I was finally able to talk to my vet regarding Freckles' dental appointment on January 10. He said that seeing as she gets her insulin and meal so early in the morning (5:30 am) that I can give her half of her insulin and half of her food before bringing her in for dental. He figures he will will start working on her around 10:00 am. @Wendy&Neko had asked if I got feeding and insulin vet advice in a previous thread . I picked up probiotics and S. bouillardii so will have them on hand. Vet also wants me to give doxycyline 5 days prior to dental to get ahead start and ward off any infection. Blood tests and xrays will be done prior to the dental work. Anything else I should know or ask about/

Today, I picked up the Freestyle Libre for Freckles. My vet is willing to give it a whirl and place it on her when Freckles is anesthetized during the dental, although he has never attached one to a cat before, so I'm thinking he's open to suggestions. I haven't been able to find a lot of information about using the Libre on cats, but I did find a thread from FDMB from about 1 year ago. Some of the recommendations was to use a Kitty Kollar to cover the sensor (I made something similar tonight and it attaches by velcro) and vet tissue adhesive to make sure the sensor sticks to the shaved skin. I also saw a recent youtube video of how to attach to a cat. Any other suggestions for the Libre?

As always... thanks!

Tagging @Crista & Ming who has become her vet's go to person for the Libre.

I like your vets ideas on insulin and food before the dental. Of course, if you get an AMPS that makes you nervous you can always lower further or skip. Might be interesting to know how often they will test her BG during the day/procedure. Make sure you take some of Freckles regular food in, so they feed that after she wakes up, instead of some HC thing they have lying around.

You’ve done your research! :bighug: I’m sure your vet has access to VIN and probably already read it (a website for vets that has lots of articles) but there’s an article he can go and read about how to attach it and about the Libre being used in animals in general.

The only other thing I’d say is you want to place the Libre where there isn’t a lot of movement and skin folds so you get accurate results. I put Ming’s under his shoulder blades. I feel like above and where the neck is (which is what the article on VIN recommended for cats I believe) has a lot of movement and one time, a kitty kicked it off in less than 24 hours. I mean, kitty can kick it off anywhere since they’re so flexible

I’ve seen it put it on the side of the belly and anywhere along the spine (mostly on the bottom half of kitty).

Thanks Crista. Would it be alright with you if I printed off the picture of Ming wearing the Libre and showed it to my vet?
