I've been fighting fleas for the last couple of months. I had to take my civvie, MC, to the vet this morning because when I put Advantage on her last night, she started drooling. It appears she licked a little bit of it. She moved when I put it on and I didn't get it on the back of her neck completely. This morning she was still drooling and wouldn't eat. The vet ran bloodwork while she was there and gave her a cerenia shot. This evening she is eating and seems better. However, the vet left a message for me while I was at work and said she has anemia. It's most likely from the fleas. The vet said it should clear up if the fleas clear up. She didn't say I needed to do anything.

Is there anything that can be done for anemia? I still have some B12 that I was giving to Simba. Is this something that might help MC? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry MC is anemic, did the vet give any numbers? Treatment may depend if if MC has renerative or non regenerative anemia. The latter is more what CKD cats have and when you' supplement with B12. There is more on Tanya's website.

Work that juice Furball.

Sending prayers to MC and you :bighug: Maybe check with your Holistic vet for remedies thst would help .:bighug:❤️:bighug:❤️

I would tag Marje to look at the bw labs. Did the vet say why wbc is so high? Was he concerned about that?
I didn't get to talk to the vet. She called my house while I was at work and left a message. She didn't seem concerned about the anemia and thinks it will clear up on it's own.

The fleas are bad. New ones are hatching. Every time I think I've gotten rid of them, new ones show up. I've tried flea powder, flea sprays, ACV, and Advantage. The first couple of months the Advantage didn't do anything. Then last week it finally worked. The instructions said I could give it after 7 days if the fleas were bad. So I gave another dose yesterday.

Hi Carla, I have just a bit of experience with anemia, with one of my kitties who had CRF. Since MC has fleas, that to me would indicate a regenerative anemia. She can produce red blood cells, but is losing too much because of the flea infestation, and her body can't keep up. Her HCT is low enough to say she is anemic, but not yet low enough to treat with erythropoieisis stimulating agents (ESAs) like epogen or aransep. I think giving some B vitamins is a good idea.

Hoping you can get rid of those nasty fleas, I would think that would help immensely to get HC back on track. :bighug:

@LizzieInTexas I've been treating the wood floors (I don't have carpet) and the furniture with sprays and powder. One of the problems is I am a bit of a pack rat and have boxes stacked up in some rooms. It's hard to know where they are coming from.

The Advantage normally works and it doesn't get this bad, but for some reason this year the first two months I used it, it was like I didn't do anything.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not sure it would work for me.

@Christie & Maverick Thanks Christie. I may try the B12 tomorrow. I'm hoping to finally get rid of the fleas.
You're welcome! There seems some signs of infection in the blood work, but I'm not that good at reading those numbers, and thankfully don't have experience with fleas  don't know if they are related, glad you tagged Marje, she can shed some light on the full BW, and she will most certainly have some better insight on what else is happening and what you might be able to do.

Carla , I did use diatomaceous earth along baseboards especially . I became ( sadly) a flea research hound several years ago when we had a flea problem and learned they only get on kitties to eat then jump off and they tend to migrate toward perimeters of rooms . Also I had to cover furniture where they slept and washed those covers every day ( used old sheets) . I would close them out of rooms and spray with Raid Flea Killer Plus which kills all stages of the flea. Use diatomaceous earth sparingly as it can bother your and kitties breathing . Very very fine powder . Hope some of this helps . Sending dead flea prayers to you and your kitties. ❤️:bighug:

Hi Carla, So sorry to hear about MC and the fleas causing anemia. When our Alice had a huge infestation of fleas we vacuumed every day for 6 months. This was in the days before Advantage, FrontLine Plus, etc. We used flea collars and finally had to take her to the vet to have her "dipped". Perhaps try FrontLine Plus instead of Advantage? Your fleas may have developed immunity to Advantage. Borox sprinkled around walls and cupboards gets rid of roaches. Maybe it will work on fleas, too?

Hang in there.

Furball, Flat Pink doesn't look good on you!

There is a product called Tempo SC Ultra that might help. It is labeled for indoor use, but I’m not sure I would use it inside. I spray my grass, and around the foundation, doors and windows. It is safe for pets and people as soon as it dries. I very seldom treat any of my animals, there aren’t any to get on them. It also works on ticks, ants, spiders, scorpions etc. I haven’t used it, but I’ve heard the diatomaceous earth that @LizzieInTexas recomended works well. Fleas are so hard to get rid of once they get started.

Carla -I assume the anemia from flea infestation is from blood loss (flea bites) - that can mean iron deficiency anemia which can cause the RBCs to be small - so the MCV would be low. But that is not the case for MC. What is puzzling is the high WBC- and all of the individual WBC components are high (neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils)- that is unusual. Usually, just one component is high - like in a bacterial infection, neutrophils are high, in a viral infection, lymphocytes can be high, in an allergic reaction, eosinophils are high, etc. I would definitely call the vet and ask about this.
