3/21 - Admiral Ackbar - AMPS 270, +2 91, +10 105

Hi, so here is my first post in the Lantus forum after Admiral Ackbar's initial diagnosis post.

Honestly, I'm mostly posting out of disappointment of AA's last two BG tests. His numbers seemed to be trending so well over the first week of testing. He did eat a bit more and different yesterday than recently though, but still only a 3% carb wet food (FF Tender Beef and Chicken Feast). Also, visited a new vet and got his temperature taking, probably a little shook from that experience.

He is definitely moving much better, hasn't really done stairs in a couple months and now he's joining me on other levels of the house again.
 
Welcome to the Lantus page! Nice job on all the formatting and stuff. Some people do see a bump up in numbers after the stresses of a vet visit, but overall seeing greens this early on is great!
 
Wow, just added the +2 91..that's a bit of a surprise from the high numbers last night/this morning. Fortunately, today my sister's available to test his blood. We'll see...

Edit: regarding the PM +5 315 last night, it was actually 327 on the first test, which shocked me..so i retested the other ear which was 303 and then averaged them to get 315.
 
Welcome to LLB. Seeing green this early is great! Looks like Lantus onsets before +3 and he drops fast. A snack at +2 might slow him down. Big drops can cause a bounce as well as bring in lower BG than few used to having.

You're doing very well for your newly diagnosed kitty! The worry and information overload in the beginning is A LOT.

I second the recommendation for several small snacks at the beginning of the cycle to slow down a fast drop. Testing at +2 or +3 can give you an idea if kitty is likely to have an active cycle. I have found this link on manipulating the curve with food useful:

It's great that Admiral Ackbar is moving around more already. My guy spent a full two months on the bed when he was first diagnosed.

Unfortunately, my sister called me on the verge of tears at +4, very upset unable to get usable blood from the cat's ear, saying he wasn't cooperating and was getting distressed, she was getting distraught. Clearly a whole ordeal and needless to say she was unable to test him. She had never done it before and had only seen me do it once or twice, but thought she could handle it lol.

Anyway, at +10 now he's still at 105. Most of the food was gone in his bowl. I took it away now, we'll see if he eats in a couple of hours.

edit: I guess this could be one of my first times shooting low...Do I do it no matter what in a couple of hours? Only if he eats? Skip it until later in the evening?

Oh no. How stressful for your sister - and your kitty. For most of us it takes quite a bit of practice to learn how to get readings quickly and calmly.

A blue at +10 is good going!
 
It gets easier for all but the most difficult cats. Give a treat after each stick even if not successful and tell your sister to also. Max was day for sticks and shots so I was lucky. Fluids was another thing. I found a treat he was crazy for and he got one after each session and he wasn’t a foodie. :bighug:
