So Tigger is at 227 this morning, this is the lowest he has been in a couple of days. I've been leaving wet food out for all the cats the graze on, and his appetite has been good. This morning, he's not really interested in eating, seems fine otherwise. I even opened up a can of chicken breast and he just sniffed it. Should I still shoot even though he hasn't eaten?

Re: 2/08/10 Tigger Amps 227 Not eating

Hi Mandy,
I don't wait for Shadoe to eat before giving her shots.
I usually test, then give her shot, and the food is put down for her.
She will eat when she feels like it. Most times, she is fairly hungry because you are not to feed for 2 hours prior to shots, but there are the odd days that she does not eat immediately.
If Tigger seems fine and he does not seem to be sick, then maybe he's just not that hungry right now. I would not delay his shot though; he still needs his shot.

Re: 2/08/10 Tigger Amps 227 Not eating

I don't want to give you any advice, I just want to say that some mornings mocha walks away from her breakfast as well. I always try to tell myself (especially on those lower numbers days, even though they are rare) that a lower number probably means she just isn't that hungry and that is a good thing. If she doesn't eat all day, then it's time for me to worry.

Unlike with some insulin, you do have a window before Lantus begins to work. I would keep an eye out so you know that Tigger eventually eats otherwise, his numbers may drop over the next couple of hours.

nice number.

Our rule of thumb here is the lower you shoot, the earlier your first test needs to be. Can you get a test at +2? Or if you have to go out, get a +1 before you leave, especially if he hasn't eaten yet. Thanks!

Re: 2/08/10 Tigger Amps 227 Not eating

Ok, just tested and at +2 he's at 316. I still haven't seen him eat, and maybe I'm just being a worried mommy, but he seems like he feels bad.

Re: 2/08/10 Tigger Amps 227 Not eating

Alrighty, I went to the store, and now he is eating some beef baby food, I take it as a good sign that he is eating. I also found a puddle of urine in the litter box on the side he always uses, and tested for ketones. It came back with a moderate positive. I'm not sure how long that puddle has been there, and I'm going to get a fresh test just as soon as I catch him going.

I haven't dealt much with ketones, but I know they need attention, so...bump! And sending healing vines.

the ketone test could have been contaminated so i would try and get a new test as soon as he goes. just in case he is developing a problem, keep trying to get him to eat and drink to help flush out any developing ketones

Ok I hope that was a bad test.. if the next test comes back moderate, off to the vet, Ok? Agree with Cindy, keep him as hydrated as you can, including water down that baby food.

Sorry it took so long for an update. He is at the vet now. They have him on fluids, and are syringe feeding him. This is the second time in a few weeks he has been left at the vet, and I'm really worried that we're not going to get him going in the right direction. I know it takes time, I'm just getting really frustrated.

I hope Tigger gets better soon. Did they say what was wrong? Was it ketones?

This does happen sometimes here that a cat has ketones..By finding the right dose & monitoring, you will see better results.
Dont get down , you are doing a great job! You are hometesting & doing ketone testing..It is early on to feel badly. You are doing so much for Tigger..And you have us to help you now..
