Starting Lantus

hi guys! Finally, after over a month on caninsulin I have got my vet on side with changing to Lantus!

I’ve picked up my vial today but haven’t given any.

I have been doing a curve on Jazz today of her on caninsulin and 1U only bought her down to 14.4 at +4 so I’m inclined to start lantus on 1U, what do you think? Her chart is in my signature.

Also, should I start the lantus tonight? Or wait until tomorrow? I will be (mostly) home during the days for the next four days to be monitoring her, but overnights are harder!

I answered you over on the main page.
Looking forward to seeing how she like the Lantus.
Over on this page we start a new post each day and put the date, name of kitty and usually AMPS in the subject line, and link the posts each day. If you have a question put the ? Option in the subject line or ask question in subject line.

Copied from your post on Health

I agree with @Bron and Sheba …..most of the time, the first several days on Lantus is uneventful, but some cats respond quickly.

If you want to start tonight, you can, but I'd try to get at least a +2 and be prepared to get more tests later on if necessary.

If you don't want to take the chance of being up most of the night, there's no reason you can't start tomorrow.

Most likely, it would be totally fine, but since ECID, we never say "never"

Thanks guys, I’ll figure it out! *duh* haha.

I’ve just replied to my other post in the main health forum. I have started her lantus tonight and will test through the night as needed. Hopefully won’t make much difference for her right away though and she will ease in to it.

You asked on the other thread what sort of readings you would expect at +2 etc.
usually we say if the BSL is higher than the Preshot at +2 then normally the cycle will not be active. If the number is the same or lower at +2 then you will probably have an active cycle. That is why it is good to get a + 2 at night.
In saying all that every cat is different so I would get a + 2 and a later test. All this is data which is going to teach you how Jazz responds to Lantus.

Thank you!! There’s a half hour until her +2 and then I’m off to bed, but have my alarm set to get up and test her again.
