Bad day yesterday and it just escalated last night with him not eating. I'll just leave it at that. Got about 4 hours of sleep last night so I don't hold high hopes today will be much better.

Going to give Mirtz and Ondan before I leave today. He ate his b-fast pretty good. Just finishing his canna.

I am not sure what I am going to do if I can't get the vet to listen to me re: kidney infection. I sure wish the gaba would get here soon.

I spoke with the vet (wife) and she agrees that it could be a kidney infection and putting Gizmo back on AB couldn’t hurt. I already have them – but he didn’t tolerate them well last time. I am still going to try again. I want to make sure that I do everything possible to be successful.

    The AB is Veraflox
    https://felinecrf.org/treatments_antibiotics_painkillers.htm#pradofloxacin

I am planning on giving the one daily dose of the Veraflox right after his +4.5 PM feeding/snack.

I have these two Pro-biotics – which one (or both) do I give and when?
    Formulas Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS
Animal Essentials Plant Enzyme & Probiotics

She (vet) is willing to prescribe a different AB but the Veraflox is in the fluoroquinolone family (Baytril, Marbocyl, Zeniquin) which Tanya's ckd site lists for kidney infections. The Veraflox I have is oral liquid.

    Any other suggestions?

I have heard that the Jarrow S. Boullardii with MOS is bitter tasting and it's more for diarrhea. The Renew Life Ultimate Flora seems to be a popular one for probiotics that I've seen people use for their cats. I used something made in Canada (Natural Factors Protec) that my vet recommended. Give the probiotics at least two hours apart from the AB.

I'm glad you've got the vet's go ahead to try to treat the kidney infection.

I hope taking this will help Gizmo. If you are using a p-binder in his +4.5 snack, you will also want to take timing into account for best results. From the package insert:
Compounds (e.g., sucralfate, antacids and multivitamins) containing divalent and trivalent cations (e.g., iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and zinc) may substantially interfere with the absorption of quinolones resulting in a decrease in product bioavailability. Therefore, the concomitant oral administration of quinolones with foods, supplements, or other preparations containing these compounds should be avoided.

Rose is taking ABs, Probiotic, and p-binders containing Aluminum and Calcium long term, so we are using the same 2-hour rule Wendy mentioned to avoid interaction problems across all 3.

Yeah! I am so glad you got heard by the vet.

If you get the Florastor brand ( CVS) it is S. Boullardii and has no taste unlike the Jarrow. It is pricy but, in my opinion well worth it. You can get it cheaper on Amazon but you need it now. I have the same bottle I bought over a year ago. Bubba does not detect it in his food.

One great thing about using S. Boulardii is that it CAN be giving at the same time as ABs unlike other probiotics. Trying to find my source. I think it was on Foodfurlife website but I am having trouble finding it. I just emailed them. To be continued..............

The following is not my original source ( I still believe it was sited on Foodfurlife) but was found online along with multiple links that support that the AB and S. Bourlarddii can be taken together which to me is a win.

    S. boulardii cannot be killed by antibiotics
As new research emerges about the importance of the health of our gut to our overall health, more and more people look for ways to guard against damage to their intestinal flora when they are forced to take a course of antibiotics. While it may still be worthwhile to take some bacteria based probiotics during a course of antibiotics, the antibiotics will kill the good with the bad, eliminating much of the value in a traditional probiotic. By contrast, S. boulardii is a yeast microbe, and as such, is immune to antibiotics. Antibiotics do not kill S. boulardii and S. boulardii can even be taken at the exact same time as a course of antibiotics. (R)

Just heard back from Foodfurlife.com. Here is how they responded to my question as to whether the S. Bouilarrdi can be given at the same time as an AB.

    Hi Bobbie,
S boulardii is a yeast, so antibiotics don't affect it. That's why it is used for antibiotic-associated diarrhea in so many hospitals! You can give it any time, even at the same time as the antibiotic.

Oh yay! How much do you give? Should I give it both AM & PM cycles? Just mix it with his food or transfer to another capsule?

I guess i am confused because I thought S. Boullardii was a probiotic. I know I have given it once for about 3 days. I know it was for diarrhea, I don't remember if it was from AB or a food change. I do remember it worked!

If you are giving as a maintanence dose, then I would give 1/4 capsule twice a day, right into the food. If he were to develop diarrhea from the AB then bump it up to a therapeutic dose of 1/2 capsule twice a day.

Jarrow, is just another brand of S. Boularrdii that has MOS in in which is bitter. Jarrow is a lot cheaper than the Florastor but I think to be able to put it right into the food undetected as you can with Florastor, is a lot easier than pilling the kitties so I will gladly pay more for the Florastor brand. When I start to run out, I will order on Amazon to get Florastor cheaper. You know how we Scots are! LOL!

I have personally been a staunch believer in PRObiotics and avoid ANTIbiotic if all possible. If you do use the antibiotics and probiotics at same time you are negating their benefit. The antibiotics overrule and negate any good that probiotics are.
You might want to, unless you already have ;), google difference between PRO and ANTI biotics or better yet “using antibiotics at the same time using probiotics”… Something to that effect.
Bio-k (https://www.biokplus.com/en_us) is the best, purest bang for your buc. The liquid acts faster (obviously) than the capsules- comes in a small little container, refrigerated. Any probiotic that is sold not refrigerated loses a tremendous amount of its suspected potency… Buyer beware :woot:

Hubby looked at grocery store for the Florastor with no luck. @Bobbie And Bubba is it only at CVS? I swear I saw it at Walmart (I was checking for someone here a while back and was already going and told the I would look) but I don't remember for sure.

I got mine at CVS and really haven't paid attention to where else other than on line you can get it.

However, the Foodfurlife.com says a comparable one at Walmart called Equate. See below for their site.

Walmart has a store brand very similar to Florastor, called Equate but without the lactose. Renew Life, carried by most Whole Foods stores, has two S boulardii products, one with larch arabinogalactan. Buy the one WITHOUT this ingredient. There are many brands of S boulardii available online: anything with just plan S boulardii in capsules of 3 billion CFU to 5 billion CFU will do.
