Woke up this a.m. to a skiff of snow on the ground, low temperatures and an email that today`s hike is cancelled. I couldn`t have gone anyway with Lulu starting off green, she`s started off yellow since her decrease, so I want to keep an eye on her.
I thought she had swallowed her pill last night, but the little monkey held it in her mouth til Mama wasn`t looking, then spit it out. I`ve been laying tons of love on her and we`re both in better moods today.

Have a fantastic Friday everyone.

Nice to hear everyone is in a good mood!! :):cat:

Snow?! How nice....I can't even imagine! We are already roasting this morning.

Nice start to the day for Lulu :D

Elizabeth is so easy with shots and ear pricks, ...but pills are hell! :blackeye: I always find them later!

Wait 5 minutes and the weather can change in Calgary, could be in the 20`s Celsius in a couple of hours:confused:

I started putting polysporin on Lulu`s ears yesterday to try to help with healing and pain. Since then, I have wasted about 8 strips (3 just now when trying to get a +2), the blood just seems to spread out rather than bead up. Not enough blood on test strip = Error msg. So...I`m getting up the nerve to poke her paw pad:eek: I watched the video but I know Lulu will not be as calm as that kitty. I need to test her soon, as her AMPS was lower than usual.

Nice start for Lulu today. Have you tried wiping her ear off? I've had that problem if I put too much Neosporin on Furball's ear. I try to put just a small dab and wipe any extra off. We're going to hit 90F today. I'd rather have your snow. I hate hot weather.

:bighug:Thanks, Carla, I just tried poking the paw pad -- no dice, didn't get enough blood so error msg on meter. Tried again, same thing. Now she's getting mad :mad:Tried the ears again, same thing. Good thing was she did swallow her pill, took two tries. I'll wipe her ears off, and try again in an hour. Sheesh, I feel like I'm back to mid March again, starting all over.
Snow's all melted now, just an overcast sky with chance of rain. We seldom get unbearably hot weather here, being in the foothills of the mountains, summer nights are cool, very little humidity.

My Rosa does that too - she was on antibiotics for about 3 months when she had the oxalate stones because the vet I was with at the time thought it was just an infection. To begin with, she was bad for spitting the pills out, then I thought she'd got past it and was swallowing them...until it got to the weekend and I vacuumed and found them all pushed under the couch. She'd learned that if I saw her spit the pill out, I'd make her take it so she learned to hide them! :arghh:

Nice start for Lulu today. :D Paws crossed she can stay green for a lot of the day! :D

Thanks April :bighug:
Cats are SO smart, that little rascal Rosa. :cat:
I called the vet to see if this medication comes in liquid form -- it does, but the taste is so awful that it can cause foaming at the mouth. That`s all we need, so we`ll persevere with the pills.
Success at last with getting a BG sample. I was bound and determined -- so it took a few pokes, both Lulu and I got poked, lol, blood all over the Kleenex (mine), but got enough of a kitty sample for this stupid meter to produce a reading. She`s still green, paws crossed!
I think I`ll check out the Bayer meter, apparently if you don`t get enough blood, you can use the same strip to test again. I`m spending a lot of $$$ on test strips that get wasted.

They're too smart for their own good sometimes - if they'd just realize we don't give them pills to be mean, we do it to make them feel better!

I try to avoid liquid medication - I've used it for them when there's been no other option, but I've always found they tend to let it trickle out of the side of their mouth so I just finish up covered in it and they only get a tiny bit of the dose. :P

Lulu's looking really great today! :D I wouldn't be surprised if she took another attempt at that reduction she almost earned on the 5th in the next few days (anti-jinx)! :D :D

I wish I'd known about the Bayer meter and those strips you can take a second attempt with when I was testing frequently...those E-7 errors on the ReliOn that waste the strip when it looked like there should have been just enough blood are so frustrating - and expensive!!

