Lots of prayers are needed for Talbot today.

Talbot who has had diabetes has a since he was 12 has a severe case of pancreatitis. Xena, his litter mate was diagnosed first and received fluids and med's. Sam, another litter mate was diagnosed a couple of days latter. He required iv fluids and is at the vet for a second day.

I brought Talbot in today because he looked a little dumpy last night and did not eat last night. He threw up blood (as the other cats had). Sam and Talbot also have bloody diarrhea. They said he was severely dehydrated and is on pain killers, anti nausea and iv fluids. They said it is very touch and go and would at the very least need to be at the emergency vet over the weekend. Husband worries that it is too much to put him through and the cost of course is a big worry. They all just turned 18, which I know is old but his kidneys and other values are all in good shape so this should not be happening!

I called a vet in the twin cities that makes house calls to pts but they are booked until tomorrow. Geeez.

It is breaking my heart. SO HOW DO THREE CATS GET SERVER PANCREATITIS? THE ONLY COMMON FACTOR IS THAT THEY ALL ATE WELLNESS CANNED FOOD. THE CHICKEN VARIETY AND THE TURKEY VARIETY. VET SAYS IT HAS TO BE ORAL FOR THIS TO HAPPEN TO ALL THREE. They've eaten this for years but something must be in this batch.

Sending prayers for all that you are going through. It sounds to me more like food poisoning than pancreatitis. I can`t think all 3 cats would get pancreatitis at the same time.

Terri

Sending healing vines for Talbot and Xena and Sam. Hugs for you. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

It really does seem like they must have gotten into something. Could they have gotten a mouse that had eaten poison? It's the season for those critters to try to get in and the symptoms are right.

I am sending many prayers and healing vines for Talbot. He may do well with the supportive care. I hope that he turns the corner and is feeling better soon. Come on, Talbot, you have toasters to check on!

What an ordeal for all of you! DId they do the tests to confirm pancreatitis? It really doesn't make sense that they would all be hit like this so suddenly. It must be something else. I had two cats that were not related but raised together and both died of pancreatic cancer a year apart. The vet said the odds against that were huge, so I guess this is possible, but it doesn't sound right to me.

Sending lots of healing vines and prayers.

I had the same thought as Tricia. Did the vet do a Snap fPL or send out blood for a Spec fPL? Short of an ultrasound, which is a lot more expensive, these blood tests are the best way to diagnose pancreatitis.

You might want to take a look at this Primer on Pancreatitis that Marje/Gracie put together.

It's good to hear from you I just wish it was under different circumstances. I hope your kitties are feeling better soon.

So sorry to hear that they are all sick....

I agree with what others are saying that it might be something else....perhaps bring in a sample of the food they are eating to have it tested?

What vet clinic do you go to? I am in Burnsville...

((((Melinda))))
We are sending tons of vines and prayers that your kitties will be much better tomorrow. It certainly sounds like some kind of poisoning. If you suspect the food, make sure that you make a note of the batch and the plant where it was manufactured. Perhaps call the company to see if there are other instances. Do you have any new or unusual plants around your house? Houseplants are notorious. The ASPCA has a poison hotline: (888) 426-4435. They might be able to help.

More prayers. I agree this might be something else. Cats can have an acute panc episode but so many of them is suspicious that it might be something else.

sending a ton of heaing vines your way for all three kitties. Their symptoms don't really sound like pancreatitis so I wonder if they all got into something.

Many prayers that they all recover quickly.

Hoping all of your kitties are feeling well soon!

(I have heard of a few people who's cats developed diarrhea on Wellness chicken lately. Whatever is decided is the cause of your kitties' distress, I would discard the remainder of the Wellness batch, maybe contact Wellness and ask them to replace it.)

Thank you for your input and thoughts. Xena seems to be doing better. Both Sam and Xena saw their vet today and had fluids. I can do this at home but Xena is a stinker about it so I was glad to let the vet help with that.

Sam is eating a bit now and then, wish he would eat more. He is on Metronidazole, Famotidine, Sucralfate and Buprenex. I'm not sure if it's the Metronidazole or the Famotidine that is causing him to be reluctant to eat. I know he's still not feeling top notch.

I'm offering Fancy Feast and Friskies to tempt them. I just can't use any Wellness since mine must be contaminated and I don't trust any other Wellness even if it is a different lot number. At least not yet. They say they have had no other reports but that is the only cause the doctors can think of. They are sending a mailer for me to send them cans from the cases I was using when this happened.

