? question about food and BG #'s

I was wondering, my gato tested a 84 @ +8.5, I fed her a spoonful of food/FF classic because of her being good and sitting for test, I was wondering does the food help regulate that number? should I worry if she will drop more?

 

While 84 is above the nominal human meter hypo threshold number of 50 she has had one humungous drop in BG levels since AMPS. Even though you're over half way through the current cycle I suggest you keep a close eye on her BG levels and clinical signs (sometimes steep drops can trigger hypo symptoms at numbers above 50). I also suggest that you post in the Lantus and Levemir group's board asking for someone to have a look at Gato's spreadsheet for you and some input on how to proceed. It would help if you could post a few hours ahead of the time your next dose is due. Also put a question mark icon at the beginning of your post to let people know that you have questions and need assistance.

I just bumped your L&L thread and flagged that Gato's getting quite steep drops on her current dose. I've asked if someone can have a look at her numbers before the next dose is due but obviously it depends on how many members are logged in. Please can you pop over to the L&L board and keep an eye on your thread. Fingers and paws crossed you'll get some replies shortly. (And never be shy about asking for help on FH when you need it! )

So do I! and go to university! It has been beyond stressful. Had to miss uni today, just hope that we both get this straightened out. I knew I shouldn't have injected this morning despite a score in the mid 100s. She drops too sharply. We will get this sorted so they start to comfortably surf

 

I was told on here not to shoot in the 100's, but the vet told me to not test and just keep giving her 1 unit

I go to college but it is all online, but I am getting behind because I can't concentrate

 

My vet has been pretty poor at explaining tbh. They are not really very supportive of home testing, although they do not oppose it they also do not encourage it either. I now know not to shoot in the 100s!

 

Yeah my vet isn't so hot about testing at home either, I am switching vets she is in the same office but better with cats and cat knowledge. I learned also by not shooting in the 100's the hard way, all day saturday had to watch her

 

Yeah! It wasn't a great way to learn that lesson! She drops so steeply! Sorry to hear you had to find out the same way. I will be calling the specialist vets tomorrow to see if I can manage the majority of her care myself at home, send them data and generally use them as extra advice and almost like a case manager for her. They have had mega success getting cats into remission, even cats who are long term diabetics. I'm glad you've found a better vet.

 

what specialist do you have... I met a lady at my vet who raised 18 diabetic cats, she gives me a lot of advice, the vet I am switching to is who her animals go to

 

The Royal College of Veterinarians run a diabetic feline clinic...It is a million miles away from me so would be for phone consultations only, really.

@Lisa and Gato - Just checked your other thread. Glad to see carfurby's responded.

The higher number tonight may have been a response to the steep drop earlier in the cycle. Also, a diabetic's body gets used to higher numbers and when BG levels go to a lower number than it is used to the cat's body may 'think' it's too low (even when it's perfectly safe - and not necessarily that low). The cat's system may then respond by triggering the liver to release more stored sugar than is needed, hence the higher BG numbers seen when the cat bounces.

I live in England, I live about 2.5 hours drive from the RCV clinic so could never have them as my regular vets. Good to know they are there though.