I should have gotten the Bayer meter in the first place when I picked up the Accu-chek at Costco. The pharmacist mentioned that the Bayer strips allow a second attempt, but I wasn`t aware if they had a promotion on those. When I got the Accu-chek, it was free meter, 100 free lancets, with the purchase of 100 strips.
I checked on Bayer Diabetes`s website just now and it is offering a free meter and 10 free strips, so I signed up for one. This was on Bayer`s Canada site (.ca), and said will ship only to Canadian addresses, I haven`t checked their .com site to see if they have the same offer for our American friends. Also, I see that the test strips price is comparable to Accu-chek, so I`ll save a bundle with all the strips I waste:woot:

What a pretty cycle today for Lulu!:D Does she like eating a piece of pill pocket by itself, without meds in it? I try to condition my cats that it's a treat before hiding a med in it.

Are you using the Polysporin Complete (black and gold package)? I put a dab on after the poke then wipe it off before poking again. Actually I alternate ears to the dry one with each poke which makes it easier.

Yup, the election really caused a freeze over in Alberta this week.;) But I hear you on the weather change, especially since it's May.

That's an awesome offer - and one I'll look into for the US in case Rosa needs more frequent testing again in the future. At the moment, of course, I've still got almost a full box of ReliOn strips so I guess I'll just use those up first as they're only good for 6 months now they're open. Those wasted strips do get expensive - at one point I was going through about 70 or 80 strips a week, so it only took one in every 10 or 20 to be wasted and it started getting annoyingly expensive for getting no result!

@Wendy&Neko , I wish I had done that with the pill pockets to start with. Her first exposure to the pill pockets, I ended up stuffing the pill down her throat with the smell of the duck treat on it. So looks like she's associating this treat with an unpleasant experience. I'm going to try using them, along with the Wild Boar treat, as a reward for BG tests and injections - two treats, hope she falls for it.
I did get the polysporin complete...I recall reading about it on one of your posts. But what I did was smear it over both ears, thinking she had two sore ears from all the poking. Duh. I'm going to wash her ears with soap and water to try to get all the ointment off, and then do as you suggest, just putting a dab and then wiping it off after the poke.

@manxcat419 - April, I bought 100 strips on April 28, and have maybe 35 left. Crazy how costly the strips are, that must be why these companies are happily giving away meters--they make big $$ on the strips.

Interesting - the Bayer site does show free meters being available for the US, but only if you take the printable coupon to a pharmacy with a doctor's prescription. I'll have to look into whether they'd accept that with a vet prescription instead (or get hold of a prescription for one for my diabetic step-son ;)).

I agree - Walmart almost always have an offer on the ReliOn meters here...buy 100 strips and get the meter free. Of course the meter is only about $16 and then they've got you for the strips on a weekly basis at close to $40 for 100...it really is no wonder they give the meters away free!!

It's more profitable for companies to allow beans to take advantage of these promotions...or at least members of FDMB :p, I don't think anyone tests more than we do on our furbabies. (My vet recommended testing once a day...uhmmm....nope!)
P.S. Up here, it's costing me about $76 for 100 strips of Accu-chek.

Ouch - and I thought I had it bad with the ReliOn strips!! $76 is a crazy price! And I agree completely - I doubt anyone tests the way we do here. Even human diabetics are often told a maximum of 5 times a day is enough - at that rate, 100 strips would last almost a month instead of a week or two (and we can't even use insurance to help with the cost for our kitties).

$76 is a good price. When we started out, prices were more like $85 and $76 was a sale price, at least in British Columbia. That's why I started cross border shopping for strips. Doesn't hurt that the Relion/Arkray use a smaller blood drop. Fortunately there is a slightly lower cost on line option with the Bravo strips now.

As for the pill pockets, you could try one of the other flavours, but they are a little higher carb. Since it's only a little amount it might not be too bad.

Another wasted strip, error msg, so I gave Lulu her shot without a test, I`ll get one in a while. I just can`t put her through 3 or 4 or more pokes every time I try do a test. I did wash her ears trying to get the ointment off, but the blood is still spreading through her fur, unable to get enough for a test before the thing errors out.

You might try only putting on the polysporin at bedtime after you're done poking her for the day, then wiping off any remaining before you poke in the morning. That's what I did and it basically healed punkin's ear overnight and we started out fresh every morning. I rarely put it on during the day.

Replying to my own post, only to say that I received the free Bayer meter and strips within a week!! That's great customer service, request filled, sent by mail and received in 7 days. I still have 100 Accu-chek strips left, so probably won't start trying out the Bayer until those are gone.
