I can't believe it. He is high again. I gave him 1 unit. He is behaving ok but I don't know what to do. Why is this happening? He ate ok today but drank a lot. Absolutely Zero contraband. Vet said his eye infection wasn't an eye infection so much as effect of dehydration.

Is it just a lack of insulin? Just checked pee.. No ketones.

R lasts 4-5 hours, give or take.

An option to discuss among those who have done it is picking up some R (often available by request at a pharmacy) and using a tiny dose of it to knock down the highs when they are sporadic, or part of an ongoing condition such as infection. This may let the depot insulin work better.

Maybe he'd do better on a different insulin.

So when Bailey got the good (ish) numbers yesterday he had two insulins in his system?

What's the strength like of R? They were giving him 0.5unit so if he had 0.5R and 0.5lantus is that roughly like 1 unit lantus?

Hi Wendy,

I haven't ever used R, so I can't help you out with the specifics. We used N, which was fast-acting with harsh drops. From what I understand R is basically the same as N but has a quicker onset and shorter duration. (I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that.) You might flag down Julie or Marje. I think they've both used R along with the L insulins.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Lantus works best on lower numbers. R helps by bringing down the highs so the L insulins can do their job. The amount of R used is determined by experiment about what works for your cat. Some people only need to give a drop or two.

No, they work differently and don't add together.
If you chose to test it out, you would start when you could monitor, and give an extremely tiny dose (drops even), then test hourly to see how its curve was in Baily.

I used it some with Spitzer when his glucose was extremely erratic from the intermittent vomiting, diarrhea, and inappetance from IBD.

Yes he is hyperthyroid .. He is 65 and they don't treat till over 60. So we have been treating for two weeks now.

Big issue was dehydration. Cause.. All his issues and we are hoping due to us being away for two weeks when he didn't eat drink properly and didn't get insulin. Of course there could be another issue .. Cancer or something... Which is my main fear....

Oh and he does have a broken tooth under one gum, but the vet didn't want to operate due to his issues. And said it could be an issue later. This could be it now I guess..

Hyperthyroidism runs the body faster, and possibly uses the insulin faster.

And OW on the broken tooth!!!

the tooth alone could be responsible for these high numbers. i'd try to get them to take care of that asap.

hyperthyroid can also make it harder to get control of BGs.

it looks like you doubled his insulin tonight. i'm not sure if you're thinking about the R dose and adding them together or what, but remember that Lantus doesn't work to beat down high numbers. It's going to take him a few cycles to recover from the reduction last night to 0.25u.

Of course, I know you're watching him like a hawk. I'd just make sure you have plenty of strips and HC and are ready if he dives.

i hope he feels better soon.

The tooth is under the gum line so might be ok. Ok now i am freaking about a hypo... I have a ton of syrup and HC wet though and tons of strips so I am ready..
