So we got Kai's blood test results back today and his kidney values haven't really improved. His INDEXX SDMA and BUN have improved a little but his Creatinine was higher. His potassium also went down a little but is still considered elevated. I asked her about switching him to a regular saline Sub Q Fluid in regards to the elevated potassium levels and she agreed.

I guess the CKD diagnosis is official now and that really breaks my heart. My hopes were so high because he has been acting and doing so well. I really just don't understand. He is showing no other signs or symptoms of CKD but his blood test says otherwise.

I'm just going to keep doing what I can do until the day comes where he does start to show symptoms. We will cross that bridge when we get there.

For now I would like to pick your brains.

I'm going to start Kai on Denamarin becuase his liver enzymes are also still slightly elevated. And I'm also going to switch him to a regular 0.9% saline sub q fluid. Although, I am a bit concerned about the regular saline solution causing his sodium levels to rise. His sodium levels are just under the threshold of elevated so i don't want to make things worse there. I'm going to email his vet tonight and point that out. She either didn't see it or wasn't concerned about it. If anyone has any experience with either of those two thing, please feel free to chime in with any suggestions or advice.

I hope everyone else had a perfectly normal and calm day ❤️

I'm sorry for the disappointing news. And I love your approach to keep doing what you're doing to support him and keep him healthy and happy and hopefully stall any progression. :bighug::bighug:

Hi @Maddie & Kai, I can't see his latest labs in the SS?

Cats can live many years with CKD. So don't worry about it. It's harder when you have diabetes and CKD together - especially in terms of finding foods that will be good for both.

:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks, Bhooma ❤️
I have updated his labs in column C on his Lab tab. I also added a link at the top that will take you to a google folder with all of his lab reports, in case anyone is interested. I set that up for the CKD forum. :bighug:

Ah OK. The date on that column is 2/16/2025. Guess it should be 4/16/2025? :-)

I set that up for the CKD forum.
They are the best people to give you advice on CKD.

You could also check this out with the CKD forum, but I've known people who alternate between the two types of fluids. Give LRS on 2 days and NS on 1 day. The higher sodium in NS is indeed a problem, so you may not want to give only NS.

I'm sorry, Maddie. FWIW, my previous cat had CKD, and, honestly, until the very end of his life (19 years), he really didn't show any symptoms. We only knew he had it from the lab work. He lived quite a while with the diagnosis and he also had thyroid disease.

I hope you'll be able to find all the resources you need to help you to continue supporting and treating him with this new disease in the mix. I know this is going to complicate things for Kai. You're such a good fur-mommy, though, and you're going to do your best to keep him as healthy as possible--he's very, very fortunate to have you.

Sorry about that, I apparently I wasn't thinking straight last night. Thank for cathcing that.
And I also reached out to the CKD forum.

Thank you Mary! I really appreciate your kind words.
And WOW 19 years. Thats amazing!

Much love to you, Maddie (and to Kai!). :bighug::bighug:. I think it is really good that he is acting and feeling so well! People remind me here a lot that Bell is more than her numbers, and I'm sure that applies to conditions other than FD. Give him a hug for me :bighug:
