Wet Spot After Injection

Hi there,

Going to contact my vet, but wanted to hear from the group as well incase they have some insight.

I have given my cat insulin at least 100+ times over the past few years (he's gone into remission and out a couple of times)

However on the last couple of injections, when I pull out, I see that there is a wet spot.

The first time, I thought maybe I somehow missed

The last 2 times, I literally made sure it was in, and kept it in for a second after pushing all of the dose in, but still a wet spot. This has been done in 2 separate locations

He gets 1 unit, 2x a day, using Carepoint Vet U-100 31g 5/16" Syringes

Skin is tented when I do it. Areas are shaved down, so not a fur shot.

Any idea what could be happening?

Did you sniff the wet area to see if it smells like insulin? What insulin are you using?

Fur shots happen even to the most experienced diabetic cat owners. Take your time and go slow. If fur shots continue to happen, maybe it's the syringes. Try a new box or a different brand.

It's a fur shot most likely the needle went thru the other side of skin, or the needle bent, or you shot too close to a bone, I shoot straight down and you do not need to press hard just in, too hard it may break the small needle inside the skin, it happens to all of us, but you do not want to give another shot, some insulin may have gone in, and you might overdose

Could it bee the needle hub was wet from the drawing up of insulin and that is the wetness you feel? If it looks like the insulin is working then maybe it’s just excess insulin on the hub

Also I need to go look at the careloint syringes I have but if they’re the ones I recall the hub has a small raised collar like extension —hard to describe. I felt this sometimes tore my cats skin a little allowing it to leak but he has a tumor causing fragile skin. Which ever brand it was that’s why I stopped using them. Others I stopped bc they were only whole units. So I will look when I’m in my medical supply closet

Edit: I don’t want to open the bag to take a picture (planning on donating to shelter this week) but yes there’s a small raised collar at the base of the needle.

Carepoint syringe:

It does have that little "bump" at the base of the needle.

OP can try dabbing off any excess insulin from the needle and base of the needle before injecting.

IMO I’d dab the barrel or base but stay away from the needle itself (in case there’s any confusion about what you are dabbing) as it’s sterile (admittedly cat skin isn’t but no sense in potentially getting paper towel microbits mixed with insulin either)

Thanks for the responses. To note, it's not fur shots because he has the injection areas shaved down.

Could be the base

I'm using Lantus, and the times it was wet, it did smell like it
