?? Positive Fur Shot

I just gave Phoenix his morning insulin. When I was injecting it, I felt the wetness and the needle went through his skin and out the other side. His fur was soaked.

I know they say not to shoot but Phoenix got his first green number 92 yesterday. This morning he was bouncing and back up to 325.

I could just kick myself for being so stupid!!

Would it be ok since it was a definite fur shot to wait a few hours and check his BG and give him half of his regular doseage. I hate to see what his BG will be tonight without any insulin for 12 hours.
 
Bummer! It is so frustrating, fur shots always happen at the worst times!

Unfortunately, though, you can't re-shoot, no matter what his number is. There is simply no way to tell how much insulin actually got into him. Especially with a high dose like 7U, wetness of fur isn't reliable-- that's a lot of liquid, so even if most of it got in the fur would be wet with just a small portion spilling out.

Don't worry, though-- he'll get back on track soon enough. Now that he's found out about the greens and how nice they are, he'll want to get back there!
 
I knew that would be the answer. I am so disappointed in myself for doing that. I have a consultation with his vet tomorrow. I was so proud of Phoenix's progress and now his numbers will be high today.

But, I am extremely grateful to all of you for your help. Phoenix wouldn't be healthy and running around today if it wasn't for your help. Like you say, the vets don't seem to have the experience that all of you have. It is extremely disappointing to give a fur shot, but I have a cat that I love and that is what matters. Don't beat yourself up, fur shots happen (and always at the worst times! :rolleyes: )

Some people keep a "fur shot jar", putting a few coins or a dollar in for each one. At the end of the year, you can buy a nice treat for your cat and/or yourself :woot:!
 
I know how easy it is to beat yourself up over a fur shot. It is also easy for me to want to find a solution, like what you were thinking. However it is truly best for safety, to follow the rule of NO! Never re shoot.
Once I gave a probable fur shot, but Tina's numbers didn't prove it was a fur shot. Maybe at least the depot will help Phoenix out a bit for this twelve hours. He may just have a bit of a lazy day.
I take Lantus every morning. A few days ago, during an extra hectic morning, I shot myself twice. After several lovely lows over the next 24 hours, it took 3 days to really level out.
I know what happened with you was different, but Phoenix will be fine!

And Yes, they most assuredly happen at the worst times!!
 
How right you are !! While I could see it was a fur shot and saw the needle coming out the other side of his skin, I do think he must have got some of the insulin. While his numbers did rise, they only rose to the 300's. Past fur shots rose to the 400 - 500 level.
