Looks like Mowgli’s headed for the moon today. Lame. :rolleyes: Hopefully he’s back to lower numbers tonight.

I’m headed back to work this week about 7lbs heavier so that’s nice. Thanksgiving was great though because: food

Nyx has her vet appointment this week (18th) so I’m going to call and follow up. One of my coworkers recently told me they don’t have an X-ray at my vet which I feel like you might need to confirm arthritis... does anyone know? I’m going to call anyway and ask. I will be annoyed if they don’t because I specifically told them the appointment was for a suspicion of arthritis and we’ve been waiting for a month to get in.

X-Ray is needed to confirm arthritis. However, if there is very minimal cartilage wear & tear, it may not be apparent even on X-ray. Oftentimes, people & pets will have clinical symptoms before it shows up on X-ray. MRI does a better job looking at cartilage issues.

A few months ago, Frasier had a slight limp & had x-rays. He has a significant amount of arthritis in his elbows & some in his shoulders. We purchased some ramps to prevent him from putting all the weight through those joints when jumping down from a few places & just making that simple activity modification has resulted in him no longer limping.

Good that you're calling the vet to find out about the x-rays for Nyx. Also you'll know for any future dentals.

That’s what I thought. I think it would be impossible to put ramps everywhere Nyx likes to go but there are definitely a few typical areas. I do things like leave chairs pulled out so she doesn’t have as far to go when she jumps down from the table and things like that ( can’t keep her off counters and tables we’ve accepted it :P)

I’ll call the vet today and see what they say, I can pretty well guarantee there isn’t a place to get a pet MRI in town thanks for your help Amy!

I agree with Amy. An x-ray tells a lot of the story about arthritis. I recall my first x-rays of my feet...turned out a lot of my foot pain was due to arthritis in both feet! I thought it was plantar fascitis...which was also a factor...but the arthritis is predominant..who knew? I hope you can find a vet with an x-ray machine...if you opt for an MRI it'll be very expensive...I'd start with a simple x-ray first...

I hope Mowg's can get back down from that moonshot soon...tell him that's no place for a pretty kitty to hang out. We need him on the beach :)
 
No need for an MRI :).....I just wanted to let you know that early stage cartilage damage often does not show up on x-ray. There has to be enough for the joint space to narrow. It is not even uncommon for the grade (severity) to be underestimated on MRIs. The leading centers in the U.S. actually use techniques such as T2 Mapping & dGemeric in order to determine the health of the remaining cartilage (in people, not sure if they have used this with pets yet)--more often for larger joint preserving procedures. They want to make sure they do not put you through an invasive preservation procedure only to have to replace a joint 1-2 years later. Probably more than you wanted to know but if the x-rays are read as "normal", the joint may still not be normal.

Hopefully it isn’t arthritis at all. But I’m fairly convinced it is... poor nyxie. She is much better since we started her on a joint supplement though!! Not as cranky for sure.

That is great! I am trying to pay attention to Frasier with respect to his activity level...which is VERY hard with a cat who is SO laid back & loves to chill. I want to make sure he is not in pain. He is stoic & hides things well so he is a much tougher read than T.

Thought my Tripper had arthritis in her shoulder. Although she does have some, turns out to be luxating knee is more of the problem. She is on gab now and has no problem climbing the stairs.
 
The vet DOES have an X-ray thankfully!

I’m using Aventi Joint Formula along with Aventi Omega 3 complete at the recommendation of my vet as it takes a long time to get into one of the vets in my town and the vet said if she doesn’t have arthritis it wouldn’t hurt her to take them and if she does have it they should help out with the pain until she can be seen. Actually I’ve been giving it to Mowgli and Nyx as I didn’t think it would hurt and they basically eat out of each other’s food dishes anyway.

hahah it totally looks like Mowg got into some pie. I just don’t know what is up with these numbers! Could be a bounce from the other night but it’s not like Mowg to hold on to bounces like this.

luxating knee.. I’ll have to look that one up :). Nyx is getting around fairly normally she just lumps a lot. She also had gotten so cranky that even I couldn’t cuddle her or pick her up. I’ve noticed a huge change in her attitude since starting on the joint formula and omega 3s so I hope that is helping out a lot. She has been SOOO pleasant and cuddly lately so it’s a relief.

I’m glad I had taken a video of her limp before as it’s not as pronounced as it once was.

Thanks Amy! I feel so bad for Nyx, she got so cranky at the same time as when Mowgli moved in so I really thought her personality change was because of that, but then when she started limping it clicked that something else was probably wrong. I hope we can figure out everything for her.

I would have been really surprised at a vet that does not have xrays. It is used as a diagnostic tool for many conditions. Neko never had xrays per say for arthritis, it was very evident to touch. Even I could tell. :( Elbows, knees, spine, hips. Plus it’s an acro thing. I did see some of her shoulder arthritis in the background of a dental X-ray.

Mowgli, pink has no place on your SS. That’s a LOT of flat yellow.;)

yes I know! I was surprised when my friend said that, but a few years ago her dog swallowed something and they had to send her to a different vet because they didn’t have any X-ray capability. They must have gotten them since then because they confirmed they have the capability now. Ever since Sue brought it up as a possibility I am also like 98% sure poor Nyx has arthritis after looking up the symptoms. But I’m following your advice and got her some heat reflecting beds, joint supplements and omega 3s. I notice a major difference in her since putting those things in place. Doesn’t hurt to have a check up though ;)

a LOT of yellows! I’m on high alert tonight ;) I wouldn’t mind lower numbers but let’s hope Mowgli doesn’t do anything drastic :P
 
WOW! You had a late night!

I was reading thru your condo...and just wanted to say arthritis isn't always an affliction for the geriatric set...:smuggrin: However, since I'm a member of the geriatric set and so is Miss Luci we all have arthritis in this household. I'm keenly aware of it myself because of the pain - and the way I move. However with Luci I noticed it first when she started taking the stairs going down more slowly as she aged. She also lays down and splays one of her rear legs kinda odd...and I think it's due to stiffness in that hip joint...I don't press or push her on that joint as I'm sure it would hurt her...it's just kinda how I'd do it to try to find a comfortable position ...

I have arthritis in my hips and tend to not want to lay on one side for long sometimes when it's hurting...I think you're too young to know about all this stuff:p...but possibly Nyx has a touch of the ole arthritis...and you're already doing the things that help the most - heat and supplements - really can help prevent it from getting any worse. And it'll help with the inflammation/pain. You're a great mama bean to those furbabies! They're so lucky to have you in their lives!:bighug::bighug:
