Good morning,

Yesterday’s post:

We’re still searching for a food to help with his itching, and yesterday he refused the Rawz rabbit pate. He sniffs and comes back to it a few times and then walks off for good. With FF, he scarfs everything in like under a minute…

We’ve tried a couple duck pates and now this rabbit, all the same result. My question is, would you continue to try duck/rabbit from different brands? Or if not, what would be the next one or two most popular novel proteins?

Thanks in advance and have a nice day! - Tim

Ugh the failed food buffet dilemma. I just had to switch Petey to the rawz rabbit pumpkin, the last couple cases of the rabbit were too dry and different, he wouldn't eat it any more.

Good luck on your quest!

Lol! That’s great. And interesting about the Rawz. On the bright side, some shelter is going to be happy to see me with a forklift full of cat food pretty soon…

I have a similar donation pile going haha.

I emailed rawz and they said the inconsistency is a result of the fenugreek seeds (lots of studies on them lowering BG, too) they use as a gum substitute. And they do offer 100% satisfaction and it can be returned. I just wanted the food he loved back!

Oh wow. The case of Rawz I got here look okay, pretty moist. But obviously I have no other batches to compare to.

I’m tempted to get a little more hardcore about it, like just leaving the food and trying to force him to eat. But idk that seems harsh if he really doesn’t like it…

Beautiful cycles for Pookey!!
Wishing you lots of luck Tim. I know how hard it is to find something they love to eat that will be safe for his allergies. You’re doing such a great job!

Hi Tim I'm no expert but I did a search above and typed novel proteins and found this that Wendy posted to another member

For example, lamb, venison, rabbit, pork, kangaroo. Read the ingredients closely, many have multiple proteins in the ingredients. Try to avoid fish and chicken which are in a lot of commercial products.

Thank you Diane! I just remembered Wendy mentioned a couple other brands to me too.

I ordered a sample pack from Identity that has duck, lamb, rabbit, and bison. Low carb and low phosphorus too.

Tim, have you tried sprinkling Fortiflora on his food? Sometimes that gets Jude to try the food. It doesn't always guarantee a "like" though.

Try a Rawz with a different lot number printed on the can. Ask Leroy and his pickiness over the one yucky batch number we're having issues returning :p

I would try the same novel protein in a different brand. Sometimes it's another ingredient in the food that is the culprit.

Rabbit is the more common novel protein. Lamb and venison foods are out there but may be hard to find. Kangaroo is really uncommon.

Maybe try this? https://addictionpet.com/cat-foods/wet-food/ I think they used to have a wild brushtail (some kind of meat popular in Australia) but it seems like it's only in the dog food now.

Thank you! I’ll see if I can find the Rawz locally to get eyes on the numbers. The venisons I saw were pretty high carb, but Identity had a nice selection of the others. Question… do I call you Squeem?

Good luck with this food search. Hopefully you can find something he likes.
King Pookey only eats meals fit for a king :D:p

Happy caturday :cat::cat:

Would Pookey eat any kind of raw or home cooked diet?

Have you looked at Ziwi Peak? The venison is 3% carbs as fed (but 10.6% on "Carbohydrate Contribution to Metabolisable Energy" value). Blue Buffalo has a Veterinary Diet in alligator.

Found this: https://petkind.ca/pages/canada-fresh-cat Chewy sells this.

You can call me Squeem or Leroy's bean.

I’m still mentally preparing myself for home cooked… I’m surprised he took to the FF so well after growing up on dry. It must taste pretty good lol.

There are subscription services for cooked cat food but as you can imagine, they're on the pricey side. The food comes frozen so you'd need freezer space. I have no idea what the carbs would be.

Ziwi Peak brand? They don’t gave kangaroo which is strange since they are a new zealand company, but they have venison and lamb. Chewy has a variety 6 pack if you wanted to sample w/o having to buy a case. It’s not cheap stuff. I looked at ingredients and chickpea is only carb I see, but it’s a fiber w/ low glycemic index.

oh funny, i had not read every response and now see ziwi was mentioned already! That’s a sign. I thought of it b/c years ago (like more than a decade ago) I tried it just for variety for the cats I had at the time.

Thanks Laura! Let’s hope you’re right about the sign, I’ll do a deep dive on Ziwi today. FF has a grip on them…
