I didn’t do any spot tests throughout the day, one because I worked but I could have gotten a +1 or +11. Lately it’s been harder getting blood from Mimi’s ears.. I feel like I poke her a few times because the first one or two times didn’t work and I need to try again.
I use a lancet pen- I tried just poking with a lancet alone but it seemed to hurt her more and I didn’t feel like I had the control ?

I have the same problem with my cat Thomas J. Sometimes his ears bleed easy, other times not at all and then I have to poke more. Are you warming up Mimi's ear before you poke? A warmed sock full of rice or simply massaging the ear can help warm it up a bit. It seems to help me a lot but I don't always need to.
I also use a pen as I can't seem to get the hang of free handing and it ends up being too hard on Thomas. He can definitely tell the difference and ends up attacking me. He's not an easy tester in general though.
Do you use a higher gauge or lower to poke? Perhaps using a lower gauge like a 28 gauge may help if her ears aren't bleeding well. Not sure what setting you use on your pen but I usually don't have to go very high. If it's too high it usually goes through his ear and I don't usually get any blood either.
I'm still a newbie though so I'm not sure if this is of any help to you or you may know all of this already.
Hopefully it gets easier for you both!:bighug:

I was reading your about page earlier, you guys have sure gone through a lot. Just wanted to say what a great fur momma you are taking such good care of Mimi! Wishing you all the best!:bighug:

Zoot! used to try to bite me when I used a lancing device :banghead:. Probably cause I never got the depth or placement right. When I switched to free hand, the thing that helped me was to get the lancet at a 45 degree angle or less when I poke.

Either way it will get easier - it took me many months (and treats) ;)
