Well, the cool cucumber, Coral is at 43 (816AM). Could it be that she just likes this cool Oregon Coast and it is reflected in her BG? Crossed paws and fingers that the day goes well. Getting ready to feed. For safety sake how long after food should I test?

Last night she did go down to 46 and I gave her 1/8 tsp Karo and a little food. Her BG at +2 (1046PM) was 134.

Thanks for your reply, Anne. I just tested her and she is at 53, not an unusual number of late for Coral.
 
Now that you're not giving insulin, getting blood glucose tests in the 40's doesn't have the same problems as when you were giving insulin

We generally say "No insulin? No hypo!!"

Normal, non-diabetic cats can routinely run in the 40's, so it's not necessary to give Karo or high carb. My two civvies usually run in the 44-46 range. The 40's are safe numbers but when we're shooting, they're kind of the "last line in the sand" because we sure don't want them going any lower!

I generally pop on and off the board during the day -- I'm at work.

If I had a 43 at pre-shot during an OTJ trial, I'd have fed and then re-tested in an hour. Some cats do seem to have a lower baseline. You can always feed some LC to see if that brings the numbers up. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you see numbers going even lower or Coral is acting oddly.

What an amazing day. Out in the garden with the girls. Played paper balls with the girls careening and slipping on the floor. DH and I spent some time in town. Planted a cat grass for the girls. Took an amazing walk around sunset with the girls and watched the sun slip into the Pacific. They both decided to race down the path to the house, tailed raised and both running and trotting together. It doesn't get much better than this! I am so thankful. PMBG 43! Yippeee! One Day at a Time.

I haven't seen such a good picture of her - she is gorgeous. And she looks supremely happy and confident in that photo. Yippee! I'm so glad you've had a great day with her - and congratulations on day 1 of her OTJ trial!

Here are the directions again - and I've highlighted the 2 parts that address what to do with your test results while on the trial.

Start the trial on the next green pre shot.

If he/she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day.

If he/she is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his/her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!

Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. He/she may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.

After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him/her the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!​

Thank you for complimenting Coral. She and Joy were show cats. When they retired the breeder wanted to place them together because they had never been apart. We were looking for a Silver Torbie (Joy) and Coral came as a bonus. We had just lost our Maine Coon wanna be, Mere (French for Mother), calico so we were happy to take on the twosome. We got Mere from the animal shelter in Boise, ID when she was about 6 months old. We had many years together and she went full time RV'ing with us for three years and spent 5 years with us on the coast. She's left her footprints on our hearts. Don't they all make that imprint?
