Barb is unable to get a clean no food AMPS so we get what we can get. Jospeh was unusually hungry this morning ate half can of food before his shoot. Resulted in an abnormally high pre-shoot value. And now an unexpectedly low +3.

I'm going to do a +4 to make sure he is isn't falling more and maybe I start waking up early to get some +1's and +2's due to the "dirty" AMPS

Good catch on the drop today! Are you feeding low-carb, or something else? That's right on the edge of the "take action" number. I'd definitely get a +5, too (poor ears, but it can't be helped if he's going to drop like this!).

Can't help on the phone interface, sorry, but I'm sure others can.

It is low carb. I'm unsure if I should start breaking out the MC stuff. It's right on the line but it's early in the cycle. Looking through my numbers I may have just discovered that he hits nadir very early and rises around +5 and +6. I'm here and able to test as much as needed. I have MC Fancy feast, I have high carb dry treats and I have honey on hand. I feel prepared to deal with a further drop if it happens

No, I think LC is the way to go for right now, I was just asking for information. Sounds like you're well prepared for whatever he's got in mind for the rest of the day!

+5 is 63. He ate about 1/8th of a can of LC after the +4 check.

Am I good to skip the +6 check? I have an appointment that would cause me to leave at +6 and not be back until +9. I can cancel it and monitor if needed. Does the rise mean I'm out of the woods or should I keep a state of high alert until I get safely to +7.

I think you can go to your appointment-- your call. There are never guarantees, of course (after all, these are cats we are talking about! They consider it their solemn duty to keep us guessing!), but he's holding/rising at the moment. At this point, I would normally say that you could increase the gap between tests anyway, though if you go to the appt. I'd probably get the +6 on your way out the door.

You can leave him a little LC snack, too, for a little extra insurance. If the +6 number worries you, you can bump the carbs up to be safe.

Since the appointment isn't a big deal to reschedule and this is the lowest we've seen him I'll cancel the appointment. I'll get a +6 to make sure he is okay and do a +7 or +8 depending on the +6. Barb is coming home a bit early and will get a +10 and whee we got a curve today lol.

+6 was 77 and clean (no food in the last 2 hours) Wanted to make sure the +5 wasn't a food bump. Looks like we are out of the woods. Gonna get a +8 and +10 to fill out holes in the spreadsheet and see if he has a 2nd dip later in the cycle

Hello Alberta! Just popping in to say hello and welcome from BC. Great job with the numbers today.:D Handled it like a pro.

+8 is 115. Smooth sailing. Barb will get a +10 and PMPS and we will go from there.

Plan for the weekend will be to hold to a strict LC diet and zero treats. Try and see what we can do to get cleaner PS values. Jospeh is handling the BG tests now like a champ with barely a flinch or even raising his head much at all if he is napping. We will fill the holes in the spreadsheet over the weekend and I have my fingers crossed we will see lots of green with some blues.

He can have treats, simply make sure they are pure protein. Like some plain cooked meat or chicken. Lots of other choices too. Food and treats before nadir is better, so that the food/treats don't spike him up after the effectiveness of the insulin starts to wear off.

No treats sounds to me like denying myself chocolate for the rest of my life.;):nailbiting:

p.s. 185 is not an abnormally high pre-shoot value. Think of BG's >300 as being high.

No treats? He is a champ. I would not have survived testing BK without a healthy supply of “kitty crack” (freeze dried chicken breast)!

what is your general feeding strategy for the overnights?

Barb and I have offset hours. I get home right around +6 from his PM shot. I'll get a BG reading and give him food if he is interested or the numbers require it. The treats he was getting was definitely HC stuff not great. I can definitely look into making something that will be a reward but not spiking his BG

Wires got crossed. Barb got a +9 and +11.

She will get the PMPS in another 30 mins. She is also gonna stay up way past her bedtime to ensure we get a +4 tonight at the very least and stay up with him until I get home if it is needed

His poor ears...

Nice little Lantus double dip. With the data you gathered today, maybe you can test a bit more strategically next time.

Absolutely. It was a great information day! We are gonna fill the early morning holes this weekend so we can see what happens when we are asleep. Also a couple holes left before the PM shot.

In terms of my poor little man's ears.... How often should I be planning on "refreshing" the data points? Try to keep them current to the week? Or if I keep his diet and dose the same would I be okay testing known dips to ensure I'm in the clear and sprinkle a odd extra test every couple days at a point where I see a lack of recent data?

On the one hand I want to know ALL the information. On the other hand my poor little man's ear and my wallet would both like a reprieve.

Are you putting Polysporin Complete on his ears after testing? That can help the healing.

As for testing times, it's a little early yet to pick out all the patterns in how Jospeh uses the Lantus. Insulin is a hormone, their responses can change over time. But once you figure out his onset, nadir, and duration, that can guide you with when and how often to test. Once he's nadired and on his way up without influence of carbs, you can slow down the testing. Over time, you will also get good data about how he responds to food. I used to put notes on any extra food/carbs in the Remarks section so I could figure out when and how much to feed to keep Neko safe.
Jospeh is also being very considerate and being a rather flatter cat than most newly diagnosed. Flatter means more predictable, as much as you can predict a cat. :cat:

I used to play the game "guess the BG" before I tested, to see if I was learning what to expect. I also spend quite a bit of time before bed, doing what hubby called "reading the tea leaves". or spreadsheet, before bed, to see if she would be safe that night. Patterns in blood sugar happen in waves over several cycles. I could spot clues that told me when I needed extra tests. Well, most of the time. ;)

Jospeh is very predictable. I predict that he will want food. I predict that he will want out after he eats and I predict that he will be sleeping in his throne if the heat is on (the heat vent is under his throne lol). I'll take a picture of it tomorrow. So adorable.

Looking good at the +4. Was a little worried about the lowest preshoot number yet so Barb stayed up super late to guide his surfing. I'll grab a +7 tonight when I'm done work just to verify all is well and grab a new data point.

Thanks for the reminder about the poly. I admit I forgot it completely today!
