Good morning everyone :)

My poor baby is suffering :(

Vomiting update:
He hasn't vomited any more since last morning. He had 1/2 the insulin dose for the morning shot and just a few tsp of food before we went to the vet.

I gave him SEB (Slippery elm bark), 2 ml in the morning. We started Onda (Ondansteron) at PM shot - 2mg every six hour. So far he's had three round and I'll increase to 3mg in the next time @+5.

He ate the full amount of plate last night, very slowly, in part and only with a syringe.

He was absolutely exhausted when we came back home. After a restless night, vomiting and a trip to the vet it took its toll.

My poor baby weighs now 3.5 KG. I think that's what he weighed when diabetes broke and he lost a lot of weight.

We had a very good experience with Onda. I'll keep it going until his appetite picks up.

He peed this morning.

I'll keep SQ 60-80ml a day.

Vet update:
We travelled to see the vet so she could get to know him before the surgery scheduled to April 9th.

It's a cat only clinic and it makes such a huge difference! The vet is really lovely a she touched him with skill and care. I was impressed.

She said that the teeth are completely rotten but she also said there are a plethora of problems and it could be the the inflamed yet is because of the teeth but also because of something else. And also that the vomiting could be because of the upset tummy from AB but also bc of the liver or the kidneys or or or .....

We had to ,make a choice whether to get him through a whole body scan inclined complete blood work and head CT.... or focus on the teeth and take it from there.

We decided to focus on the teeth. She can't tell me anything that would change the picture right now. The operation has to be done or it'll be the end of him.

If he passed the operation successful and there are still problem I'll have to take it from there.

Even if I had the money to conduct the full range of tests she was thinking about (2500$) I wouldn't have done it now because, to my question, none of the data would have been needed to inform her for the anaesthesia or the operation.

So the teeth extraction operation is the only certainty at the moment and that's what I chose to follow.

Interestingly, she said that the microlax changes their salt balance and it could be that that's what instigated the vomiting. It's true that his tummy was upset before but perhaps the micro lax made it worse.

I appreciated it that she didn't argue with me or attacked me or belittled me (all happened with past vets!!!) when I said that I give Fistuk 4mg of Onda every 6 hours. She just gave me two boxes so I have enough.

The goal now is to get Fistuk eating again and somehow balanced until the surgery.

For months I've asked him to hang in there with the teeth until we get to the vet. And a day before all hell broke loose. So I'm asking him now to hang in there until the operation and I hope he has engouh straight to do that.

Oh Shelly ... I am so sorry that you and sweet Fistuk are having such a difficult time. Sending prayers that he will hang in there through the dental work and can start feeling better once that's taken care of. It's always scary for us and not easy for them, but has the potential to solve a lot of problems. I think you are wise to take it one step at a time. And there is no question at all for anyone who's followed your journey that you have always and will always consider Fistuk's best interests above all. Hi Shelly, oh sweet Fistuk!! I am praying he will do very well with the dental and as everyone has mentioned, other things will fall into line. You are so thoughtful, considerate and careful when it comes to his care.

I'm really worried about Fistuk! He's been slump all day. He just lies on the bed, under the cover and hardly moves besides turning to the other side.

I fed him the whole breakfast amount this morning. Slowly. With a syringe. He can take only few tsps at a time, then a break for 1/2 an hour or an hour and the continue. I had to go to the doctor to remove the sutures I had from the surgery and when I came back @+6 I gave him the remaining of breakfast plus 4mg Ondansetron.

I gave him 60ml SQ @+8 and I tried him in the loo but he didn't do anything. I gave him one tsp of food and that's all he can take.

I wrote to the vet that I'm worried and that maybe we should give him AB to make sure he survives until the surgery (I asked if it'll be possible to get the surgery done before but she doesn't have any space).

She suggested that it might be good to take him to a clinic to stabilise him first. I just don't have the money for a clinic!!!!! I'm just heart broken. I'm still paying off the 5K for last year's treatments. They are kind enough to allow us to pay in a very small monthly installments. I don't know if they will allow us in the animals hospital in Zurich (it's not the closest clinic to us).

I'm just at loss at what to do! I know he's tired from not sleeping after the vimiting and the vet visit but I'm just not liking the way he looks, too lethargic.

