capstar and will show them and ask if they can have it done, and if they'd do the dental (minus the full panel b/w). If the refuse to do dental w/o full panel and HyperT test, I will probably find a new vet (hopefully with the 'pet dental health month discount')

good condo today, ya'll just reminded me that I need to schedule a dental for one of my civvies while they're on sale. :-D
