Good morning everyone :)

There has been more developments since my last post on Fistuk's teeth inflammation and blood test results.

The 5 days AB are finished now and I'm really so happy it didn't give him a massive diarrhoea as it normally does. He did have some soft topping on his baked good which left him at times mucky but it was very mild.

It made him more alert, a bit more active and more engaged. So clearly he just suffered quietly from the inflammation for quite a while.

I found a cat only vet clinic and have been in contact with them to get Fistuk's Xray and possible a surgery to extract the canine teeth. I had to first do a detective work to find the vet who extracted his teeth in 2018. Luckily it was rather easy and sent out the file quickly.

BUT. To the cats' vet request we got the proBNP from his latest blood sample (I was happy the lab still had it). It's 130 which indicates some heart problems.

Together with the diabetes, kidney, pancreas and elevate liver values the vet said there's a small risk of heart arrest in the weeks after the surgery or internal organs complications.

after further inquiry I began to feel more confident taking that risk. To my questions, the vet told me that on similar cases they had one loss in the past year and over the past two years she's been operating on cats with difficult heart problems 4-6 timey every week. I saw on her website that she's specialising in cat's sedation.

I still haven't made a finally decision and also we need to find the budget. She estimated that together with Xray and the rets of the media and surgery it'll be in the 1.5-2K area. Auch!

I bumped into my neighbours yesterday. Normally they give me a polite Swiss hello and move on but yesterday, accompanied by their dog they stopped for a quick chat. They dog had CKD and they expressed great appreciation to their vet and said "he has os many cats clients, always so many cats there". So I thought I'd give it a go and ask for another quote. I will have to feel also confident that this vet knows what they're doing in terms of sedation. So my detective work to do.

For the moment I'm enjoying Fistuk's elevated energy and that his face looks more plump with less tension but also with mum shoving some extra food with syringe into him so he gain gain a bit of weight :p

His BG is rather regulated. There's a regular blue bump at +3 Am cycle but it's the least of my worries at the moment. I'm not changing the dose until we've figured out the teeth situation.

Hope everyone's getting some good end of year rest.
Much love
Fistuk and Shelly

Hello Shelly,
Thanks for the Fistuk update.
Happy to hear his energy levels are up and he's doing well.
I'm sure you're stressed about the operation and the costs but I know you will make the best decision for Fistuk.
Nice to hear from you and just in case we don't see you on the board, boys and I wish you, your hubby, Fistuk and Prince a very happy New Year full of love, peace and health :cat::cat:

He looks really good in the picture. Would it be possible to get an echo to assess his heart? It might make your decision easier. :bighug:
Hi Elise:)
I assume the vet who'll be operating will do an eco. She's an expert on conducting operations on cats with heart problems.
When I asked about previous successes or failures of cases like mine she said that They've had only one cat who had heart arrest a couple of weeks after the surgery and that she operates on 4-6 cats with high risk weekly for two years now.

But I'd like to speak to my vet tomorrow and ask what the alternative is. I imagine there aren't any much because giving AB on a regular basis is not an alternative really.

Wishing you a happy new year :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I hope I can make a good decision. There's always a risk in any operation and it's never an easy decision. I'm taking my time to just be with it until I have clarity.

Wishing you and the boy a happy new year filled with with furry love, licks and hugs :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Shelly, I’m so glad you’re doing your diligent research as always to make the best decision for sweet Fistuk.
It’s always so scary when we have to make the decision to have them put under anesthesia for a procedure.

It’s so wonderful you have him so well regulated, and that can only help his situation that his diabetes is well under control.
Wishing you all the best in weighing all the decisions. I know you will make all of the best choices for him.
Wishing you and your family, a wonderful, happy and healthy new year.

Hi Shelly. it's wonderful to hear that he's more alert, active and engaged. What a great pic of Fistuk. I know you will make the right decision when it comes to his teeth. Sounds like you have found a great vet who specializes in cats with heart conditions and sedation. Give that handsome boy a big kiss for me :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::cat:

I'm so sorry Fistuk has been having teeth issues, but happy the AB's have brought him some relief. Good luck with finding the right decision, I know you will- you are connected to Fistuk and always do the right thing by him. I am sending and yours lots of love, and wishes for a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous new year. :bighug::bighug:

Hi Shelly,

so glad Fistuk is doing better and the nice pic is a good proof! Sounds like you look at a possible surgery from every angle and you have an experienced vet. And I can relate to the thought, that giving antibiotics long time and not dealing with the root cause is not really a solution. Fistuk is really lucky to have you, weighing all these aspects so carefully. All paws and fingers are crossed for Fistuk! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm just catching up ... I love this picture! Fistuk is adorable.

I feel your anxiety at the prospect of a dental procedure and anesthesia. It's always scary, but I know you will make a well-informed decision and that Fistuk will be in caring and capable hands.

Sending you a big hug and Fistuk a kiss on his pretty white forehead. :bighug::cat::bighug:

Hi Christine :)
I'm also happy to see that the Ab gave him some respite from pain mainly bc it's a confirmation that his inflammation needs to be dealt with asap and it helped me in making a decision.
I appreciate your confidence in my decision xx
I wish you a wonderful year and pray that jack will let go of his love for biscuits in 2025;)
I hope you get some time to rest now and enjoy some quite time with you beloved pack.
Much love to you all :bighug::bighug::bighug:
