Ok, I am getting REALLY worried and stressed out. This is what I have....

[*] Lantus 3 units
[*]Could not get any bg done last night she would not sit still.
[*]feeding her mostly wet food.
[*]Last night she was playful but not today.
[*]Vet says yesterday that she does not have a UTI

I am sorry but I do not know how to post yesterday's post to this one. I have to go to work now and will not be home for 5 hrs. I will take her blood then but Please someone help me. I am getting really scarred. nailbite_smile Should I take her to the ER.

Thanks

did you shoot this morning? did you shoot last nite? with no preshot test?

is 444 this morning's BG before shot?

Hi Jen and Anya,

Okay, I'm totally sorry Anya's BG spiked. Now you've got to take a deep breath. Now I'm a newbie, so I'm not sure what advice to give about a spiked BG but!

Sometimes it takes a good 15 minutes to get responses. And that's okay! Let's keep your BG at a healthy level...

Take a deep breath, and why not you test Anya in 15 minutes, to see if it's rising or lowering. By then you'll get some experienced advice. Keep the 911 icon, very good.

You're doing great! Hang in there!

Oh, and please update your current day on your spreadsheet, so we can understand your kitty's AMPS. It's blank right now.

Whoa, slow down. First of all On your SS it looks like you did not give any insulin last night (is that so?) If not then it's no wonder she is a little high (but not so high you need to panic). I'm concerned about your dose being maybe to high, and it looks like you have gone back and forth between 2.5 and 3.0U? I don't know much history here (your SS is not much to go on) Other than the suspect of a UTI does Anya have any other issues (ketones, DKA) and how long have you been using Lantus?

444 was before the shot and yes I did shoot this morning. Yes, I did shoot last night 3 units. I could not get a preshot her ear would not give enough blood. I am sorry I have not updated my spreadsheet I am doing that right now. Thanks :-|

Ok, the first problem is you do not know what her BG was last night before you shot 3U, then you didn't check it again until this AM before giving a shot, so we have no idea if she was getting lower last night. If she was lower last night then this higher 444 is likely a result of her liver throwing out glucose in reaction to the low glucose last night. This is a normal thing that happens with most cats (some more some less). I'm still concerned that the dose is too high, most cats don't need 3U) Have you tried a lower dose (1U or so?) did you use another insulin before beginning Lantus? If the dose is too high and you keep giving it, her liver will keep responding with increased anti-hypo protective hormones and you will keep getting these high numbers. We usually start at lower dose and increase slowly and in small steps to make sure we don't overshoot the target. You can always add a little more insulin, but once you inject a bigger dose you can take it back out of the cat kwim?

When you test are you giving any snacks? Moonie was untestable, until I started giving a little bit of cooked chicken at her testing spot & while she was eating, I would quickly test her- shoot--Then give her a meal..
Please dont panic--You are in control here! Now try to test in a hour to see where she is headed- at +1-Please try the small treat, even using halo livalittle chicken snax(freeze dried pure chicken-wont raise bg's) The cat is scared & needs a distraction until she associates testing with a treat or meal..

Anya will do better if she senses that you are calm--Cats pick up our anxiety..So try to even fake it if you can..Calm bean, calm cat--
I had the worst time testing & shooting I think , of anyone here!! Moonie was terrible!! But eventually I learned--

Hope today proves to be better for you--You are doing well for the very beginning!!

There's 2 possibilities here;

either she dropped too low last night and this is a bounce number or your shooting too much insulin.

Do you have the ketodiastix I mentioned?
Really want a keytone check Jen, then we can consider next step. Can you get any checks in today? Even if it's at +5 (would prefer before this if possible)

So glad you didn't hoot 4u. Anya's body can compete for a while with flooding her system with glucagon to stave the efects of too much insulin, but only for so long.

We really need some info. Please don't be scared we're here with you.

How are her;

peeing
pooping
playfulness
purring
preening?

Can you put some detail in your comments at the side of the numbers too.
What food (5 carbs it is), how much and at what time it is given. When trying to test, give her a little treat beforehand, even a tiny morsel of fresh boiled chicken will do.Hold her on your lap, cutch her and talk sweet nothings to her. It will help calm you too. She will pick up on your distress. Your buiding a close trusting relationship here and it's harder for some more than others. I had to wrap Lucky in a blanket as she was so fractious. In the end it wasn't the treat that she wanted but the blanket, cutches and sweet takkings too

Whatever you do, right now you musn't increase her dose anymore till we have other pieces of the jigsaw. k?

Deep breaths.

Here's the link to your post from yesterday: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4554
You simply cut the http code from the post and paste it to today's condo.

Monique - Anya was dx in June 2009. The vet started Anya on 2u.

Jen -- this isn't anything to panic over. It will help to have more tests. One thing that often happens is that if Anya has a lower BG number than she's used to, her numbers will bounce up. It's a result of her liver "panicking" and dumping glucose into her system because her body isn't used to lower numbers and interprets this as dangerous. We refer to this as liver training school (LTS).

This may or may not be what's happening. We need more spot checks in order to help you figure out what's going on. There's not a need to panic. This isn't a crisis. If you look over some of the numbers in the subject lines of the condos here, you'll see numbers in the 400s. Please take a breath and slow down. It will really be OK. You can take the 911 out of your subject line.

Please answer Ronnie's questions.

For tonight, please get tests in the evening. PM tests are just as important as tests during the day. Without that information, we are missing half of the data.

Jen...I guess there is a chance that Anya got into some dry foo too? that would of course add a spike to
her numbers.
I am concerned about the dosing here. I read that your vet has told you what to give Anya and then raised it. We hear about
high dose prescribed by vets all the time (My Shadow as started out on 4.0u bid Vetsulin and Raja was prescribed 3.0u bid)
It took me awhile to forget what my vet prescribed....and to listen to the experienced people on this board. I changed their dose to 1.0u for Shadow and Raja got .6u bid. I went according to the people here and their time-proven plan of starting low and going slow.

If you click on my Shadow's SS you will see high reds and even some blacks in the beginning.!!
With the Red numbers, there is nothing that one can do to quickly bring them lower. It is a gradual process.
Infection can cause high BGs
Not enough insulin can cause high numbers
Too much insulin can cause high numbers (as Monique described above)
High carb dry food and canned gravy food can cause high numbers

I am going to suggest to you that the high number is not an immediate emergency situation. LOW numbers ARE...
the high numbers do damage over a period of time. unlike the low numbers which could mean a hypo situation...
We try to lower the high reds with the proper insulin dose, the proper foods and it will show improvement over time...sometimes it will take weeks to lower the numbers as you increase the insulin dose very slowly... .25u at each increase after days at one dose.

I suggest that you take some deep breaths and realize that you will have to work with someone on the right dose...if you are game to lower the dose for Anya...and begin at a lower dose and follow the protocol that we follow here on the board....is that something you think you would like to do? It will take a lot of reading on your part....all of the links that people send to you and it will mean that you will try to use the hints for home testing. (warmed rice sock on the ear so the blood will flow better, treats to reward the testing...for both you and Anya... ;-) )

It will be ok Jen....we can take this slowly and do it so Anya will start to get better numbers...are you ok?
Can you update please? ((Jen))

She said she would be gone for 5 hours at 9:23 EST so I'm guessing it'll be around 2:30 EST before she can check back with us. I'm really worried about hypo at those high doses.
