Unfortunately, Gizmo has taken a turn for the worse starting yesterday. It was touch and go as it was, but now he is back to hiding in his litterbox and today he is eating very little. The past few days he has started drinking a lot again and peeing a lot (rarely in his box). Another odd behavior ... he is sleeping with his head on/in his water bowl. Last night, I moved the bowl and his chin was dripping wet. :(

We were hoping to get him to the vet tonight, but they have no appts until Wed. So I think we are taking him for an emergency appt tomorrow morning. I’m thinking his behaviors sound a lot like his kidneys shutting down, but I’m going to see if maybe we could get an antibiotic just to see. Last time he was really sick and spent the night in the hospital, he actually was so much better and even gaining weight while on the antibiotic. So praying this all might be related to some underlying infection, but I’m also being realistic that it is probably just his time to leave us.

His blood sugar has been staying right around 100 with the pred. So that is good. He is still getting pain meds twice a day. I also switched back to his cabergoline every day. His numbers started to rise rather quickly and I wasn’t sure if it was the every other day dosing of the cabergoline or the salmon pill pockets that I started using. So I quit giving the pill pockets and went back to every day with cabergoline. I know ... I should have never changed so much at once.

Hanging by the water bowl can also be a sign of nausea. Do you have ondansetron or Cerenia at hand? Maybe some fluids will help him. Good luck at the ER vet.

Feel better vines for Gizmo.

I do still have some cerenia and mirtz still in the cupboard. Maybe I should try some cerenia tonight. The ER vet is our normal practice. So at least I feel comfortable with them. He will be seeing a different vet though, but ... his isn’t available until next Sat.

Don't think immediately of the worst. What you have described (water bowl and peeing), are now normal for Rose. Vet says if she will drink, let her drink. She also gets daily fluids. Hope you can get into the vet soon and review labs for options. Wishing you the best!
Thank you for reminding me it might not be as bad as I perceive it to be. I’m trying not to let the “mass” rule my thoughts, but it is so difficult now that I’m aware he has it. :( Something is definitely wrong with my baby, but maybe it is not the worst as I fear.

I hope fluids and antibiotics help, can’t really hurt to try it, right? Feel better, Gizmo! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

The water obsession and lots of pee can be to do with hyperthyroid too, yes? Is that perhaps out of control? Maybe a med adjustment for that is needed?

My thoughts exactly ... hopefully the vet agrees.

not sure ... I will definitely ask. He is also losing fur ... not handfuls, but enough that I am noticing it laying around in small clumps.
Not sure how long Gizmo has been on pred but my civvie, Allen, got very weak on pred.
Sending hugs and vines!
He has been on it about a week (I think). It seems like forever, but I know it hasn’t been that long. I will ask if that could be causing it.

Thanks for all the vines and positivity. Gizmo just ate his snack and then promptly ran back into his litterbox, but he ate! I gave 12 mg cerenia so hopefully that will kick in soon and he will continue eating overnight.

Vines that eating helps Gizmo feel better, and more vines for him and for you.:bighug:

Your message just came through as I was about to hit Post Reply, and I broke into tears--happy tears. More vines for Gizmo!

Allen was on it about 2 weeks when we noticed the weakness; we took about a week to wean him off of it and the weakness disappeared.

Woohoo for eating! :joyful:

Civvie Theo was on pred for a year and a half. After a year he had some hind leg weakness. First couple weeks all he had were the sniffles. Pred is an immunosuppressant.

Wow, reading through this thread was like an emotional roller coaster. Started at the bottom and slowly climbed to the top. Think I'll just stop there! Paws are crossed that the Cerenia keeps doing the trick (and you can get more if needed). Sending appy vines and :bighug:s.

:bighug::bighug:So happy to read through your tread and see Gizmo starting eating! So glad Wendy suggested the Cerenia and it worked! Sounds like a lot of kitties have a reaction to the pred.:bookworm:
Hope Gizmo continues to improve and you have a cuddly weekend:cat:

Several times TiTi has slept by the water bowl, sometimes with her head in it. When her insulin dose got adjusted and cerenia was on board, the behavior stopped. As to the urine with no smell nor color, worry not. That is simply a result of drinking so much water, and when Chubba doesn't drink so much, the urine will become more normal. It's heartening that Chubba's eating and doing so much better.