Poor Talbot is the worst off. He is at the emergency vet still. They have him in a warmer and he is on i.v. fluids. He is moving around the cage more, which is encouraging. Still no eating and he did have nausea when I visited him this afternoon. They were going to give him something more for that. I feel that he will probably turn down any food for now. They did mention that they would like to put in a nasal feeding tube if he does not eat soon. At least that's not as invasive as a feeding tube into his abdominal area, which would be going too far at this point given his age. I don't want to put him through too much but since he is making slow improvements we are going to wait through the weekend to make any decisions.

Any input on Sam's lack of eating... have others had trouble with side affects from Metronidazole or Famotidine?

Tons more of prayers for them all esp Talbot.

Gracie cannot take metronidazole...it makes her vomit. I would suspect between that and the famotidine, it's the metronidazole which is an a/b.

Sending you all tons of hugs and love.....

Is he at South Metro Animal Hospital? They are amazing there, very caring. Skooter went there after a surgery as his vet did not have 24/7 care.

Glad Sam & Xena are home and doing a little better. Continuing to think of Talbot- hope he's perked up by morning. cat_pet_icon

You must be so worried. :YMHUG:

Glad to hear that Xena is a little better, but here are tons and tons more prayers and healing vines for all of the kitties, especially Talbot. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Question for you, did all of the kitties vomit blood? Was it food colored or foamy-bloody? Was it soon after eating or after a long period after the meal?

The reason I ask, my kitty Tiger had an episode of what the Emergency Vet called acute pancreatitis November 2nd. She wasn't eating well the night before but the next morning, she vomited foamy, bloody vomit, and had a 2 episodes of diarrhea, but not bloody as far as I could tell. (Tiger eats alternately Wellness Core Chicken,Turkey and Chicken Liver, Wellness Chicken LC and Purina DM.) The night before, I had given her Purina DM because I knew she wasn't eating good and because she likes that the best and naturally she refused to eat. We took her right to the ER Sunday morning because our vet was closed. They put her on IV, she was given Cerenia,Bupe, Clavamox,Metronidiazole, Carafate and Famatodine. I brought her in at 7:30AM that Sunday. The vet called me that night at 7:00PM and said she had made a turnaround and she had eaten on her own, Purina EN(which is not good for diabetic cats!) We were able to bring her home the next afternoon.

Once released, I was supposed to continue Clavamox,Metronidiazole,Carafate and Famatodine. I was unable to give Clavamox, she absolutely would not swallow the pill, no matter what I tried. I did continue the Metronidiazole, Carafate for the full course. and 2 doses of Famatodine before I quit giving it.

I did not notice any ill effects from the Metronidiazole or Famatodine, in fact, I think it helped her diarrhea if anything. But I am wondering if your Sam might benefit from something like Cerenia, he might be nauseated? Also, the ER vet gave us Purina EN(yes, I know everybody hates prescription food but since Tiger willingly ate it, who am I to say) which is a bland food, I mixed it gradually with Wellness Core Chicken,Turkey and Chicken Liver over the course of 5 days. She has been fine ever since last Friday, no ill effects.

Now I have to wonder after re-reading your post, if Tiger really had pancreatitis or some kind of food poisoning! As I said, I am sending many many prayers for Talbot, Xena and Sam, I hope that will feel better soon. :YMHUG:

Talbot is at South Metro in Apple Valley. They do seem quite knowledgable and patient.

All three cats vomited foamy bloody vomit. Also bloody diarrhea. I think it has to be the Wellness. We just don't have anything else in the house that could have made them all so sick. No plants or chemicals. Sam and Xena both eat Whole Life dehydrated chicken treats but Talbot does not.

Continuing to send healing vines and prayers for Talbot, Sam and Xena. I hope that all three will be feeling much better tomorrow.

Hugs for you, Melinda! :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

I called to check on Skooter several times throughout the night when he had to stay there and they even let me visit at a really weird time because I was nervous and worried....

Sending more vines and prayers to you all....

Call Wellness asap if you think it was the food; they need to know. The cans have codes on them which identify the plant used for manufacturing.
Also, you can report a food problem to the FDA.

I had a problem with Wellness one fall with an apparant batch problem. Fall is when a lot of live stock goes to slaughter and batches may shift in composition. Track those batch numbers; one plant may be OK wile another can have a problem.
