Yesterdays flat blue surfing day

We had friends over all day yesterday, so Ivana didn't eat all of her lunch, or all of her dinner/midnight snack. Got up this morning, did the T/F/S routine, all good. Went back to bed. Got up at +2 and she'd dropped significantly. Turns out she hadn't eaten much of breakfast either, so I gave her 1/2 pouch of 12c as an alternative. She's hungry, because she comes running when I call her for food, but is only eating small amounts. All aspects are fine, she's pooping ok, etc. But yeah, with this +2, all I can say is it's lucky we didn't have any plans today, because our plan now is to monitor her all day. Crazy cat!

Hi Tara

I am right with you. Gus is doing that he runs to the food but eats only little bit. We had to medicate him and it helped just little.

Sending prayers and vines for Ivana and you.

How do you tell if a kitty is nauseous? There's no vomit anywhere that I've found.

Yes we've tried all the new foods. But now we're wondering if maybe we've introduced too many new foods too quickly. Ivana is a creature of habit, so for her lunch at +5 we will go back to one of her old foods (that is still FD and CKD ok) rather than the new things. She's surfing the greens at the moment, but it's still early in the cycle so we'll be keeping a close eye on her today.

Yes, best to introduce new foods slowly.
She may be nauseated without vomiting. One of the things they will do is go up to the food interested but not eat or they may smack their lips together or lick their lips a lot. They are all signs of nausea.

I wonder if it's a side effect of her antibiotics? We are supposed to give them with food, and we have been, but because she eats smaller meals since FD dx maybe it's not enough in her tummy to combat the ABs. She's still eating, just not her regular amounts, and not doing anything with her lips. I guess we'll just keep an eye on her, and if she stops eating altogether then we'll need to intervene. Oh when I gave her the HC earlier this morning, she finished that in one go.

2.2 / 40 at +5 ergh! Gave 2t HC. This is her normal lunchtime, and I think I will give her MC carb for lunch after she's finished the HC.

ABs can nauseate us so there's no reason to think it can't happen with Ivana. If her appetite continues to be decreased, I'd check with your vet. Either Cerenia or ondansatron may help with the nausea. You don't want to give an appetite stimulant until the nausea is under control.

Good to know Sienne, that's what it probably is I'd say. The timing of it definitely makes me think that. She's got four more doses of the ABs to go, almost halfway there. She ate the 2t of HC, and also a little bit of the MC for lunch.

Also, I think I will take the reduction tonight, even though I know it's not a standard reduction because it's caused by her not eating as much. I know I will likely need to go up again once she's back to normal.

Ivana - just to let you know, there is a range of greens above 70 that are much happier places to be for both kitty and bean.:D She does seem to be a cat of extremes. Congrats on the reduction - it's low enough I'd take it too.

You might want to try a probiotic or Fortiflora to replace the tummy flora that ABs can kill In addition to the pumpkin.

I should never had introduced her to Sheba... they are like twins in their extremeness!

Good plan for the probiotic though.
Hang on Auntie Tara.....dat's a bit wuff!
I just being welcoming to Ivana and showing her da wopes.
She telled me she wanted to hab some fun wid da slippery slides so I be good friend and show her! ............how did I know she be big daredevil like me........Sheba

Ivana is coming back up again... for now!

Question regarding phosphorous content: So the threshhold for phosphorous content for CKD kitties is 200mg/kCal. I've looked up canned tuna (human) on NUTTAB, which is the Australian government guide for nutritional values. It says that per 100g, tuna has 190mg phosphorous and 497kJ which is 119kCal. So that means that tuna has 160mg phosphorous per 100kCal. That makes it ok for CKD food, right? Just checking my calculations.

sounds like it, although I'm not sure about how to calculate it. Canned tuna isn't nutritionally complete like a cat food is. I'd limit it to treats.

Dr. Lisa on the www.catinfo.org site suggests limiting fish - but I know you're fighting to figure out what she'll eat, so maybe it's fine for her. You can read about it on the catinfo site and see what you think.

Canned tuna has been on her menu for a while now, it's in the rotation a few times a week, not an every day food. I think it's time to check out the catinfo site again when I get time. Although I still haven't time to fully research CKD yet, argh so much to know :banghead:
