My neighbor's kitty was just diagnosed with FD. The vet has recommended Senvelgo which I'd not
heard of. The vet told her insulin was difficult so to try this and return for checks about every three
days initially. When I googled it, sounded like a new drug with the FDA saying it can increase the

A good insulin for diabetic cats are ProZinc and Lantus they are both a 12 hour insulin kinder to the cat, tell your neighbor to log into our Feline Diabetes Forum, we will help her getting the data we need , as well as helping her with diet, dosing and any other concerns she may have, this is a World Wide Forum with extremely knowledgeable members ready to step in 24/7, we need to know more about your neighbor's cat in order to help her, and yes DKA is not pleasant for a cat, it can complicate the health of a cat

There have been some horror stories with Senvelgo, but also some people seemingly having success. Haven’t seen any information about remission with Senvelgo yet either.

Hey, Carol. It's been a while!! Hope we can offer some insight.

I see that Diane linked our post about the newer diabetes meds. Senvelgo is an SGLT2 inhibitor just like Farxiga and Jardiance which are used in humans. They offer some advantages for caregivers who do not want to give injections -- or their cats are exceptionally hard to test and shoot. Vets seem to want to "sell" Senvelgo due to its ease of use which to some degree is true. However, while there are pluses, there are also minuses. If a cat has kidney issues including being prone to UTIs, the medication is a big "no." It's especially a "no" if there is any indication of ketones. Cats often have a robust positive response but there's not an efficient way of knowing if a cat is in remission and as yet, there's not a great deal of research into how to know if you can stop Senvelgo if a cat is in normal numbers. The other minus is cost. The cost for all of the necessary lab tests and vet visits can be a lot.

Given your experience with Yoshi, perhaps you can provide your neighbor with some insight into managing FD with insulin. Like Tim noted, we've had members who have had good success with Senvelgo. We've also heard some horror stories. The latter seems to be the case when the vet is poorly trained on the use of the drug (e.g., recommending it for a cat that has ketones present). There are a string of comments in the New Treatments post. One observation from the post is that the guidelines for the use of the SGLT2s seem to differ in the US and the UK. Other members have posted in the Health forum about their cat's response. You can search to see some of those posts.
