Last night, Morris ate about 1/4 of the LC/MC Fancy Feast mix I left out for him. Since he is still not eating much, I have opted not to use the timed feeder again today. In 1 of his regular bowls, I put 1 entire can of LC Friskies mixed with water & in his other bowl I left the remaining LC/MC Fancy Feast mix & added water to it. Cleaning out the LB today....he has peed several times since last night & there was 1 soft medium sized poo as well (it was formed....not diarrhea).

Will be stopping by my vets office on the way to work this morning. I will be dropping off an updated copy of his ss & a print out from yesterdays condo so my vet knows exactly what is going on. Will keep you all posted!!

And thanks once again for all your help & support last night.......it is really, truly appreaciated!!!!

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much!

Sorry he's still not eating well, Gwen. Sending you and Morris some positive thoughts today! Hope everything checks out ok and you can figure out why he's not eating.

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much!

Thanks for the update Gwen. I hope you are able to talk to the vet and maybe get him in today. Pets to Morris.

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much!

Talked to vets office.....their office was not on-call last night, but they will investigate to find out why no one called me back. Turns out my regular vet (who I tried to call at home last night) is in Hawaii right now!!! I guess I will forgive her for not calling me back!!! I have an appointment at 3pm today with another vet in the office. Now I just need to figure out how to get off work early!!!!

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much - vet questions

Since I will be seeing another vet at the clinic rather than my usual vet, I am not sure how receptive this vet will be to all my print outs from here!!! What questions should I be asking today?? At a bare minimum, what tests/investigations should I be requesting??

If this is pancreatitis, what is the treatment for that???

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much - vet questions

Hi Gwen,
I did a super quick reading of your condo yesterday... and I'm very concerned about lack of appy.

AFAIK, the most common reasons cat's will stop eating... or be super finicky.
1) tooth/dental problems and pain with eating?
2) pancreatitis
3) liver issues/hepatic lipidosis

I am sure there are far more that I just don't know about.

For #2, there are tests (U/S and fPLi) to see if pancreatitis is the culprit, BUT they are not definitive. Both tests can give a false negative result (the result says cat does not have, but they do). However, positive or not, they don't have a cure, just stuff to treat the symptoms (lack of appy, pain, vomiting, etc) with SQ fluids, mirtazapine (for appy), cerenia (i think for nausea), pepcid/famotodine (for tummy upset), and buprenex for the pain.

Please read Jojo's post about p-itis... but I do think you would've noticed and commented on other symptoms (meatloafing, lip smacking, vomiting, etc).

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much - vet questions

Yup as Jojo said yesterday in your condo, pancreatitis doesn't have to have all those symptoms. It varies in severity from one flare to the next, but you've got definite pain response (grumpy, swiping at trespassers in his space) and inappetance, which are two of the biggest. Spot had pancreatitis and only on the most severe flares would I see many of those symptoms. In fact the only way I usually knew was he would go off his food, and then I would ultimately find him looking uncomfortable and cranky somewhere he wasn't normally.

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much - vet questions

I have no experience with pancreatitis...just wanted to wish you luck at the vet tonight.

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much - vet questions

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much - vet questions

just checking in to see if there is a Morris update. I'm glad you're going to the vet.

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 - still not eating much - vet questions

