Good Morning LL! Sorry we have not posted in a while. Ann has been busy getting ready for the annual California Bonsai Society show at the Huntington Library and Gardens in San Morino this weekend. She left for LA yesterday afternoon, and is setting up the show today.

We have been using R as a bolus since Tess went DKA three weeks ago. Still learning what the correct dose and when to give it are. It looked like Tess had more ketones on Sunday morning, so took her into the ER that morning, and got a very knowledgable vet. She treated by giving a bowl of chicken and sending us home. She said as long as Tess was eating, the insulin would bring down the ketones. We got another sample when we got home and ketones were negative to a trace. She also said that the UTI last week was very likely idiopathic cystitis brought on by stress from the US last Tuesday. She said one of her patients would get it if furniture was moved around just a little. That's good to know because there didn't seem to be an infection.

It looked like Tess got over her NDW on Wednesday, then of course, proceeded to go on a bounce yesterday. She got some lower numbers last night, but looks like the bounce continues today.

We have been feeding Hills Science Diet WD for the last week, to get her to eat. It's way too high in carbs, so have been mixing it with Nulo. A mix of 30% WD and 70% Nulo seems yield reasonable numbers, and she still eats it fine. Ann got a case of Iams veterinary formula, and Tess loves it.

WCR All 5 Ps this morning, and Clean Plate Club in about 5 minutes. She is taking advantage of my lap for a morning nap. Hugs to all the beans and kittehs!

John

I missed you guys and was wondering how miss Tess was doing. :bighug: Bummer on another ketones event but great that you got such a knowledgeable ER vet. Nothing like a bowl of chicken soup to fix things up. :)

My civie has idiopathic cystitis. Since his last episode (1.5 years, antijinx) I've kept some Feliway plug-ins going all the time in the areas he most commonly frequents. Plus extra water on his food since he's not a drinker. And he gets daily Cosequin as there is some thought that the glucosamine helps the bladder wall. After his last episode, he also had a series of 4 weekly Cartrophen shots (Adequan is the US equivalent). Here is a published paper that discusses it's use for cystitis in cats.

Keep on eating Tess!

Hi John (and Ann at the Bonsai show),

We've been wondering about what was going on with Tess, also, and are relieved to hear that you have her issues under control. More vines are on the way.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Yo Tess, you need more chicken soup? I'll be along later.

glad to see a Tess condo today and hear everything is pretty much ok.

We also gave punkin cosequin to help the lining of his bladder and I do think it worked. He'd had at least one bladder infection (which may not have been an infection but may have been sterile, i don't know) per year for probably 8 years and none after he became diabetic. Whether it was the added water or the cosequin, who knows, but for what it's worth, i'll pass on the experience.

I was getting worried about you guys! I'm glad you are doing well and getting some good info about what is going on with Tess, even though it involved a visit to the ER. Trix has started having "issues" after vetty visits, too....she just goes down and does not feel well at all a few days later. As a result, my vet agreed that we won't take her in unless we absolutely have to.

Have a great evening, guys!

I was also getting so worried but secretly stalking Tess's SS---so glad to see you posting again!!! :bighug::bighug::bighug: And relieved to hear that you have everything under control and that she is eating! People knock prescription food, but honestly, when Tiger was hospitalized all 3 times, prescription food was what she would eat and we were relieved that she ate anything! When she had her pancreatitis attack, Purina EN was what she would eat(not diabetic friendly!) but I gradually mixed it with her Wellness and it worked out okay. Continuing healing vines and appy vines for your little girl and hugs for the both of you beans! Great job!

Thanks everyone for your concerns. Tess is doing fine, but not too sure about the beans. She had a bad bounce yesterday, but came down to some good numbers last night and this morning. I did have to use a little R this morning and again tonight. I think I got the dose right, cause some green this morning, and coming down from what looked like a bounce this evening. Tess says that the prescription food is good, but the grilled chicken DH had for dinner is better!

We use cosequin and have tried cranberry supplements also. I think it helps, but her ultrasound and cardio took almost an hour and that much poking and prodding was just too much for her. Usually a little bupe will settle her down, but this time it took more than usual, and she wasn't comfortable for at least a couple of days.

Poor little Tess. So sorry about the DKA episode, but hurrah for a savvy vet! :woot:

Sounds like you are being a wonderful, if stressed, BIC, John. I hope Ann is enjoying her bonsai show and not worrying too much.

Sending lots of healing and appy vines for Miss Tess, and :bighug: for the beans.

I heard from a bean with idiopathic cystitis that cranberry can be painful. I stopped giving it after that. Theo's vetty (also Neko's acupuncture vetty) mentioned some other herbals yesterday - but I didn't write them down. I'll try to remember to ask in a couple weeks when I see her again.

Hi John, and Ann :coffee::coffee::coffee:

What a relief that all is well there. I finally bookmarked her SS, just for peace of mind. :) I am continually impressed and amazed at how well you know her and are able to treat all that she is going through. Kudos! It is also so great to get an ER vet that is in the know, and understands FD. That was great to read.

I so remember the stress of dealing with multiple health issues... hugs and vines for you both. You have done wonderfully with her. I am sorry that the stress of dealing with the US was hard for her. Poor Tess. Many feel better vines for her.

Have a great weekend. I hope it is a peaceful one.
