10/8 Radar bounced on Sunday - After 2 doses of Cerenia he's feeling much better

I haven't posted in at least a week... Radar is bouncing today due to a too quick drop last night. He's been bouncing a lot lately and I think it's related to his frequent inability to eat. Yesterday began with very little eating and the subtle signs of nausea. So I called and made an appointment with the vet. The vet examined Radar and said that he doesn't see or feel anything to be concerned about. He gave me a new script for Ondansetron and told me to try giving just 1/8 tablet of Mirtazapine every day instead of 1/4 every 3 days. He also gave Radar fluids and a shot of Cerenia. Last night Radar was willing to eat his supper normally. :):cat: Thank goodness.

The vet also gave me Cerenia in tablet form to give him. I'm supposed to give the Cerenia to him today but on the box it says "for oral use in dogs only"so now I don't know if it's ok to give this to Radar and since it's Sunday I can't call the vet's office and make sure... :arghh: This is a new RX for us so I'm reluctant to give it without knowing for sure that there hasn't been a mistake of some sort.

Radar has eaten a little so far today but it will be a day of constant coaxing and hoping he will eat a bit more... c'mon just one more bite little one.
 
My package says for dogs. 16mg tablets that get cut into 4. 4 tabs to a box.

My vet gave me 2mg mirtazapine for use every second day. That has really worked with Jones with a lot less cookoo meow behavior. It has to be compounded though. He eats really well...consistent over the two days.
 
Mirtazepine causes some kitties to get a bit agitated. An alternative appetite stimulant is cyproheptadine.

Cerenia is used for both cats and dogs. I think the dose is usually 0.5 - 1mg/kg in cats.

That is what mine is also. Same size pill, same dose.

I think every kitty is different. Gimzo does well on Mirtz but does have a bit of meowing and agitation but with the Cypro - oh, NO!! He was completely out of it on it. I was actually kinda scared - real wobbly and completely doped up. If I hadn't been so scared it would have been funny (almost).

My box also says 16 mg, but Radar's dose is one full tablet once a day. It may be a bit challenging to get the whole thing into the size 4 gel cap we have so I'm thinking I'll need to order the next bigger size if pilling is going to be a once a day thing now. I'm just so relieved that I probably didn't get the wrong medicine and can give him a dose tonight so his tummy doesn't hurt and he can eat better while I'm away at work. :cat:

Radar has been taking Mirtaz on and off for a couple of years and he's not had an episode of crazy kitty except when the pill was from an expired bottle. Once I got new pills he didn't have that extreme reaction.

:bighug::bighug::bighug: Thank you so much for this very useful information. I feel so much better about giving him his first dose tonight. :joyful:

I'm so glad to hear that your kitty is doing well on the mirtaz and is eating consistently. That is what I'm hoping for...
 
The latest research show that mirtazepine lasts doesn't last a full day in the cat. Daily dosing is recommended. If you get it in the transdermal form, it's absorbed more slowly and less like to cause the side effects.

The Cerenia dosing guidelines I have seen are 1mg/lb. At one point, Neko needed both Cerenia and ondansetron.
 
My vet did offer 1 mg every day dose. Was going to talk to her about it. I think the compounded pills have a sugar coating - so definitely going ask about the transdermal. I am back to cyproheptadine now as I am out of the 2 mg ones, only got enough to cover 10 days as a test to see how he did.

Cypro works, just not as intense as the mirtazepine. ECID though. Would just like to get him off of the appy stims all together but when off, he doesn't even eat 1/2 his required calorie intake. :(
 
I'm delighted to report that the Cerenia has made Radar feel significantly better. He ate last night and today without coaxing!!! He also ate a good amount of dinner tonight and asked for seconds. :woot: I am soooo relieved that the vet visit on Saturday has brought some great results for my little guy without spending big wads of $$.

Now we just need to see what consistent eating will do to help his numbers improve.

Fingers crossed that it continues!! Great news.
