Oh my kitty cat! I probably should've tested earlier but wasn't expecting this much of a drop and took a long much needed nap. I gave him a tsp of honey with a quarter can LC. Will test again in a few to see if I need to worry about his PMPS. I have the HC food defrosting now.

Anyone have tips on storing FF gravy HC? I usually only need a tbsp or so at a time and then I pop the can in the freezer, but then it makes it harder to use for next time since I have to test, then defrost if needed so that delays feeding.

pop the can in the freezer,
I used an ice cube tray and portioned out teaspoons of HC (& my MC too) in it and then froze it - once frozen, I popped them out and put them in a ziplock in the freezer and labeled thee carb %. The teaspoons only takes a few seconds to defrost. If Jax was particularly stubborn coming up or if I really just wanted gravy, I opened a new can but tried my best to keep going through the freezer stash. You can also do what you did with the LC & honey - from what I understand, that's more of an experiment to know how many drops of honey to add to get the desired food bump. Hope that helps :bighug:

Surf safely, Kitty Cat :cat:

Ice cube tray is a great idea!! Thanks Susanne! Yes, I wasn't sure how much honey to put. on 8/13 from AM+10 to PMPS we went way up on his own so I didn't want to overdo it. Waiting another 10 mins before I test again just to make sure we're okay.

Is there a "preferred" option between HC cat food and using honey?

Glad he came up! I would get a +11.5 if you can.

I am not sure honestly...I've seen people do both - the Low Number sticky even mentions honey as a method (emphasis is mine) -
  • Depending on how carbohydrate sensitive your cat is, feed approximately a teaspoon or less of gravy from high carb food or high carb food only. (If you have a cat with GI issues, using a couple of drops of syrup plus low carb food is an alternative.)
Sorry I'm not much help other than it's perfectly fine :cat:...you could throw up a question on it or maybe tag Wendy?

Interesting, so it sounds like HC grvavy would potentially be not as good for a cat with GI issues. Kitty Cat did have GI inflammation when he first got diagnosed with diabetes so I guess I'll take this as honey would be the "better" option.
I do have all this MC/HC on hand though so I'll use the ice cube method as well until the can runs out. In case I'm interpreting this wrong and it's actually important though.. @Wendy&Neko do you have any thoughts on this?

I found that Neko had allergies to the wheat in the FF gravy food, and any other bread like snacks she stole. I went to HC with potatoes in it. Weruva has a few. Their Grandma's Chicken Soup is over 20% carbs, they have some Cats in the Kitchen pouches around 16-17% carbs. Cats differ on how carb sensitive they are and how much carbs they need to come up. I tried the higher carb food and found it popped Neko up too much, so went with the pouches most of the time. Also, time of cycle is important. Later in the cycle when the insulin is supposedly wearing off, you can get away with lower % high carbs or sometimes MC. I've also seen people who do home made food make their own gravy with stock and either potato or rice flour. Or mix the flours into regular LC. It's not as exact a carb % as in the cans. But can be fast. Another option I thought about, but didn't try, was some Honest Kitchen dehydrated raw. It has potatoes in it too, but you had to buy large amounts at once so I didn't do it. You can get samples of their products in the US though. Grace and Prowl are the names, one was MC, one LC, can't remember which was which.

Whatever you gave Kitty Cat at +10 today (good to have notes on amounts, when and carbs in the Remarks of the SS), worked a little too well today. Ideally you want to pop them up around 30-40 points.

Oh this is so helpful Wendy thank you!!!! I make sure to record in my SS anytime I feed something other than usual LC. I'll keep experimenting now that I know he should only be going up 30-40 points. Maybe I'll try just 1 drop of honey next. I switch between HC and MC, but I'm not very methodical about it. I was worried about being too low close to shot time, but hadn't considered the insulin would also be wearing off at this time and he shouldn't need as much help. Will keep all this info in mind for next time.
