Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all have a happy and healthy 2018 - and the kitties too, of course! :cat:

Darwin is doing very well, and goes in for his full mouth extractions tomorrow. I know he's in the very best hands, but I can't help but be nervous as all get out. I am used to being there for all of his procedures at my work, so it's awful to know I am dropping him off tomorrow. I'm feeling blessed that an ex-coworker of mine works at the dental specialist, and is going to be his technician tomorrow - she will give him extra lovins! He's going to get a pre-sedation dose of Gaba to ease his nerves about 2 hours before I take him in, so he'll probably be feeling OK (why don't we get to do that?!?)

Send those good dental vines his way, please! (and maybe some anti-anxiety vines for me?)

Never fun for cats to have procedures, but double that if you are used to being there and you have to drop him off now. How fortunate that you know someone on staff who will be caring for him, that must be a bit of a relief!

At least now you can erase teeth from being an issue for Darwin in the future entirely! Sending you tons of good dental and anti anxiety vines! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Happy New Year! Wishing Darwin a pain free mouth for 2018! ;)

These procedures are hard on the kitties, but I think they're even harder on us. Just try to focus on the positive. He's in skilled hands and he's going to be much better off once this is all over.

Piling on the dental vines for Darwin. It's good he's going to a dental specialist.

May be of some help in the future or to someone else.
Noah should have had all his teeth pulled a long time ago but cannot be put under and has an awful reaction to oral BUPE. He has been on transdermal BUPE long term with no side effects. Made at a compounding pharmacy and expensive but worth every penny. Tag me for details.

We recently started transdermal BUPE after you shared your experience. Do you have issues with exess BUPE drying into crusty chunks on the ear? I massage it in, but there's always dried clumps on the edges next time. I use a warm wet rag to try to get them off, but Maggie is so sensitive about having her ears touched... of course, since I have to poke them for blood and apply the BUPE to them.

This couldn't be more true! Once he's all healed up (and I am hoping and crossing every limb he does as amazing as his October procedure!) - it'll be a major to relief to have one less mouth to worry about!

    Thank you my friend! :cat:

Agreed! My vet removed 5 teeth in October, but is always very honest about teeth that he prefers to let the specialist tackle. Once we got the news back from the specialist that they recommended full mouth extractions - he was more than willing to have me take Darwin there. Extractions are no fun!

This is actually VERY cool! Darwin doesn't do so well with oral medications, but he's tolerated Bupe in the past. We have many cats at the vet I work for though that cannot be medicated, and need other meds (usually Methimazole for hyperthyroid) made into a transdermal gel - never seen it done with Bupe! I'll have to ask our compounding pharmacy if they can do that!

Seen this a lot with transdermal medications! We usually recommend people do that you are doing. We prescribe a lot of transdermal Methimazole, and kitties always have crusty ears when they're on it (and naturally many will not allow their ears to be cleaned).

Just dropped my little man off! He was feeling pretty good on his Gaba (despite not eating all the tbsp of food this morning).
The doctor thinks he’ll do great! May only need a few doses of Bupe after as well, as they now use long-acting dental nerve blocks (can last up to 72 hrs)!
Already was sent a photo of the girls ooing and aahing over his mittens! :joyful:

The BUPE we get just disappears into Noah's ear, no chunks or flaking. There is no ingredient list with the packaging, I would imagine there's more than one way to transform something into a transdermal state and I have no idea whether the pharmacy even pays attention to it being treated as a veterinary medication. I perform all my Voodoo in one sitting with Noah and having his ears tickled is his least favorite thing, go figure. I've caught Noah's basket-buddy Andy licking Noah's ears so that can't be good.
Poor Darwin. We have some real drama Queens in the house when oral meds time comes around. Noah just hated the taste like liver & onions or cod liver oil. :blackeye:

Sending lots of good healing vines, I'm sure the extraction will go fabulously well. Chin scritches for Darwin, he looks like he has some adoring fans at the vet clinic, which is no big surprise, well because, he's just so adorable :p

Darwin's home, and he's SO happy!! As with his procedure in October; he's loving his drugs - should I be worried about him becoming an addict? ;):joyful:

He did GREAT for his procedure, and was already in the kitchen looking for a little snack  Everyone said he was a very good patient, and didn't give them any trouble - phew! So proud of my little guy, and so relieved to have him back home! :D:D:D

Thanks everyone for your kind words!!

Poor guy is hungry, but not really wanting to eat. He’s still numb, and I wonder if his mouth feels weird when he tries to eat. He’s going from bowl to bowl, but not eating much. He doesn’t seems painful though - if he keeps it up I’ll probably go ahead and give some Bupe.

We always keep some on hand, but Darwin won't touch the stuff (he's such a particular cat!). He won't even touch his food if I accidentally add a little too much water to his pate :rolleyes: He did paw at his mouth a couple of times, so I just went ahead and gave some Bupe. Hope that helps - he did lick a little of his food, but not a huge amount. o_O
