Have any of you had experience with FIP or know someone who has? I’m interested in the symptoms, how it was diagnosed, what treatment was used, how the cat fared, how long you think (in hindsight) it might have been “brewing” before the cat became critically ill, were there any clues on the bloodwork, and so forth.

Also, has anyone tried the oral form of GS-441524 that recently became available (legally) in the US? What was the cost? Dosage? Length of time to treat? Was it successful?

For anyone who use the black market injectable form, same questions as above—cost, dose, duration, as well as manufacturer and any side effects.

Did the cat relapse after treatment?

Any data on lifespan and quality of life after treatment?

Has anyone used remdesivir?
 
I can't help with your questions, but there's an excellent Facebook group if you're on FB. It's called FIP Fighters

I have read a little there and know they warn against using black-market stuff.
 
I don’t have experience with FIP but now vets have the medication. Look on the Cornell Veterinary School Cat Health site and you will get the necessary info. In the past your only option would be FIP Warriors. I would join that group. I believe it’s a Facebook group. I’m sorry you are going through this but at least now it’s not an automatic death sentence. Good luck and I hope that’s not what’s wrong. :bighug:
 
I have quite a few success story kitties that were on GS and are healthy :) with my line of work in animal welfare we always seem to have one or two being treated with it. The Facebook group is definitely very helpful!

Hi there
My cat Tansi has been cured from fip for three years. The best advice I can give you is join the Facebook group Fip Warriors. They were an indispensable resource. I was assigned a group of 3 helpers that were available 24/7.
At the time of diagnosis treatment was not available in my country.
This group of volunteers saved Tansi's life. If you join the Facebook group you will be contacted immediately with support and all your questions will be answered. You do not have to research everything yourself, they will help and you will not be alone.

What happened with Tansi is he was not himself for about a month. We took him to the vet and he received an (incorrect) diagnosis of pancreatitis.
Unfortunately because he was 15 years old and an indoor cat, the correct diagnosis was missed. So we treated him for that and he got worse and worse and we were advised to put him on a feeding tube. Before that happened, I noticed he had a fever and looked bloated, so we took him to emergency. Finally the correct diagnosis was made and I was advised that it was a fatal disease (fip) and should consider euthanasia.

Fortunately one vet took me aside and said to contact Fip Warriors. Once I did that everything changed. It was expensive and a lot of work, but so so worth it.

We had to syringe feed every 2 hours for a week. I was advised when to bring him in for bloodwork at the vets office. It took longer for him to show signs of improvement because he was an older cat, usually you will see improvement almost immediately.

After around 3 weeks he began eating again and things improved rapidly after that.

So far he has been healthy for three years. Relapses are not common but do happen. My other cats did not get sick.

Thanks everyone. I have an older cat who was just diagnosed with likely FIP (it’s generally a diagnosis of exclusion, although we did send out fluid for the PCR test). He’s hospitalized and started treatment, but it’s touch and go right now.

Similar to @Cindy loves Tansi, my guy wasn’t diagnosed immediately. The progression was slow and he had weight loss over time, seemed quieter, appetite waned gradually, and bloodwork was relatively unremarkable from 6 months ago until now. It was all very subtle, the symptoms and data not pointing to anything specific. He was ok until he wasn’t, and then he declined precipitously.

I am not on Facebook. Does anyone know whether there are ways to access the groups and their knowledge base in other ways?

Also, I’ve seen references to FIPWarriors, FIPWarriors 5.0, FIP Fighters, Cure FIP, and a few other groups, as well as some reference to FIP Warriors splintering off due to certain concerns. Anyone have an opinion?

If you get Facebook only for that, you will have a huge advantage in saving your cat. Please consider it :bighug:
 
Hi JL, I just sent you an email, I have an FIP Global Cats admin lined up to speak to you via text so that you don't have to use Facebook. Please email me back asap.

Everyone else: I have unfortunately had two cats with FIP. One was a foster kitten with wet FIP, Jake, that we adopted after successful treatment and observation. The second was our 14 year old, Max, that was under a specialist IM vet for many months and just kept declining -- FIP was never mentioned. We unfortunately never found out that Max had dry FIP (which admittedly is much harder to detect than wet FIP) until his necropsy. We started treating Jake and received Max's necropsy results the same week :arghh:

I will not get in to the specifics of one group over the other. The rescue that I volunteer for treats every single FIP case we get, and back when we treated Jake, 2021-2022, we used FIP Warriors and strongly advertised their services on our website and to our adopters. We now use FIP Global Cats (FGC), which is totally non-profit, unlike FIP Warriors. FGC is the only group that we recommend to our adopters: https://www.purrpartners.org/fip/ I'll leave it at that.

I have already emailed many of the documents that FGC makes available on Facebook to @JL and Chip to get started reading while we are working everything else out. But in general, if at all possible for anyone else it is really advantageous to join the FB group. After you request an admin, most communication is done between you and your admin team by Facebook Messenger, but of course you have access to ask users any questions you want, and to access all of the resource documentation. But I hope you never have the need for it! :bighug:
