Yesterday's Old Timer Condo: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5394

I dose hopped back up to the .75U today.

Jojo and Cheryl were kind enough to stop by my condo late last night and share their thoughts on the renal diet. Bear's appy is back down today, and Teddy isn't feeling well, and I have to suspect the high fat content in the Evo as causing some pancreases to flare. I think I am pretty close to throwing in the towel on the diet, and going back to our old routine. You can't keep IBD, pancreatitis, CRF, finicky kitties, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency all happy at the same time.

hey there, just a quick note about food today cause i'm not doing good today. . .
forget the 'renal diet' stuff. feed him what works best for him and what he likes. i know you are trapped between denial and reality, but in his best interest gonna talk reality . . the diet stuff is about trying to prevent further damage to kidneys down on the line. need to think about how much longer his line is and if the renal diet stuff is causing worse diarrhea or he doesn't like it, then hell with it. people have bailed on renal diet for far far far less reasons than diarrhea. hey don't tell anyone but i don't do renal diet for my monster kitty. imho, the stress of trying to feed him separately from his littermates that he has eaten with every meal from the big plate of raw his whole life would drive him, me, and them (cause what the other cat has is always better than what you have and they would try to eat his food, etc) crazy and interfere with monster's QOL. i'm not willing to compromise his QOL for a few extra months of life. kwim?
let's take away the stress of diet out of this equation. sure sprinkle the phos binders on food but if he doesn't like them then forget that. but the food he likes best and works best for his other issues esp. with a bit of phos binders is beyond fine in my book.

I hope it isn't something that becomes a symptomatic issue with Bear. My vet always likes to say: treat the cat not the labs. I'm with jojo. If his intestines don't like a certain food, go back to what works and makes him happy.

Re: 2/7 Bear Man amps 310, +7 250

Well thank goodness! Im so glad that is settled!
Now Bear Man can get back to chowin' down and lowering those numbers again! *whew*

And as I told you...three years and I have not fed a renal diet to Latte (except for a short while when she ate the k/d kibble...cause she liked it). Her crf has been one of the most stable dis- ease processes she has, too!

Wed...Im going to inquire about getting something out on Wed - k?

Re: 2/7 Bear Man amps 310, +7 250

Good morning Linda. Glad that Jojo and Cheryl could stop by and give you some input. I agree with them, QOL is better to strive for at this time. Bear wants his old food back, not that nasty stuff that messes with his tummy and bummy! So, I hope Bear enjoys his old food back, Hope Teddy starts to feel better, and Hope you are doing a-ok.

Re: 2/7 Bear Man amps 310, +7 250

Me too. Just stopping by to see how Bear Man is doing.
I am betting that he must be sooo happy to be getting decent food again.
You can't ever lose touch with QOL.

I hope all is well in the Bear Man and Teddy household

Re: 2/7 Bear Man amps 310, +7 250

There's a lot to be said for a happy, well fed kitty. If Bear didn't like the renal diet and it wasn't making Teddy any too happy either, you'd end up trying to get them to eat and no one would have a decent QOL.

Oh my, no I'm sure you can't. :?

No food is any good if they won't eat it, so my vote is to go back to whatever worked before.

Re: 2/7 Bear Man amps 310, +7 250

So glad Cheryl stopped by too (I saw Jojo's post).

Glad you are going back to what Bear Man likes

Re: 2/7 Bear Man pmps 137, +2 112

pmps 137 .75U phos binder given
+2 112 pred/other oral meds given

This is a more Bear-like number.

A kibble free day today. I made my daily pilgrimage to the pet food store and came home with some fishy Friskies with phosphorus in the 260's. The boys give it two thumbs up, and it doesn't need to be sprinkled with kibble to get them to eat it.

aahhh and yea for fishy friskies that got two thumbs up! The boys are happy and the numbers are showing it!

just wanted to say hi and see how bear man's doing.

yum! so glad to hear the boys ate happily and bear man's numbers are regulating.

I agree with everyone Linda.
Just wanted to stop by and see how your 2 little men are doing.
Keeping them happy is what it is all about.
Nice numbers for the Bear Man!

Well, fwiw I think throwing in the towel looks like a good plan.
Feed them what makes them happy and enjoy your time together - happy is good medicine:)

Hugs and scritches!
