Hello! I meant to post last night but unfortunately all I could get to was Moses' prick and shoot. So I've updated my spreadsheet with last night's PMPS of 240 and this morning's AMPS of 376. His numbers seem so random!

Ronnie and Moonie - Moses must have heard your comment about being in the 200s last night. :-D

And it's nice being in the newbie group with Paige & Webber and Nicole & Furbaby. Thanks for the support and the welcomes everybody!

Question:
So, Moses has been eating Innova EVO (hard & soft) for the past 3/4 years and I'm finally weaning him off of the dry. Which is hard b/c he does not want to be denied the crunch! Anyways, he's a grazer. So right now I'm feeding him 4 oz of soft food twice a day with his insulin shot. And I leave his food out for him to graze on through out the day, until the next meal. I'm wondering, is this why my numbers are so up and down?

And if it is, what could I do differently? I don't see him finishing the nom noms within an hour for me to put away. And I don't want him starving throughout the day, b/c he's a very vocal breed and he'll let us know. Any suggestions?

Just wanted to welcome you and tell you that I'm glad you're here with Moses. How did Moses get his name?

With dry food mixed with wet, my best guess is - yes - dry food will stay in the system longer and takes longer to get out, so u may be seeing that up and down cuz of both wet and dry being fed, good to hear you are trying to ween him off.

Have you read Dr Lisa's website on Feline Nutrition? She has really good info on how to transition your cat to wet food safely and with many tricks along the way, Here is the link:

Good job on transitioning over to canned food. That will make a big difference.

Right now, I don't think you can draw any conclusions about Moses' numbers. Especially with Lantus, pre-shot numbers don't tell you the full picture. It's why we place a great deal of emphasis on getting spot checks at various times throughout the cycle. Most of us feed snacks/mini-meals over the course of the day. Gabby is not a grazer. She gets 2 oz of food at meals and about 1/8 of a can of FF every couple of hours until around the middle of the cycle. Feeding in smaller amounts puts less pressure on the pancreas and allows it to heal. Further, until Moses is better regulated, he's going to be hungry a lot of the time. It's fine to give him food. Once his numbers are better, his appetite will decrease.
 
Sweet! Thanks for the tip Ronnie & Luna. I guess my main concern is that he has all access to his food throughout the day. And all that constant snacking doesn't allow a controlled blood glucose.

How'd Moses get his name? I'm glad you asked! :-D My family got Moses around the time that the Prince of Egypt movie came out. My mom's friend's son is a vet and my mom mentioned at the dinner table twice that this kitten was looking for a home. I was shocked that my dad opted for him, and the only thing I knew was his face was like a siamese. lol

Low and behold he was this little tiny black kitten with huge, I mean HUGE, ears. (for later pricking of course). Who would not stop purring whenever anybody walked in the room to be with him. In fact, this vet normally has to bring animals to the SPCA when people bring in strays, but this kitten was such a sweetheart with an amazing personality that he couldn't.

So, all in all, we found out that Moses was thrown out of a car. So... my mom made the similarity between the biblical Moses being thrown into a river and this kitty being "thrown" out. Other then that, his name fits him perfectly. Thanks for asking, lol, I don't tend to leave short answers, ha!
 
I free feed my cats and that always worked fine. Usually they eat the majority of their food at meal time, but then snack on the rest as the day goes on. There may be a point down the road where we find that changing Moses' meal timings might help him out, but for right now I wouldn't worry about that. It's good for most diabetics to have food available all the time.

Looks like things are going well here so far!
 
I free food too. Baby was a dry food addict - but got her switched over - now it is just leaving the food out for them to eat when they want. I think this works nicely, except they are addicted to "the fresh crack of the can" anything left out..they won't touch after an hour or so. Neither one of them eat a lot at a time - so this creates an issue. Both of them together cant even finish a 3 ounce can at once....in fact..they might just finish half if that...so I find myself opening a lot & I want to get out of this habit. Of course, Baby will eat Raw too.

Hey there, I'm closing the post with Moses PMPS of 301. What a great day. We almost hit under 300 for his PMPS, but I had to prick him twice b/c his little monitor didn't get enough blood time #1. bummer!

B/t/w his litterbox is amazing :RAHCAT Eating 100% wet food is truly a miracle maker.

I seem to be feeling better too! The flu is on it's way out. A great Saturday, indeed. Talk to ya'll tomorrow!
 
Glad that you are feeling better Erica! And, welcome to LL...

Pepper loved his Evo crunchies too **sigh**.. However, like Nicole's kitties, Pepper is now accustomed to the crack of the can and we also have a timed feeder for him (which he has it timed to a tee on his kitty watch..lol).

Pepper adjusted with time.. But, he definitely let me know just how unhappy he was without his crunchies..
Unfortunately, Pepper is not allowed to graze as he only knows how to gobble :mrgreen:

Because Moses is not regulated as of yet he should be fed frequently (except for the last 3-4 hours of the cycle).. so leaving some canned food down for him to eat and then picking it up 3-4 hours before the end of his cycle he should do very well..
unless he's a gobbler like Pepper..

So glad your here and I can't wait to see all of Moses future progress!
