Up until Fri biscuit was on Novolin and then had a bout of DKA. He just returned from the pet hospital last night . The paperwork says they were going to give him IV insulin but didn’t cause he ate good and gave the 1u instead.
In the hospital they started with 1u. Didn’t like the reduction and gave him 1.5 at next shot. That sent him really low. So they have sent me home with dosing instructions of 1u. As one could expect he is not “himself” today but there are positive signs: He ate all his food this morning. He’s been to the water bowl a lot. I did my first keytone check and it was neg.

I gave his first Lantus shot this morning (he had 2 at er). 1 question. How do you not get that air bubble upon drawback and since your not supposed to get more than needed and put back? I am drawing it from a pen.

I’ll continue to post as day goes on. I could also post pics of his lab work if that’s helpful.

FYI we have two kitties and so sometimes monitoring what one is doing is hard since you don’t know which one it was.

I can’t quite figure out the timing so I’m just going to post er numbers here. If someone can tell me how to enter into spreadsheet I will. But they were obv not with my meter.

So glad that he is home from the pet hospital and eating and drinking good for you, all a good sign.

As far as monitoring for ketones with 2 kitties using the same box, you might want to consider getting a ketone blood meter. It’s so much easier to test the blood than trying to stalk them at the box. The meters are fairly inexpensive but the test strips are pricey. You can get the strips online for less

The air bubbles can be problematic. I draw very very slowly and go down just a tiny bit past the unit I want to draw. Then I flick the syringe to make the bubbles go to the top. Then , I pull down very slowly on the plunger to get a little head space and then very slowly press the plunger back up till I get to the top. Any excess will be expressed out.

He really dropped before you left the hospital! Glad you reduced. We raise and lower the dose in increments of .25 of a unit so we don’t go over the best dose. It might be that you’ll have to raise him to 1.25 eventually. Let’s see how the 1 u of Lantus does for a few cycles.

Very glad Biscuit is home with you, and I bet you are pretty happy too. I am not certain how to tell you to enter the BG numbers from the ER vet but we can tag @Marje and Gracie for help with that. One thing would be good on the spreadsheet, insert a line between the Novolin insulin and the Lantus insulin, to indicate the change of insulins. Just type in Started Lantus or something to the effect.

Very best wishes for Biscuit's DKA recovery. I am so glad it wasn't severe and he seems to be doing well. I think you are going to see great improvement working with the experienced Lantus users. :bighug:

Poor thing :( I'm sure you're glad he's home...and I hope he continues his recovery!

The SS will definitely help us all help you...Lantus is a much better insulin than Novolin - much gentler... :)