Home from the vet! The vet we saw today was very pleased with all the detailed information I was able to provide her & did not cringe at all when I talked about the information & help I receive from my 'online friends'!!! Morris has gained weight since he was last there in Dec....he was 5.27kg & today I can't remember if she said today he was 5.36kg or 5.69kg. She does not think he appears to be dehydrated at all, so we did not need to get any SQ fluids. She did look at his teeth....she said they could use some attention, but she has definately seen worse. Before we schedule a dental, however, she wanted to run some tests to rule out other issues. It cost a small fortune, but I gave the OK for a full blood panel (cbc & chemistry), urinalysis, urine culture & the fpl test (she brought that up before I had a chance to!). The preliminarly results will be back tomorrow afternoon, but the urine culture & probably the fpl will take a few more days. In the mean time, diabetes is taking a back seat. The main goal right now is getting him to eat anything! If all he will eat right now is MC, that is OK. Tonight, dh has also suggested that I should try feeding him a can of salmon (he caught the salmon & had it canned....no additives in it). I also mentioned that I kind of hope Morris is feeling better by the weekend as he needs to go to the kennel.....the tech that we see most assured me that the kennel he is going to (she is the 1 who recommended it to us in the first place) is quite competent & will be able to deal with his health issues if he is still not 100% by Saturday afternoon. Morris still did not eat much today, but at least he did drink the water that I had added to the food. When we got home from the vet, I opened up a new can of MC fancy feast, mixed it with water & served it to Morris.....he ate about 3/4 of it before going to lay down.

Any other thoughts/suggestions/advice/questions???

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 VET APPT UPDATE

good! very glad you were able to get him to vet today. and awesome that vet suggested the fPLI test before you even could, seriously that is a very good sign that this vet is very on the ball. yep tomorrow you'll get the CBC/chem and u/a back, bit longer for fPLI unless it was the specfPLI and the C&S just takes time, have to wait for bacteria if there is any to grow, can't do anything about how long that takes, lol.
sure feed MC if he will eat it, is imperative that a cat eats, especailly a diabetic cat. they slip so easily into HL (hepatic lipadosis) if they don't and a diabetic cat can start throwing ketones if not enough calories getting in. do make sure you are getting urine ketone tests whenever possible during this episode.
did he eat anything that you left out during day at all?

oh and before i forget, feb is pet dental month and most places run specials on price. since you are getting blood work done here, that can count as the pre-dental blood work if it comes back okay and once he is all better from whatever is going on here he should get that dental since between having the blood work already done and the price special it is best financially.

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 VET APPT UPDATE

Thanks for the update Gwen! Sounds like this new vet is a keeper.
Getting them to eat is a real bear, I know.... if they will eat it, let them....that's my new motto! haha_smiley
Sending out some good eating vines for Morris ~~~~~~ and a hug for you. (((((Gwen)))))

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 VET APPT UPDATE

Hi Gwen and Morris!!! Wow, you and the vet have the ball rollin', don't ya? I think the whatever he will eat plan is the best plan out there! Keep us updated when the blood work start rolling in and give Morris some scratches for us.

Re: 2/10 Morris AMPS 457 VET APPT UPDATE

Remember to pick up some baby food when you have a chance. You want the types that are just meat and broth -- no veggies or onions. (Gerber Stage 2 types) Most cats love the stuff.

If it's his teeth, you may want to try to puree regular cat food. Put it in the blender with some water so it's smoother than even the pate-type of food. Even your home canned salmon may be a challenge if Morris has dental issues going on.

Not really. He did at least drink up most of the water that I had mixed in with the food, so hopefully some of the good things from the food made it into the water & then into Morris! When we came home from the vet around 4pm, I opened up a fresh can of MC & he ate about 3/4 of that (3oz can)

Thanks for the info! I did notice signs up around the clinic about pets & dental issues! I will definately ask them about this if that is what we decide is needed for Morris!

We put 2 bowls out for him tonight for dinner......1 with just tuna water & 1 with some salmon mixed up with water.....it was interesting watching him from a distance going between the 2 bowls! It was like he was interested in both, but the plain tuna water was easier. Perhaps it is his teeth! He definately wants to eat & usually eats a few bites whenever I put fresh food down for him, but then he looses interest or something.

I am heading to the store now to re-stock on MC food & get some baby food as well! I think I am going to give him a break from the constant BG testing for a couple of days......partly because I know his numbers will be out of whack due to the MC food & partly because they had a heck of a time at the clinic today finding a vein to draw blood from! Dh says it is because I have been testing him too much! Perhaps I will just leave it with the pre-shot tests for the next couple of days.....or until I get him eating more.....whichever comes first!
