If you have a Walmart nearby, you can buy them there. Just to let you know if you do, a lot of the Walmart staff don't know they have syringes with 1/2 unit marks, for some reason, but they do.

I hope Rusty comes down nice a easy today.

If you do the Walmart... You'll have to have the Vet you're using call or fax your prescription. At least the one near me requires it -- wouldn't take my paper one. (Then again, NH has a drug issue and everyone is super cautious with needles.)

I think its so awesome that you're working to get him regulated for adoption! Its a lot of work, but I'm sure Rusty appreciates it :)

No Walmart nearby unfortunately, I'll have to order online :(

Also, I was hoping for a bit of a drop today...still bouncing?

Yes, still bouncing. They can take up to 6 cycles to clear and this is Rusty's third - or maybe 4th if he was bouncing overnight after his lime green in the afternoon.

I hope those syringes show up today. It does make dosing easier.

Hey Rusty - enough red already, time to work your way back down.

It makes me nervous with all this red. :( Although he's acting and eating fine. I plan to test for ketones today just to further ease my mind.

Unfortunately I can't even order until today because they require a vet's prescription...and our regular vet isn't in over the weekend. Or at least I assumed they would require a prescription?

However, I found these and it doesn't look like a prescription is required? Maybe I'm just not seeing it. Would these work okay? https://www.adwdiabetes.com/product/monoject-ultra-comfort-insulin-syringes_2552_88.htm

Hi Mandi,
All you can do is keep a close eye on him and do urine ketone testing. You can't alter the dose based on a bounce number. Unfortunately, you need to see how low a Lantus dose takes him to judge it. You need to wait out the bounce for that. If it continues beyond 6 cycles, then you might have to tweak the dose. Bouncing is a pain because it obscures the picture and creates the need for a lot of dosing guesswork.

Another 400+ :( I just hope he's not going low overnight and then bouncing the next day. Could that be what's happening? I wish I could bring him home! Also, is there anything you don't like about these 1/2 unit syringes just by looking at the description? https://www.adwdiabetes.com/product/monoject-ultra-comfort-insulin-syringes_2552_88.htm

Those syringes are fine, Mandi. In Rusty's situation you can't know if he's going lower at night so you'll have to use the daytime BGs to make dosing decisions. Let's see what his AMPS is tomorrow. Once you have those syringes you can eyeball 4.75 u if that's what he needs.

Syringes officially ordered. Thanks for the reassurance. :) He seems to like being in these high numbers, literally. He wants to play and be super active. I'd expect him to feel lousy...

I know what you mean. Sometimes Teasel will be running around with his sibs looking very perky and when I test his BG it's pink ...

And we are into the blacks! :(

I just opened a new bottle of Alpha Trak test strips and noticed that the cat code on the side of the bottle is different from the previous bottle (same brand). I wasn't expecting that. I thought the code would always be the same. Instead of 38 it was 8. So every bottle will have a different code?

Try testing the strip on yourself and looking at it in the same light, if you can. I know that sounds hard at work o_O
If he doesn't have any heart problems, then giving some extra fluids and/or adding extra water to his food will help.

Yeah, I've done the self test before and it was for sure weird! lol, However, it's definitely trace :(

Unfortunately, they can go from trace to way more in a matter of hours. Is he eating okay? I would give him as much wet food as he will eat.
I'm praying for Rusty to be okay, and to shed those ketones. Food, water, insulin. He should be clearing his bounce any time now, too.

He's only about a week post DKA so unfortunately I learned that all too well :( So far his behavior hasn't changed and he's still eating, although he's ignoring his wet food and searching for the dry. As far as fluids go. What's the best time to give them with regard to insulin. His PMPS is due in about 2 1/2 hours. @Kris & Teasel Can you weigh in at all?

Some cats go lower with fluids on board, some not. I found if I did fluids a couple hours away from the shot, and in a different location, then Neko's numbers didn't change. So if you do fluids in the scruff, try giving insulin in the flank tonight. Are you adding a bit of water to the wet food?

These are the syringes my Rusty is using now. I order all of his supplies from ADW; they are very prompt. Whether or not you need a prescription depends on what state you live in. If you order from ADW and it turns out that you need a prescription, they will call you right away and tell you. You can then have your vet phone it in. You only need to do this once. The next time you order, just put "vet's prescription on file" in the "comments" box.

I don't have experience with fluids.
Keep on testing for ketones. If you get more than "trace", you have to go to the vet.

You are doing a great job with Rusty. I know how frustrating it can be when those numbers stay high. Hang in there!

I added water to his wet food and he sat and lapped it up for about a minute or so. Hopefully with fluids on board I can get another ketone test before I leave for the night. I'm assuming this won't change his dosing for the night?

He's still bouncing and the higher dose takes him too low, so I would stick with this dose. Tomorrow will be cycle six on this dose so the bounce should fade and let us see how this dose works. At some point we may have to go up to 4.75 units, but I'm not sure how you'd do that until the new syringes arrive.

Ok, I'll sit on my hands. :) Fluids are in as of 45 min. ago. He's acting just fine. I'll try to get the insulin in the flank although when I pinched the skin back there he was not a fan, lol. If I give it in the scruff about an hour after fluids does that make it not work as well?

Also, what in the world are calipers? I keep reading about people using them to help with fractional doses.

Just seeing this now. I have no experience giving fluids so can't advise.

Calipers are digital calipers and can be used to consistently dose on syringes with wonky markings or to help you find those in between doses. I found it a useful tool to have another person (my husband) give the shots cause he would then draw the exact same dose as I did. Here is a post on dosing with calipers. If you haven't seen it already, another useful post called Where Can I Find contains links to a number of useful posts people have done.

You can also shoot in the side behind the shoulders and down a bit. That might be less objectionable.

No, there are maybe half a dozen or so different codes so you'll run into the same ones repeatedly.

We are in the pink! Too bad this night time cycle is probably going to be the first non-bouncy one in a while and I won't be able to see it. :arghh: I'll be sure to leave enough food for him to munch on.

I think that's what I'll do.

Gotcha, thanks :)

Oh I'm glad to hear that you've had experience with them. They didn't ask for RX info or docter/vet info and I didn't get a call so I'm guessing I'm good! Seemed like a great price too!

Also, I need to start referring to my guy as Rusty #2! lol
