4/20 | Jude: AMPS 185; +4.5 101; +6.5 96; +9 119; PMPS 98; +3 65; +4 61; +5 87

This is a food topper I've been using recently. It's called Marie's Magical Dinner Dust, and it's made by Stella & Chewy's. This is low-carb, isn't it??? I'm a little worried about this morning's spike, and I'm trying to think of any possibilities outside Jude's pancreas that might have caused it.

That tummy is tempting, and he is so good about having his tummy rubbed!

Well, hm. I'm not sure. I tried to follow the guidelines on this sticky https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/calculating-calories-from-carbohydrates.205128/, and I came up with .19% carbs. I hate food. It always confuses me.
Yeah, I just used the Scheyder calculator. I understand it is not particularly accurate.
My brain seems unable to understand how to calculate carbs as per that sticky, no matter how many times I reread it. It's worse that trying to understand insurance or health plan info

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds it confusing. I just tried to follow the example toward the bottom and substituted my numbers into her formula. Who knows if I'm right. Just looking at the ingredient list seems to suggest that there are very few carbs in it, but I've been wrong taking that approach before. Thank you so much for trying to help me, though. I'm glad that Jude is back down into the greens now. It was an unusually high spike for him given his recent numbers.

Since its not a complete food, I'm not sure you can use the calculators and links to figure this one out. Have you tried reaching out to the company?
I'm inclined to say its low carb since the list of ingredients doesn't scream carbs to me. The first mention of carbs is fifth in the list of ingredients and its pumpkin seed. Is this a new food for Jude?

Hi Angela, Thanks for jumping in here. I haven't contacted the company yet, but I will. Yes, it's new for him. We just started it week before last, and I don't use daily, but I did sprinkle some on his food last night. I've been a little worried about it as I've been using it because I'm not 100% sure if it's low carb, and Jude has occasionally had some higher numbers. But this could all just be coincidental, though. I'm going to hold off on using it until I hear from the company. And I'm going to ask them if they can give me the % of calories from carbs, correct?

Why not try noting when you give it and see if a pattern emerges? When did you give it during last night's cycle? He saw some low blue/almost green.

Yes, you'll want the ME % of calories from carbs. If they can't/won't give that, then get the % on a dry matter basis (DMB).
Good luck. Some companies consider this proprietary information and won't release it  Hope that isn't the case with Stella & Chewy.

Based on the ingredients list and that its freeze dried, I'm still inclined to say its low. Even though a food may be low carb, there are some kitties that are very carb sensitive. Is Jude one?

I gave it to him right after his preshot, with his evening meal. Surely that wouldn't have caused this spike 12 hours later, right? He did see some good numbers in the cycle, but his numbers climbed at the beginning of the cycle, which is a bit unusual for Jude. He normally starts to drop (sometimes hits his nadir) about +3, but he was still going up.

After checking with the company, I will definitely note when (if) I give it to him to see if there is a pattern.

I've had experiences (like when we changed his food when he was first dx-ed, and he went into remission shortly thereafter) that it seems he is carb sensitive, but then there have been times when he was diving on a dose, and the carbs just weren't that effective in shifting the trajectory. All that to say, I'm not sure if he is carb sensitive or not.

Also, unrelated to anything other than perfect timing in catching Jude in major relaxation mode and in full yawn...he looks a little monstrous, but I assure you he is not :cat: He also looks a little fat, but I won't comment further on that :p:smuggrin:

That is one delicious belly, Mary. Please give him a belly rub from me! :kiss:Jude is so adorable!

Let us know what you find out about the topper!
Happy Easter :bighug::cat::bighug:

I would not use it. I give stella and chewy stuff to my non diabetic furries.
