Sorry I didn't get to update yesterday Shmee is still doing very well on the shot of Bupe he had Friday. I am so frustrated with my vet. I called as soon as they opened so she could call and get prices / put in his order for the liquid or ear gel form of Bupe. They will not let me do this myself with the prescription, she said she needs to call it in because its an opioid. Well she didn't have a chance all day so now I am stuck with waiting until tomorrow for them to call it in. I bought another $50 shot today and I really do not want to spend the $ on a third one, so hopefully the meds come asap. I went up there twice today after work to see if she had called yet, the second time I asked for the dose so I can at least call and get prices. The dosing is very confusing and I don't even know if I am going to explain it right. The shot he got on Friday was .28mL's. Dr. Lindsay said the dosing is different for the longer acting meds (shot) versus the shorter acting meds (ear gel or liquid), and wasn't sure how to dose him the first time I called. Well when I went up there later, she wrote down that .15mg (mg...?) a dose should be good for the ear gel or liquid. Either of those would have to be given 2-4 times a day. When I talked to Dr. McCue about the dose he said Shmee should get about 20% less than the Friday shot because of the eyes being dilated and the odd behaviors. Well that would be .22mLs... I just have no idea anymore. I called Diamondback and its about the same price for the gel and the liquid. Both doctors said the ear gel isn't know to work as well as the liquid, so he may need more if I go that route. I think I am just going to try it at this point. I am a money pit anyway so whatever at this point. I will have to call the vet back tomorrow with my decision so they call in the prescription. His blood sugars have been pretty high, so Dr. McCue said the increased pred could have caused that, and is reducing again to .5 AM and .25 PM. I am second guessing myself doing this second job...… I wish I could be on here more.

Thinking of Susan and Sophie @sbluhrs as she gets the same surgery Shmee had at AMC. :bighug:

So glad the bupre is working. I use to get the liquid and Dr ordered it in 30 cc quantity with refills from diamond back. The first time took about 4 days to get it. Once you know Dr ordered it, call diamond back to give them your info, don't wait for them to call you.

PS I also just wasted a half a cerenia because I put it in butter then have no clue what I did with it. I think I washed the butter off the wrong finger. Hopefully that and its not in the butter! Ugh I cannot keep my mind straight

When my civvie Simba (GA) had cancer in her mouth I had to get bupe compounded into a transdermal gel to rub inside her ear. It worked great and took care of her pain. I gave it three times a day (every 8 hours when I was able to and as soon as I got home from work when I wasn't able to do the 8 hours exactly). :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I am glad to hear that Shmee is doing better. Take care of you too. :bighug:

Increased pred dose will also make him hungrier.

Good luck with the bupe prescription. Since it's a controlled drug, here the vet's need to use a special prescription book to track it. So the whole ordering process is more time consuming, especially the first time. Bupe liquid is supposed to be absorbed better. BTW, Neko's bupe dose was also 0.22 ml.

Sorry to hear your vet staff is so lame. I would have been calling them hourly. What a pain to spend another $50, because they didn't get to your order.

Glad to hear that Shmee is incrementally improving. It's probably the cooler weather!

Also really glad Shmee is doing better. And how sucky is your vet! My little guy’s bupe was ordered and filled in the same day by the compounding pharmacy. Your delay should never have happened.
