Kristen I've started a new topic in here for you. Her Kitty's name is Sam.

Yes, it is H's home cooked I can try to help you with that. The current calculator on the KWYF site does contain beef heart I think. It is usually though though best to stay with one variety of animal if possible.

Also it's important to not that I used that food as a "food enhancer" and mixed up to 50-50 with another food. It was purpose built to give me a way to reduce the fat in many foods since H was a pancreatitis kitty. Thus while the food should be nutritionally complete per AAFCO, it does run on the low side for fat. But if you mix with say Wellness it makes for a 'great' IMHO diet.

It take owning a food processor and a couple scales. I can help you with equipment if you get serious about it. I also have reading for you too that I can send you. If you like PM me your email and I can send you stuff.

The reasons I'm leaning toward it is because it's low in phosphorus (important for Sam's renal situation) and I like controlling what goes into my cat's food. I'm going to order a sample of the Alnutrin and see if my guys like it first.

Right it also is lower in P so you can add it to most other foods and it will improve their P levels. Since it is so low in fat I do recommend mixing it. At one time I was working on a recipe that was higher in fat and thus could be fed more as a complete diet. I'd be more than happy to help try to guide you on creating a new recipe.

The two areas that many foods need improving IMHO - fat content and P levels.

I'm betting Sam will like chicken liver too.

Another thing too is you don't have to cook it - you can do a raw recipe [except for and veggie component] with the KWYF and that would help reduce the prep time by a lot. But maybe it would not keep as long in the fridge?? That's just something you would have to figure out what you were comfortable with.

I made a SS for Sam! I'm rather proud of myself. lol

I would love to source organic liver. I'm going to check with my local health food shop to see if they stock it, or can get it. I definitely appreciate your offer of help. What kind of Wellness turkey do you use? Does it just say Wellness turkey on it or is there some other name? I assume it's low carb, but just also high fat. Must look for it next time I'm at Petco. The Cowboy Cookout is being eaten, but I can see it's not their favorite.

Hmm. What do you think about mixing this chicken stew with the lc FF varieties?

Whole foods has organic chicken liver. It's actually not that expensive. The organic chicken breast or thighs though is $$.

It just says Wellness Turkey and I think it's in a green can. It has little yellow sticker that says "grain free." It is low carb, 'high' fat, and somewhat reasonable P as compared to other foods but still not low enough for my taste.

It should be OK to mix with the FF flavors. If you can keep the fat of the mix between approx 35-45%. Of course you can't do that based strictly on a weight ratio basis since it is actually 35% - 45% of Kcal and not weight. But I mixed 50-50 by weight with the wellness and it was fine. The difference in Kcal/gram or energy density of foods is not THAT big. I think I did the math at one point. Many of the FF flavors are higher in P though?? So they may not make the best base to start with - something you would have to check.

Anyway, you just kind of work from the outside in with that. There are a lot of things to "perfect" when making your own food. First you have to find something that they will even like.

Just got back from Sam's check up at the vet - really good! All of his numbers (kidney values included) have either improved or stabilized! AND he's gained 4 ounces (a lot considering the time in which he's gained it) - the vet was really impressed with him and one of the vet techs even said he looks like a whole new cat. The vet said she's very impressed with how well he's doing and the care he's getting. I've been doing curves, and I brought the numbers in with me so she could see them too and she just thought that was awesome. All in all, a very good report. He goes back in a week for another recheck and reassessment. I feel like a weight has been lifted off me to some extent, you know? That my efforts have been worthwhile.

Oh, and his sugar was 191 when he was there. Very happy with that! I can't help but think the new low carb diet is helping.

I suggest you post a new topic whenever you have updates and/or would like input. Many here post daily others semi-regularly.

Good to hear about the improvements thus far.
