Hey everyone. Moe’s not feeling so great right now. He did come around looking for breakfast when I didn’t get up in time, but wasn’t interested in eating a lot when I gave him his bowl. He did finally eat about a half ounce, so I gave him his shot, 1.5 unit.

I took him to the vet yesterday after finding blood in his stool. Vet is testing for pancreatitis and UTI. In the meantime, we have started cerenia once a day for nausea and metronidazole flagyl twice a day for diarrhea. Moe is not a great pill-taker, so this won’t be fun. I should have results today for the UTI and tomorrow for the pancreatitis.

On a positive note, I was able to test for ketones this morning. He was a bit alarmed when I took the lid off the box while he was stepping in, poor guy. The result didn’t exactly match anything on the scale, but it looked closest to negative.

Great job on the ketone test. Please test daily.
Good luck with the pills.

One of my kitties has some serious liver issue going on requiring 5 pills each 24 hours for the last month. FWIW what is working for me with him is to place the pill in a pill pocket and give it a good dusting of fortiflora. I put it on the counter and he practically inhales it.

Moe has trouble with pill pockets. They are too big and chewy for his mouth to handle. He has a hard time eating in general, always has. I found a pill shooter that I’ve used in the past with another cat. Slathered the tip with butter and it went better this morning.

Does Moe have teeth problems? That can make it a lot harder to regulate.
He’s overdue for a dental. At his last physical on 7th February, vet looked and said he’s got tartar and possibly FORLS. I have a dental scheduled for 3/27 but not sure if it will happen. Vet wants him “controlled” before she does surgery.

485 at +10. Moe’s eating a little snack, a little less than an ounce of Friskies. His appetite has improved over this morning.

Feeding after nadir can shorten duration, and cause preshots to jump up. If you have to feed late in the cycle, try zero carb snacks or very low carb. Good to hear his appetite is improving.

This is tricky. I have seven (!!) cats that start begging for food if I am anywhere near the kitchen after about 2:00 pm. What foods would be considered very low carb? I am feeding Friskies pate and he only gets about a tablespoon at +10.

Just spoke to the vet and Moe's pancreatitis test came back normal. Also no UTI (and no ketones in his analysis). Which is all good news, but doesn't explain the loose stools. She wants to postpone the dental for now, which I'm okay with, especially with the coronavirus and all it's accompanying mess.

She chided me a bit for increasing his dosage too fast, wants to see a full curve before I make dosing changes without her knowledge. So I'll keep him at 1.5 through the weekend, do a curve, and send her the spreadsheet on Sunday.

The vet wants to keep him in such high numbers? That's not good for him. Tomorrow you could increase to 2.0 units and still be safe. Keep testing as often as you can for ketones. If anything shows up beyond negative, ignore the vet and increase, for Moe's sake.

Good news on the test results, that just means there is no other cause for high numbers and he needs more juice.

I think it’s more an issue that she doesn’t know what’s happening, and thinks I’m increasing too fast. Since we had a fur shot on day one at 1.5, I’m going to wait and increase to 2.0 on 3/21. So one more day at 1.5.
