Surgery went well. The surgeon said it wasn't as bad as they thought - he said that could be b/c the ABs seem to be helping. He said it was a great sign that his fever came down some before the surgery. He thinks he got all of the infection cleaned out. He said it looks like the leakage occured at the base of the tube near the stomach. The bacteria probably just traveled up the tube and infected the subcutaneous area. He removed the feeding tube and closed up the stomach. He placed a drainage tube in his side and said they'll remove that in a couple of days most likely. He was very positive about the surgery and is hopeful that Logan will recover. If he doesn't eat on his own, they'll put him back under and put in an e-tube.
Logan's albumin was at the low end of normal this morning - 2.3. If that continues to drop as they expect, they may have to give him human albumin. They won't do that unless he drops to 1 or lower. His ALT was still high this morning but it was lower than it was on Sat. The internist was more hopeful about the outcome since his bloodwork looked a little better today.
He's on a very high dose of ABs and I think he's on more than one. Until they know what type of bacteria he has, they'll continue to give these intraveneously. Once they get the culture results back they can just give the ABs needed and they'll be oral. They lost a cat a couple of weeks ago from the same problem. They didn't know the bacteria they were treating was resistant until it was too late - the culture didn't get back in time to save him. They went and looked at his chart and chose an AB that would've covered this bacteria and are giving that to Logan.
Recovery won't be easy and we'll have to take it day by day. We're happy the surgery went better than they originally expected. We will go back to visit in a couple of hours. We saw him just before and he was very alert and loving. I got lots of kisses and he even gave a couple to DH2B.