Any word of advice would be welcome

I’m sorry to hear this. Were any labs done recently? Sounds like he could have a pancreatitis episode going on. Is he dehydrated? Is he keeping food down? What was the vet’s reasoning further a full body scan? I’ve not heard of that being done and wonder why. It sounds like she dies t know what’s wrong or am I missing something? I can’t see hospitalizing him until 4/9 even if you had all tge money in the world. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I don't have any ideas either, other than continuing what you did. I know how hard it is to syringe feed, you are doing so much for him. Is he in pain? Do you have any pain meds that were prescribed?
I am sending lots of god healing vines too.

We didn't do a blood test yesterday because she said that it's not going to make a difference in terms of the operation so I decided to spare him the torture. If she had said that she needed the blood tests we would have done it.

I'm wondering if it's pancreatitis because it's not behaving the same as the first time he had it (which was really a while ago). He does allow me to give him belly rubs, he actually welcomes it.

The good news is that I fed him 3/4 of his supper portion and he took it! with syringe off course but he didn't growl at me.
I took him to the kitchen as always for supper. He refused to stay there and stopped in the living room to gather himself. I let him be there because I was on the phone with the animal hospital. When he regained strength he walked back to bed.

He's hardly walking, his legs cross and he fumbles. But when I put him back on bed he waited for me, didn't fall back to sleep. I managed to give him insulin ad feed him so I'm encouraged by that. And the food he's had since he stop vomiting yesterday keeps in.

When I lift his scarf skin it bounces off quite quickly and his gums don't feel tacky to me. I have him SQ today and will give him every day. Maybe I can give him some water with syringe too?

The vet meant to get him to the clinic for a few days not until the 9.4.

I don't know if he's in pain but my guess is that he might be.
I wasn't prescribe pain medication but she gave me a few gabapentin for before the surgery - can I use this for pain?

I'm been worried sick for him this evening. I see some signs of improvement so I'm a bit relieved. I'm still triggered by the trauma of all the hospitalisations we've had back at the start so when he gets lethargic I get really anxious.
I do my best and it always feels not enough.

I too believe that with the dental work it'll get better. I just need the two weeks wait to pass quickly and for Fistuk to be able to hang in there and not crush.

Having called the emergency line of the hospital this evening I had a thought - maybe it'll be best to just take him there tomorrow. Because they might just do the operation. I don't know for sure that this will be the case. Hard decision to make

With pancreatitis Mac had some more acute episodes. Why would she want to do a full body scan? I think he will feel a little better with the teeth taken care of but some of the things you describe such as the way he’s walking don’t seem like that’s dental related. He doesn’t sound dehydrated so I don’t think sub-q needed. I hate for you to wait so long as I worry he will get worse. Where I live an ER would not do the dental. Sending prayers that is not the case.

She said that in order to say exactly where the vomiting or the teary eye coming from she needed a full body scan (including head CT). I didn't think it was necessary.

Fistuk has some neurological issues which made his walk quite wobbly and he's been walking much less in the past months so he lost quite a lot of muscle mass. This together with the weakness from the vomiting I can understand why he can hardly walk. It's not dental related indeed.

I gave him SQ right after he vomited so make sure he's not getting dehydrated. SQ always makes him feel better.

If to gets worse I'll take him to the hospital tomorrow, I won't wait any longer. The hospital here has a day care as well as ER and they do everything. I think it's also a teaching hospital. I've heard a lot of good things about them.

Hi Shelly, I’m relieved to read Fistuk seems more alert and ate. It’s good he let you give belly rubs.
He’s had a very hard day. Poor baby.
We are sending you much love and prayers for him to be ok through the night.
I guess in the morning you can decide if you think he needs to be seen by a vet.
Can they put you on a cancellation list in case you could move up his dental date earlier?

I don’t think the CT scan makes sense and seems excessive but I am not a vet or even a tech. I’ve had . If wanting to know about vomiting an ultrasound “might” be in order but not if he’s improving. If anything seen in a biopsy my cats had biopsies by endoscopy. I hope he’s now starting to feel better. Prayers there’s no need for the ER and he improves quickly.

Yes, Gabapentin works well for pain. Bella had it for a while for arthritis and then at the end, after her last blood clot. It helped her. At higher doses it is also a anxiolytic andhas relaxing effects, sedative even.
I am glad to read he is a little better tonight. :bighug:
