He ate a bit overnight. 33 grams (appx 1oz) of a/d and almost a tablespoon of young again. Per the webcam he snacked off/on all night - so YAY! He is at least showing interest..

I set up his feeder like normal with his normal food. I put MMR in his PS meal. He ate a tiny bit but am hoping he goes back and finishes it. I am planning on putting some more of the a/d down (free-fed) for the day. I want him to have access to food when and if he wants it.

I set up a small litter box down stairs in the den (where he spends most of his time). Since he is weak and sick I didn't want him to have to traverse the stairs. Nope, he still came up and used the one in the master bedroom - lol. Silly cat - just like his mama, creature of habit. :cat:

He did have a nice poo last night.

Do you think I should give him Ondansteron before I leave?

@Doodles & Karen - after last night I got to thinking... He hasn't been healthy and had normal blood pressure in quite a while. I went conservative on the dose. Thanks.

Tons and tons of "thank-yous" and :bighug::bighug::bighug: to all here for the support the past week (and always). I am hoping we are turning it around.

I hadn't heard of this. Thanks. Raw is supposedly forbidden while she is on antibiotics. I could substitute cooked egg yolk? Vegetarian here: so can I buy chicken livers in a package? I cooked her radcat raw and she has already stopped wolfing it down. She wasn't wolfing the 17% carb canned food she was eating at the ICU either. She is going wild for fortiflora. I need to start her insulin again tomorrow. She is stuck in the 200's.
Hey Gizmo! If you eat it maybe Yum will eat it!

I haven't heard about raw and AB? New one on me. You only give a tiny amount (1-2 tablespoons at a time) plus the chicken livers are raw also. I got the chicken livers from Krogers. They were in a tub (16oz) like sour cream near the chicken in the meat department. Wish you were close - I have some in the freezer and still have the ingredients (left over liver in the freezer).

Eta-here is the condo where I wrote about the LS.

I'm glad Gizmo is eating some for you. I hope he will continue to eat during the day. I don't think it can hurt to give him the Ondansteron. Sending prayers.

Yeah for eating! And yeah for the webcam to see what happens when you aren't looking. I hope he continues to eat for you.

I have not heard about AB and not feeding raw food either.

I'm with Carla about the Ondansteron,

I was looking for something on the computer in some old folders and ran across some very early pictures of Gizmo. This is right after he "chose" us. Thought I would share.

Thanks for the links.
Yum finally stopped begging for a food upgrade and ate all her food overnight. She has eaten 90% of her breakfast in the first 3 hours! I am giving her 100 kcal at each meal for now, microwaved raw food. We did our first 100ml SUBQ. It was easy.
What are these vines? Good appetite vines to Gizmo! His appetite is more important than his blood sugar right now, unless his blood sugar influences his appetite.
I don't know if no raw when on antibiotics is a strict rule or if it's just the vets not wanting cats to eat raw while they are involved in outcomes.
Yum goes in for bloodwork tomorrow and I will ask the question and let you know.
Gizmo, I hear your tummy growling!

Love your kitten photos of Gizmo. What a charmer! Thank you for sharing them:bighug:.

@LizzieInTexas @MJW @Bobbie And Bubba
re @MJW 's mention of her vet suggesting no raw feeding during antibiotic treatment: sounds like vet isn't averse to raw feeding but is h/she concerned about lowered immune response bc of the three antibiotics (the convenia injection and the two oral antibiotics) that destroy both good and bad bacteria? If so, all the more reason to include broad spectrum probiotics, whether feeding raw, cooked, or other.

re @MJW liver shake questions: re raw egg yolk (pardon my repeating this, which I think I also included on Lizzie's condo that she linked above): my civie Azalea (who is 20 yo, ckd, with fiv & related gingivostomatitis), didn't like it with raw egg yolk. I substitute plain powdered egg white (for added albumin, low phos, and other nutrients) and occasionally add powdered egg yolk in small quantities for the egg yolk lecithin benefits even though it is higher in phos than egg white). I don't see any reason why you couldn't add cooked egg yolk and or cooked egg white (never do raw egg white) and blend it all together with the other ingredients. If you use the egg yolk &/or egg white powders, be sure it's pasteurized, no additives, and the powders or the eggs from at least Grade AA or better eggs.
re whether the raw liver would be an issue regarding your vet's cautions about doing raw while on antibiotics: I've given the liver shake when cats were sick including while on antibiotics...but ECID and Yum's situation right now is different than Azalea's. And if the raw nature of the liver is also an issue, why not lightly steam or cook it and see how that goes? Hope this helps :bighug:

What aprecious lil beastie. It's good luck when a cat chooses you, or at least that's what my Grammy used to say.

Yeah for neg ketones! Keep on eating Gizmo.

I wonder if that's just a vet who doesn't like raw feeding - period. Neko's been on AB after a dental and her vet knew she ate raw. Not a problem, except the day after the dental he wanted her on canned. I have heard of the no raw food when immunocomprimised, just as when on chemo. But I've heard differing comments on that too. One oncologist vet said no raw on chemo, Neko's IM vet was OK with me feeding raw when she was on chemo. Guess which one I listened to. ;)

I don't think there's a problem with giving ondansetron, I hope you did.

This was the concern re: raw with Gizmo from Dr. P - she was worried with already having so much going on that if he got compromised raw it might push him too far over the edge that it could be detrimental. At the time the only raw I could get was Instinct and Stella and Chewy and they were too high in phos. Then he decided that he wasn't that excited about it so I gave up on it all together (plus it was a PITA to get it - only place that carried it was about a 45 min drive away).

I did ;)

He has eaten about 2 oz of a/d and a tablespoon of YA today. He is such a good boy that he finished the last of the a/d around 2pm (making the "no-food" cut off with 30 min to spare). Will be real curious to see what his numbers are tonight.

Gizmo was a stray that we suspect rode into the neighborhood in the engine compartment of a car and then climbed out and got left behind. When he showed up he had been well taken care of - clean ears, clean eyes and had a flea collar on. My stepson wanted to keep him but I told him no, that he definitely belong to someone. He and another neighbor boy took him door-to-door looking for who he belonged to. I posted on the neighborhood forum and no one claimed him. He bounced between our house and the neighbors houses for about two weeks until one Friday evening he followed hubby into the house, walked straight up to me, sat down and meowed - "hello, I am here to stay". I put out some food and filled the litter box and we proceeded to leave for the weekend to go fishing. The mini-blinds and curtains were still up and intact when we got home Sunday evening. I hadn't quite recovered from loosing my sweet Missy-cat of 18 years just a month and a half earlier and I reluctantly told him he could stay - gave it one more chance to find the owners and told him if he got a clean bill of health from the vet he would get a name. His name came about because every time he ate he became a holy terror - lol (Gremlins).

To this day he is terrified of loud engine noises (diesels, fire trucks, semi's, etc). It is about the only thing he has ever been truly afraid of.

And, as they say, the rest is history.

The math worked out with his age that he was born very close to when Missy got her wings. She had green eyes too, though she was a standard short-hair tabby. It was like she sent him to me.

Riding in a car's engine has to be terrifying.
I suspect that in some way or other, Missy did send him to you.

Ahhhh, barn cats :bighug: A barn kitten stole my DH heart last spring as he was working on a property . All alone and only a few months old , she ruled the roost at this vacant property . He brought her home on a tornado warned night last spring and , like you said, the rest is history :) We are currently cat sitting her for my son who is temporarily out of state .... her name is Tuffy ;)

Being raised in the country with lots of "barn" cats it was something we were always careful of especially when it was cold. My dad would always pound his fist on the hood and yell "out" before we left - lol.
I'm out in the country, so I check under my car and look under the hood. I like your dad's method better than mine. Going to try it

Still not eating "on-demand" so no food at PS - I am leaving it out (regular LC food) to see if I can get him to eat a bit. I am going to give Cerenia, Ondan, BP and 1/4 Mirtz in just a little bit. I really want him to eat a bit before I give the AB. I am going to free-feed again tonight (and probably through Saturday AM unless eating dramatically improves. He is dehyrdated I can tell - I may take him in for another 50(?) fluids tomorrow PM or go and pick up the "kit" to give at home. I will email Dr. Jen in the AM.

He has eaten 25 grams of a/d and had his meds and AB. The vet office called "just to see how he was doing" and I asked the vet about the sub-q fluids. She will get them ready for me to pick up tomorrow after tfs. Cost for the fluids, tubes and syringes will be $55.

The vet office is a God-send.

Give the Cerenia and onda about half an hour to work before giving Mirtz.

Seems a bit pricy for fluids and lines/needles.
I put it all in the same capsule. I hate to torture him any more than I absolutely have to. Poor lil guy. I think another dose or two of AB and we should be almost back to normal. He is eating, just very slowly. But a bit more every cycle now. And he is drinking from his water bowl.

Thanks for the info on the fluids. It will last a while and I don't have time to "shop"

The AB cost nearly gave me a heart attack

Some hydration will help with any nausea. It will take a while before the antibiotic kicks in. Once it does, he'll feel so much better.
